  1. Thanks Mr.Schrullenhaft. will do these things. Micro-soft help people told me that the problem was NOT with Win2000 or any drivers because the dark screen occurs before Windows has loaded (In fact it does not load when this problem occurs). As I did update my BIOS to handle Win 2000 could that be the problem. I have a K7S5A MB
  2. Many thanks for the quick response. 1) I did have Dx 7.0 now have 9.0 2) NVidia verson is 4.1.0.9 3) No patches 4) Define monitor - I think this might be a problem, thing is I can't seem to find the place to add a new monitor - can you help ? One more odd thing - at re-boot I get the dark screen about 4 out of 5 re-boots. The fix is to get into BIOS and re-set the detect Plug and play option from NO to YES and back to NO again. Then F10 to continue - works about 50% of the time - very strange ??
  3. I just did a clean install of Win 2K (Which took two calls to MS help desk)and re-loaded CMBB. The load seemed OK but when I start the game my screen (Sony Monitor) goes blank - no options to accept settings etc. I deleted to the prefs file - same thing ? I should also point out that even re-booting my machine results in 4 out 5 attempts going to a dark screen ?? Only way I can get the screen to come on is to power down and very quickly power up and start the computer - sounds ridiculous, but it works. I removed the NVidia driver and even with just VGA same thing happens. Anyone got any ideas ?? If any of my game opponents read this, it might be some time before I get back into action - sorry.
  4. Could someone explain to me what's the difference between "Normal" mods and CMMOS 4.02 mods. I am not a computer wiz-kid, so explaining the technology on me would be a waste of time. Just want to know how and where to use them. Thanks.
  5. I was wondering if anyone knows how effective the Sneak command is at moving units without being seen. For instance, to get from point A to point B without being seen one would usually spend a lot of time at ground level searching for the best route offering most cover, then plot it over several way points. Would the unit follow a similar, well covered route by just issuing a "Sneak" command from point A to point B.
  6. My wife told me I am addicted to this game, I thought about it for a minute and realized she is correct. Now, I don't recall seeing any warning labels on the CD sleeve about the possible dangers of addiction while using this product. Maybe BF could be sued ?? I wonder, have any relationships or employment problems actually occured because of the addictive nature of this product. Maybe BF could reduce the level of addiction stuff they put into their games, and market to minors. But please don't reduce the addictive levels of any new games in the pipe-line. Just label them "For Adults Only - use at your own risk" Just kidding BF lol. he he he !!
  7. Solved the stutter problem, maybe this will be of help to others. My mouse went bad !!! One of my computer savy PBEM contacts suggested I try another mouse, seemed like a simple thing to do so I did and it worked perfectly. I stripped my original mouse right down to it's bare bones and cleaned everything, still gave problems, I assumed an electrical or wire problem. So I rushed out and bought a mid-price logitec and since then everything has been fine.
  8. I see many references to a second patch for CMBB. Is this just wishfull thinking or is it really being considered? If a second patch is on the cards, where can we view the proposed changes and send our "Wish-List"
  9. I guess there is no single (or simple) answer to my original, rather poorly defined question. The one thing that does come close to what I was looking for is that on a simple straight run, the maximum speed attained is lower in reverse than fast forward. Thankyou all - now let's spin this Churchill around and zoom off to other side of the battle field without being seen or heard !! lol
  10. Got both, been playing CMBO almost since it came out and CMBB since it came out. Trying very, very hard to like CMBB but it just is not as much fun for me. So, I play CMBO 70% of my games and CMBB 30% of the games. Interestingly the 30% of CMBB games occupy about 70% of my alloted playing time - another reason I don't like CMBB - it's so slow, don't move more than 100 meteres, then rest a couple of turns otherwise your troops get tired, poor things - boring !!!
  11. Hi Mr.Schrullenhaft - my computer stuttering has come back worse than ever, - the computer twice froze solid today (It is just 9F outside, but I am sure this has nothing to do with it ?). Win 98 SE, 1.1 Ghz Athlon, 256 Mb RAM, NVidia Gforce 4.2. No harware changes made for a very long time. MAchine is shut off and re-booted often. I am quite sure no background progs are running, could a harware fault such as overheating CPU or bad memory, or bad connectors show these symptoms of computer stutter ?? I originally thought it was just when playing CM, but now I notice that the mouse arrow sometimes appears jerky even when not playing CM. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
  12. Anyone know if vehicles travel at the same speed in reverse as they do in "Fast Move" forward ?
  13. Thanks to all for the info' and advice, and Happy Thanksgiving to those that celebrate it. (As a Brit living in USA, I join in as an excuse to train my stomach in time for Christmas - he,he). Seems like people are happy with the Samsung, so I think that's the brand I'll go for, now just got to figure out what model Santa can afford. The LiYama looks great, but quite rare here in the USA and pretty pricy.
  14. Sorry to hear about your PC, maybe you could get one of those Kangaroo's to jump all over it, claim insurance and get a new one LOL
  15. Its getting near to Christmas and I am writing to Santa for a flat screen (LCD ??) monitor. Given that my computer is used 99% of the time playing Combat Mission I thought I might ask the advice of this forum on what type of LCD monitor is 100% comapable / playable with CM ?? I kinda like the idea of the speakers built into the sides of the monitor, I have my screen set to 1074 X 768 using a 17" Sony 200sx at present - Any recommendations ??
  16. I'm sorry, sean, but I don't follow here as to what you mean by "slow crunch time" for the AI. I've now played CMBB repeatedly at comparable point levels to what you're saying, and from earlier play in CMBO, there didn't seem to be much difference to me. What I do know that slows up calculations a bit are intense combat and long-range ordnance fire, but that was an issue with CMBO too. BTW, according to the documentation on v1.01, the "calculation speed" is supposed to be improved. Check the following: CMBB Patch 1.01 Readme THER'S A PATCH OUT FOR CMBB ALREADY ?? HOW COME I MISSED IT - NOT ANYWHERE IN THE BF SUPPORT OR ANY OTHER AREA I CAN SEE, WHERE CAN I DOWNLOAD IT PLEASE Or, more directly, "Action computation is about 15% faster" There's always CMBO if your interest for gaming the UK side is too daunting. While I'd personally like for CMBB standards to be applied to an interim new "West Front" game, Apparently we'll have to wait for a whole new CM game engine, some day in the future, to come back to this.</font>
  17. I FINALLY FIGURED OUT A FEW REASONS WHY I DON'T ENJOY CMBB AS MUCH AS CMBO 1)Size of the shell explosions !! Mostly they are tiny little nicks in the grass that I can't see unless at ground level. 2)The tracers are very hard to see (Even with the tracer mod). 3) Vehicles often just go "Clunk" and die - very boring. 4) Troops get tired too easily making for many boring turns until they get to where the action is. CMBB can be just to much hard work. Maybe this is realistic and there are a number of people out there that want that. Well how about some Mods that satisfy those of us that like the "Cartoon" type explosions etc..
  18. Thanks for the quick response and helpfull advise. 1) Using Ctrl-Alt-Del I shutdown all non-essential progs. (Actually there was nothing additional running that I have not had running for months anyway). This did not fix it. 2) I have not updated any drivers, because everything was running just fine. 3) Stuttering occurs about once every two or three minutes, even if I am not using mouse etc. 4) I do re-boot every day and load up CM every day. 5) I did download a POP-UP Killer prog. from the web and also Window Washer. This does coincide with the start of the problem (I think). They are not in my start folder, I have to manually start them, BUT could they be "Active" somewhere in the background ?? if so how do I find out and get rid of them.
  19. What happened - my message got posted while I was still writing it ? So to continue, This "Stuttering" has just started to happen after months of trouble free game play, I have not added any mods, but did download some scenarios (Not yet played). I run Win98 on an Athlon 1.1Mhz and nVidia G force Ti4200 Sound is on-board my K7S5A motherboard. Any guidance will be greatly appreciated.
  20. Can anyone out there help me solve this sudden and strange problem. When playing either CMBB or CMBO the sound and video occaisionally stops for a very short time (less than a second) then resumes again.
  21. Took me a while to figure out the code you gave - but finally got it (ALT with the SHIFT and the . Now ESC works fine - thanks very much. Where the hell did you find that little trick??
  22. Enable the ESC key ?? - how do you do that.
  23. Anyone else notice that in CMBB it takes a long time before the "Quit-to-desktop" (ALT Tab) will work after saving a PBEM game ?? Also, on my machine the left ALT + tab only works occaisionally, the right ALT tab works always, but very long time delay after saving a PBEM ?? Is this normal ? In CMBO the ESC key works instantly.
  24. At the end of a game some opponents have wanted my password so that they can re-play all the turns in the just-finished battle. Reviewing the battle from an opponents view seems like a very reasonable and enjoyable thing to do. Until we get a full game replay feature, this method does at least allow the players to study the battle from the enemies side. The problem is I like to keep one password for all battles, so giving it away means I now need to use (AND REMEMBER) another PW. It would be nice if at the end of a game the password lock could be wiped out for all turns relating to the finished game. Would this be possible ??
  25. I keep trying, but I still don't like CMBB. I am not entirely sure why? One thing I have trouble with is seeing what's going on and where things are. It also seems to me that the Axis forces are virtually invincible and the Russian forces die at the sight of a weapon. Right now I have PBEM going on and all I can do as Russians is just sit here and get pounded, tank hunters are next to useless unless very close and a good opponent keeps his tanks well back. When playing Axis against the AI I can win without even thinking. The shock-waves and exagerated explosions in CMBO might be un-realistic, but I like them and I do play the game for fun. Maybe CMBB will get sufficient mods and patches to make it as fun to play as CMBO AND keep all the un-deniable improvements of CMBB.
