  1. With the case closed CPU went up a bit 50 - 56C, and MB 36 - 38C. This seems very reasonable to me, Probe has logged a couple of days temp at 54 - 56C. The freeze-up problem has not occured at all since I cleaned out the dust etc. I doubt this was the cause but I will never know ?? Intermitant faults are a real nuisance. Anyway, all is well so no more posts from me - Thanks again to you all for the advice and comments.
  2. Thanks to everyone for the advice and tips. I removed, cleaned, re-seated all the obvious components including memory. I did not notice anything bad, there was however a lot of dust on the fans (Two case fans, one Power Suply fan, CPU fan and Vid card fan). Got "probe" and reads CPU = 50C, MB = 36C with my case open. (I should do this again with case closed). Cool+Quite does not show anything other than CPU speed at 2400 Mhz, I can't get it to do anything else? So far I have not had any lock-ups since the clean up, but I have also had the case open. I'll button up now I think and see what happens over the next few days.
  3. Hello Schrullenhaft, thanks for acknowledging my original question The problem is so infrequent (2-3 times a week for the past month) that I don't have any other observations to help with the diagnosis. However, the fan speed on the CPU does sometimes run very, very fast and gets noisy, on these occaisions I have not had any issues of freezing up. I am going to do a simple strip-down and check for things like dust, heat sink condition connectors etc, etc just to be sure nothing simple is the problem. For discussions sake - supposing it is an over-heating problem, would overheating of the video card cause the computer to freeze and the single beep ??
  4. Thanks JasonC - this sounds serious, but I wonder why this would show up after a long, long time with no problems. Also there must be a gizzilion people with AMD and NVidia systems, I am assuming this is a "Rare" situation, any ideas on what kind of circumstances might trigger this conflict ??
  5. Hi good people - anyone got an answer for my recent problem: While "Flying" around during CMAK and CMBO battles the screen sometimes just freezes, the computer locks up (Ctl/Alt/Del will not work) and I get a single Beep from my box, this single beep sometimes repeats itself. Only way out is to re-boot. I got windows 2000, Asus K8V SE MB,GE force Ti 4200 graphics card, Athlon 64, 500 mb RAM. No changes to the system for over a year and it has worked perfectly up till now ??? Any clues or suggestions will be much appreciated.
  6. Question about this new MAC software that allows Win XP to be run on a MAC Does this feature now make it easier to run CMBO, CMAK etc on a MAC ?? I would love a MAC, but not being able to play CM without a load of hassles is stopping me - maybe the solution is hire now ??
  7. Thanks for the comments guys, I did not mention that I am using Windows 2000 prof, an HP 1215 Photosmart and have a good self-built box using ASUS K8V SE Mobo, Athlon 64 and 512 MB RAM. I don't suppose that helps you much. I can live with this minor inconvenience, but it seems to me that there should a a work-around somehow ??
  8. Ahh!! wife invades CMAK terratory !!! My wife recently got a laptop and shares my printer via wireless link. Whenever I have CMAK or CMBO loaded her print jobs take forever. As soon as I shutdown the games print job speeds up to normal. The slow printing happens even if I am not actually playing the game. Can anyone explain why this is, better still offer a solution?
  9. I am not very computer savy, but I get the impression from reading some messages here that it is possible to convert CMBO scenarios into CMAK - is this possible ? Does the "Converted" scenario then take on the attributes of CMAK, things like Cover arc, etc.. etc..? If all the is possible I would be eternally gratefull to anyone who would convert the CMBO scenario "Hello Second Armored" into a CMAK game. I still love playing CMBO and the above scenario is one of the most enjoyable to play PBEM. Any takers ??
  10. Cancel my request for help - just found out that if I close the games by "retreating" instead of closing from "Task Manager" the prefs file get written all works fine when I re-start. (I got into the habit of using Task Manager to exit while my graphics card driver was messed up)
  11. After weeks of struggling to get my NVidia drivers removed and replaced I finally have the system working great, I can now switch in and out of the game without getting a black screen, graphics work fine and the "ESC" key gets me back to desktop from a game. Only one small problem remains: Each time I load up CMAK or CMBO I get the "Do you want this screen resolution quetion." I found out that I have no prefs file in either CMBO or CMAK. Anyone know how I can get these files back so I don't keep getting the Screen resolution question.
  12. Thanks Schrullenhaft for the information - I now have my system runing like it did a few weeks ago which is just fine. I don't really know how it got in a mess, nor do I have a clean time-line of what happened and what I did, so no accurate conclusions can be extracted from information posted by me. Like many of us I don't keep an accurate log of what I do, especially in the early stages of a problem when we often don't know a problem even exists. Ahh such is life in this technological world !! LOL Now back to the battles CMBO and CMAK rule !!!
  13. I think I have fixed the problem - it seems that my Sony LCD display driver got changed. I reloaded the driver that came with the LCD and everything seems OK now. Further, I suspect that the Auto Windows update thing tried to help me by putting in a "Better" driver. I am going to turn this "Auto-update feature OFF. If the problem comes back I will follow your detailed instructions - many thanks....
  14. Thanks for the advice - I did update to DirX 9.0c, and made sure I had updated sound drivers. I actually went back on my vid drivers to 77.... which I had for a long time without problem. I have not experienced to sound drop, but there again it was random before. Unfortunately now I cant switch in and out of CMAK because the screen goes black. I have to go to task manager and stop CMAK, then re-load it. What a pain that is. Clearly something bad is going on with my rig...
  15. I have noticed a strange problem recently: On occaisions when I change camera angle from 4 to 1 while locked on a unit the sound system dies !! This happens in CMBO and CMAK !!! The only way to get sound back is to shutdown the CM game and re-start it. I run Windows 2000 on a K7S5A MB using its on-board sound system (AC97 SIS...) I have had this system for 5 years without this problem. I have a GeForce4 Ti 4200 graphics card. Anyone got suggestions on what's going on and how to fix it ? Thanks
  16. I know I read something about this before, but I can't find the reference - can someone assist please: My Auto-save in CMAK seems to be stuck with an old game, each time I stop playing or close the game for a while I normally save the game with a unique file name as normal. I recently forgot to do this, so went to load the Auto-save file assuming it would have the latest turn. But no, it had some old file from months ago in it. I can't seem to get it to update - anyone have an answer to this ?
  17. I have managed to fix the white-out problem on my machine. It took a lot of time and risky work in the registry, but I finally cleared out all refs to Nvidia from my machine including the registry and re-installed drivers (7.1.8.9). I did not do anything to the bitmap files, so they were probably not the problem. Everything works fine now with AA and the other high quality graphics thingy at full setting.
  18. Thanks - I did as you suggested and install seemed to go OK - Hardware confirms the latest drivers are in use. BUT - the graphics quality is now very bad - lots of jagged edges. I messed around with AA and Anisotropic settings from off to full, did not seem to make any difference?? What else should I try to get graphics back to where they were (Very good)
  19. I know this has been mentioned before, but I could not find an answer to my problem using the search option: Occaisionally on CMAK if I switch in and out of the game I get white patches where the graphics should be, Rocks are white, parts of armor are white plus a host of other things. I can get back to good graphics by "Aborting" the game and loading up again. Anyone know why this happens sometimes and how I can fix it ? System = Windows 2000, GeForceTi 4200, 6.6.9.3 drivers, Athlon XP2600+.
  20. I am under pressure to get my wife a laptop / notebook computer. My rule is any computer that enters this house has got to be able to play CM. I have never owned a portable so don't know much about them, any tips or advise about which ones will play CM well would be greatly appreciated.
  21. Hi Treeburst155 - glad to hear the latest drivers work for you, they don't for me (Yet). I also have the same Vid card as you and have never had problems if I did not use the hi quality settings (antialias etc.) I installed the latest drivers and everything OK except some vehicles have a "White-out" area on them. In particular any vehicle on fire the flames are just white. Quality settings are at max, I have not tried others settings yet. Anyone know what this might be and how to fix.
  22. Thanks for the quick response Schrullenhaft IF I did got to Mac it would be to their newer units (G5 or some such name), so that pretty much decides it for me, without CMBO or CMAK, life woud not be worth living !!! I guess I'll have to stick with PC, shame that MAC stuff looks awfully good......
  23. I am considering switching from PC to Mac, BUT CMAK and CMBO must play well. Anyone out there got any comments, experience with Mac and these games? I know "diddly sqaut" about Macs, but after spending 30 minutes in one of their Mall showrooms I was very, very impressed
  24. I get, 1.03; 0.59; 1.01; 1.01 AMD Athlon XP 2600+ (runs at 1640 MHz), Barton core - not overclocked - 512 MB RAM PC2100
  25. Sometimes when I receive a PBEM turn I get the message "Play-By-Email Data Follows This Line" in the body of the text and then hundreds of lines filled with "Garbage" (Game turn data I suppose). When this happens my computer takes forever to open the EMail and if I reply to it it takes even longer for the computer to process the simple task of sending the email. It does not happen with every opponent, and when I send a turn to myself it does not happen. Anyone know why this happens and what can be done to stop it ??
