@Chops is it possible you extracted only the setup .exe file and ran the install?  There are several files inside the .zip file you downloaded.  They all should be extracted to an clean otherwise empty folder before running the setup.

If that is not your problem then do what Steve suggested and open a help desk ticket.

Guys, the issue I posted above was User error.

The Installer did not find my CMBS directory because I have it located in a non-standard location.  I realized this, and manually directed the Installer to my CMBS folder structure.  However, I made a mistake in the folder path.  Therefore the Installer added another folder into my CMBS folder, which caused my game to crash.

I deleted the erroneous folder, and re-installed the patch into the correct location.  Everything works fine now.

    Thank you.

  2. I downloaded the Patch file from this URL: https://battlefront.sharefile.com/share?#/view/sccb722bc4a44d748

The zip file size is listed as 62 MB, after extracting the file, the CMBS_v1.04_Setup.exe is listed as 545 KB.  Is this correct?

I installed this file and after trying to start Black Sea the game crashed.

Is there a different download location available?

It would have been very helpful, if a link to the Patch was provided in the first post of this Thread!

  3. One very important consideration if you decide to upgrade to Windows 10:

Currently Microsoft Updates are automatic, and there is not a way for the User to disable installation of updates.  This was done by some genius at Microsoft in the name of security.

However, this may adversely affect Combat Mission users by automatically installing graphics driver updates.  As we all have seen, certain graphics drivers cause problems with Combat Mission games.  Therefore, if you are using an older graphics driver and things are working fine with CM, you may be in for a surprise when your driver is automatically updated.

  5. I agree that recent real-life events have diverged from the storyline, however, recent events are proceeding at an accelerated pace.  It seems to me that the storyline and the real world are on a converging path, if not already there.

The recent events have caused us to jump ahead in the storyline close to this point:

"In response to the observed Russian mobilizations, Ukraine begins to mobilize low-readiness units and call up reservists. An expeditionary NATO force comprised of American and European military units is moved to eastern Poland, adjacent to the Ukrainian border. An American mechanized unit on rotational training in Germany joins them. The United States begins to prepare logistically by moving more prepositioned supplies and equipment to Germany, while transportation plans for stateside units to be moved overseas are put in motion."

    Pg. 5 CM:BS Manual.

Isn't Ukraine currently calling up new units?  The U.S. has plans to have "Trainers" in Ukraine near Poland this Spring, and the U.S. 2nd Cavalry was in Latvia last month for a Military Exercise. They brought a number of Stryker vehicles and Gen. Hodges said that over 200 tanks and IFV's will stay deployed somewhere in Eastern Europe.  The U.S. is openly discussing supplying lethal aid to Ukraine now as well.  Also, there are reports that Russia is increasing troops and supplies.

There are factions in and around the U.S. Government that love war, and profit tremendously from our military involvement around the Globe.  As we are seeing just this week; they are ramping up the involvement in Ukraine.  So, it looks to me like we are headed for the very real and dangerous potential for a hot war as depicted in CM:BS.

  6. As others have stated on the Forum, BFC has really produced a fascinating and very well done simulation of a modern Eastern European conflict.  However, I am feeling a strong sense of unease while playing CM:BS due to the very disturbing fact that the CM:BS storyline is quickly merging with reality.

From the Game Manual on Pg. 4

"War in real life is a terrible, horrible thing that should only be embarked upon as an absolute last resort. Combat Mission: Black Sea is thankfully still a fictional story, and likely to remain so unless our global leaders and populace collectively lose their minds. The stories that will be created within this game can serve as a grim reminder of the human cost incurred when diplomacy and decency fail."

Maybe BFC will consider sending a few free copies of CM:BS to the "leaders" involved in the current situation.

Here is an interesting discussion of recent events:  http://www.democracynow.org/2015/2/3/is_ukraine_a_proxy_western_Russia

  7. A solution may be to give the Scenario Designer the ability to have the AI use delayed artillery strikes.  Of course this would have to be programmed by the developers and I have no idea how difficult this would be, however, it would avoid the problem of the QB Player always knowing when initial artillery strikes will occur.

If I remember correctly the Human Player can place delays on artillery missions.

Makes sense, but speaking of irregulars (and I apologize for possibly asking something probably answered), will there be an expansion pack adding Donetsk separatists to the Russians, or even Ukrainian militia (the few that there are) to the game?

We are going to include irregular forces, for both sides, in a future Module. It was simply too much to do all at once.

  9. This is a really fascinating Thread and thanks for all of the great insight into this situation.

Can someone please describe the history of the battle and current situation around the Donetsk airport?  I am curious about the forces involved, the strategy, tactics, terrain, and why this battle has apparently been going on for months.

Also, what is the purpose of fighting for the airport?  Isn't it pretty much destroyed at this point?

Armata will be shown off in parade of may 9 this year,  It will be in service by 2017 but it will be in large numbers in the year of 2020. What would be cool is if they could have put in Kornet-EM, it's the Kornet ATGM with a 8km range and has ability to fire two rockets in salvo at a tank which would bypass APS or totally overwhelm a tank.  As you know Kornets are very powerful, And that would also help Russian side if you ask me. It would be good if they could also put in the T-72B3M(or B4) Which is the T-72B3 with a panoramic sight and also I think it adds a few more things but I do not know.

Thanks, And yes I know the U.S. is known for their organization in their wars,  But Russia also has its own sure not as good as the U.S.'s but its not going to be a major difference except for a few advantages the U.S. will get from that. The T-90AMs and the T-90As, T-72B3s also have data link capability.  In terms of spotting I think they should be equal, M1A2 has a commander panoramic site which the T-72B4 and the T-90AM have.

Vladimir, thanks for posting and sharing your insight on tactics and equipment as a former Russian soldier.  How would you handle the situation that Bil and his Russian force is currently encountering?

All - yes, there is currently no 'optics/remotes up' position in CM.  Best you can do is 'hull down' which is extremely hard to get and very perspective relative. 'Partial hull down' mitigates a little bit, but not enough. I've brought the magnitude of this problem up to the powers that be, but until we can get to a true new engine, it is unlikely to change.  I will reference your comments for further support in my reports though.  Thanks again for the encouragement on the writing.  When this thing is all done, I'll package it up and post as a stand-alone.  You can all snag it and say you were reading my stuff before I hit the NY Times best seller list!  ;-)

Battlefront will you please comment on this issue?  Is it feasible for the developers to implement LOS from extended sensors into CMx2 in the near future?  I really hope that this capability will be included in CM:BS.

Steve I see you posting on a regular basis in the "Ukraine Military vs Russia" Thread, which is somewhat interesting.  However, at least this customer would prefer that you would discuss CM:BS with the customer base on a more frequent basis.  It would be great to hear your thoughts on the new game, and answer questions such as the ones presented in this Thread.

Tell Ken Why =  Well Ken, as you can see, the bloke that just posted above me did not follow your instructions and therefore will be eliminated from the contestant pool.  You did not instruct the masses to post the time in bold, now did you?

So obviously, I deserve to win the game more than that poor scoundrel.  Additionally, I have already pre-ordered and purchased CM:BS, so I could really care less if I win this silly contest or not.  With that being said, I would really enjoy smacking you around on the virtual battlefield in a public AAR.  And finally, I want to gift my winnings to Mr. John Kettler so that he can face-off with Mr. JonS in another public AAR for us all to enjoy.

  13. Actually if there is a U.S./NATO vs. China conflict it will probably be in Africa. The Chinese are making big investments in infrastructure there, and pushing their influence on various countries. The U.S. has all kinds of special operations forces operating all over Africa now.

Africa has a lot of natural resources that I am sure the U.S. and China would love to fight over, and it would make for some interesting terrain and environments in the CM World.

If I remember correctly, MikeyD made a very cool African Mod for CM:SF.
