1. Hey Strider, Take some comfort in knowing that you are not alone in suffering a surrender. I have experienced such defeat in these unbalanced games as well. It seems that one is left with a rather harsh choice when a dominant opponent is pushing you off the map: 1) Keep your forces on map and hope the game ends before your moral drops below 15. 2) Extract what forces you can which will most likely drop the moral to below 15 anyway but limit the captures to those that are left. I'll take some icecream with my large slice of humble pie....
2. It occurs to me that this may not be a bug in the game. The theory being that the equipment and effort needed to move such a large gun would be heard by the opposing force during the interval between battles. So even if you reposition 88 during the setup phase (after the unit has been fully identified by your opponent) the unit's new position would be known. It seems a bit far fetched but plausible...
3. I think the fog of war no longer applies to that unit after it is fully identified in a battle within an operation. I played an operation in which my opponent had a flak 88. Once I had firm id on that unit I was able to see its position (even when repositioned) at the start of each battle that followed, until I dispatched with it permanently.
4. Do you know if the weather changes can be randomized? That chould add an intersting twist to QB's.
5. What if instead of a day/night change, there was weather change? Perhaps this has been discussed before, but not to my knowledge. Imagine, a morning battle in which the fog burns off to clear skies after 5 turns! That would really change the dynamics of armour positioning! Or how about a clear and damp day turning to rain and mud. That certainly could happen within an hour (especially in Europe). I don't think the programming would be too difficult either. All you would need is at least one interim condition, like "light fog," or "light rain." Tthese transitional conditions would give the players some reaction time to change their strategies!!
6. Are you going to animate those sunsets yourself? Perhaps add some gulls in the background and the sound of surf crashing on a beach?
7. So, every time I see the picture of the German artillery spotter down in the unit status window I think: "Hey, there's Christopher Walken!" The next thing I think is: "What the hell is Christopher Walken doing in a World War Two simulation game?!?!" I know, I know, you can only see the man's lower face beneath the raised binoculars, but I swear that's him!
8.
quote:
Originally posted by White4: I must say, the 8 airborne crack King Tigers that are my reinforcements in Meeting of Devils are helping me greatly. BUMP

Hot damn! I've been waiting for flying tanks all my CM career!
9. I'd just like to go on record by saying that the scenario Economy of Forces should have a warning label indicating that contents may severely hurt your brain when played. I also recommend that the developer, Nabla should viewed as a most dangerous individual! OUCH!!
10. Hey Treeburst, My opponent and I (Jack trap and Massattack) have received scenario #1. I received it at 10:22 pm pac time. This battle already gives me the shivers!! Good luck to all!
11. Hey Wild Bill, Did you intend for an easier back-door approach? Because I sure found one. Playing Allied and using all default settings, including unit position, I was able to secure an axis surrender on turn 21, while keeping more than 1/2 of my armour alive and 2/3's of my infantry embarked throughout the game. Suffice to say the AI does not re-adjust well to flank attacks. Thanks for sharing your creative skills, I'm really looking forward to the unbalanced battles to come in the Nordic series (or wannabee, in my case).
12. hey Treeburst, This might go beyond the scope of what you had in mind, but could we review other people's AAR's at the end of the tournament? Also, to whom do we send these documents?
13. I, for one, am glad that horses will not be included in the next CM game, if for no other reason, because of all the idiotic threads regarding the correct morale algorithm assigned the animals and whether a veteran horse is worth the cost versus a regular horse!
14.
quote:
Originally posted by Lopaka: My point, Mr. Trap (if that's YOUR real name), is that if you are "defining" yourself one way and you act another way, you may offend your opponent. That's why it is important to let your opponent know beforehand that there may be some elasticity in your adherence to your definitions.

You are right about that. But don't blame me for confusing that tank of yours. It was trying to be a Greyhound but it ran like a dachshund!!
15. Well Mr. Lopaka (if that is your real name ), I not did mean to imply that we would be restricted by how we define ourselves with the gameyness points #'s 1-8. These are not rules, I think that has been stated several times already. These are points for discussion for two strangers that MAY have very different ideas of what is responsible game play, and therefor have different ideas as to what to expect. It's a proactive appoach to conflict resolution, which is a bit ironic since we're discussing a game of war. So there.
16. The point of the gameyness points #1-8 are not hard fast rules by which to play. They are themselves general tactics that were unlikely to be employed during WW2. Specific situations will come up from time to time in they would be used. It sounds like you've described one of those situations. Remember, the point is not that you are disallowed to use ANY of these tactics, rather, it is to notify your opponent(s) of your play style before the battle begins- that's it. For example, I will sometimes use crews (with ammo) for light recon work and include them in reinforcement groups. I think that this works for me and is not gamey, but since a general consensus holds that it is- I tell my opponents. Now if you make a habit of torching key squares on the map, then say so. Just because you found a specific situation that made sense to do so, you are not a gamey player per se.
17. You know, if we combined the two tournaments, we would have six CM enthusiasts assigned to Section Eight! Just a thought.
18. Mr. Steak Sauce, I can start with you as soon as the scenarios (and passwords) are delivered. Attention: THumpre, Ricochet, Massattack and White4 (I e-mailed you tonight). I was hoping to play two games at a time, going in numeric order from #1. So I would like to start with Massattack and A1steaks asap, followed by Ricochet, White4 then Thumpre. Let me know if this works for you guys. I am flexible... I am just trying to keep everything strait. Good hunting all!
19. Hey CMplayer, How does that mini-step strategy differ from a hunt-reverse-hunt-reverse series of commands. I agree that command stacking enables fast reaction, I don't immediately see the advantage of multiple hunt commands if they are all in the same direction. PS Peter Panzer, your game got a good chuckle from me.
20. If I understand the intention of establishing the "gamey" points #1-8 correctly, then these guidelines are NOT to be used by one player to restrict the actions of another, instead they are to be used to help each of us describe our own play style to our opponent prior to the start of a battle.
21. Thank you Treeburst for laying down some basic guidelines (and all that other stuff too). Tactics #1 through #8 have proven to me to not only reflect poor-sports-person-ship (PC and how), but also are bad strategy in general. The only real "gamey" issue that will undoubtedly come up again and again is #8- flag rushing. My experience suggests that everyone's behavior changes toward the end of a battle- either in defense or offence. While gamey, it is simply human nature to take advantage of the clock, the question is to what extent. While discussing human nature can be fun, the reason I post this is to suggest that all these above stated guidelines will be ignored at different times by different people, either consciously or not. I think that we all should assume that no rule is written in stone. For those that take offense to such tactics, they should make their positions known. I don't think that the collective experiences will be enhanced by people acting as gamey cops. In other words, unless previously agreed, do not cry foul for minor infractions. I don't play to win, I play to play, and this looks like a great deal of fun (and frustration).
22. Are there any guidelines as to what is "gamey" (a now hated word), and therefor not an acceptable use of units? If I am going to be referred to another thread, please be as specifc as possible. Thank you Treeburst, and all of those supplying the scenarios. We will make good use of them!
23. If you'd read the bottle, it clearly says, "for truck drivers only!"
24. If you've got a machine gun pillbox that will is/or will be in the LOS of armour, a hide command may keep it alive for a couple more turns than otherwise. Its a special circumstance, but that very strategy worked well for me. With three Churchills hunting down the road buttoned-up, I kept it hidden till after they were out of LOS. I then opened the mg on the troops and trucks that were following the tanks- very pleasing results. I lost the pill box several turns later, but I think I achieved more damage and disrupted the opponents assault convoy. Depending on the situation it may be best to start a game with the pill boxes hidden.
