  1. MO - Ouch! What seems to be missing from the article is whether the fine MD is actually under any criminal charges, or disbarment. Mmmmm. http://www.healthgrades.com/directory_search/physician/profiles/dr-md-reports/dr-michael-reinstein-md-b70cc656 No malpractice?! And a track record http://pharmagossip.blogspot.com/2009/11/dr-michael-reinstein-clozaril-king-is.html
  2. But perhaps this one case shows just how corrupting money can be to a doctor, and how drug companies and they collude. And sod the patients. http://www.propublica.org/article/reinstein-seroquel-astrazeneca-chicago-1111 Drugmaker Paid Psychiatrist Nearly $500,000 to Promote Antipsychotic, Despite Doubts About Research by Christina Jewett, ProPublica, and Sam Roe, Chicago Tribune Nov. 11, 2009, 2:42 a.m.
  3. I was casting around for possible reasons that the US spent vast amounts on medicine and yet had generally poor value for the money spent. And part of me wonders how coarsely made are the amounts calculated and I would be interested in how the figures are calculated. Is it possible that plastic surgery makes up a large chunk of the overall total? after labour are drugs the biggest cost? Now some of the possibilities for why there is poor health might be 1. in the obesity levels where Australia and the US lead the world 2. poor nutrition regardless of amount 3. environmental factors - these excellent articles reveals aspects 4. Over-medication 5. Making the system more expensive - as in abortion cases 1. http://www.cdc.gov/obesity/data/trends.html 2. http://www.healthnewstrack.com/health-news-2424.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nutrition Wikipedia 3. http://www.alternet.org/environment/150888/say_what_a_chemical_can_damage_your_lungs%2C_liver_and_kidneys_and_still_be_labeled_%22non-toxic%22 http://www.alternet.org/food/150443/breasts_at_7_years_old%3A_how_chemical_hazards_may_wreak_havoc_on_children%27s_bodies?page=2 4. http://www.propublica.org/blog/item/citing-drug-industry-influence-watchdog-says-overmedication-of-nursing-home 5. http://www.guttmacher.org/statecenter/updates/2011/statetrends12011.html
  4. Conscripting blokes over 60----this is funny & obviously written by a Former (Australian) Soldier............ I am over 60 and the Defence Force thinks I'm too old to track down terrorists. You can't be older than 42 to join the military. They've got the whole thing arseup. Instead of sending 18-year olds off to fight, they ought to take us old blokes. You shouldn't be able to join a defence unit until you're at least 35. For starters: Researchers say 18-year-olds think about sex every 10 seconds. Old blokes only think about sex a couple of times a day, leaving us more than 28,000 additional seconds per day to concentrate on the enemy. Young blokes haven't lived long enough to be cranky, and a cranky soldier is a dangerous soldier.. 'My back hurts! I can't sleep, I'm tired and hungry'. We are impatient and maybe letting us kill some arsehole that desperately deserves it will make us feel better and shut us up for a while. An 18-year-old doesn't even like to get up before 10 am. Old blokes always get up early to pee so what the hell. Besides, like I said, 'I'm tired and can't sleep and since I'm already up, I may as well be up killing some fanatical arsehole. If captured we couldn't spill the beans because we'd forget where we put them. In fact, name, rank and serial number would be a real brainteaser. Training would be easier for old blokes.. We're used to getting screamed and yelled at and we're used to soft food. We've also developed an appreciation for guns. We've been using them for years as an excuse to get out of the house, away from the screaming and yelling. They could lighten up on the obstacle course however. I've been in combat and didn't see a single 20-foot wall with rope hanging over the side, nor did I ever do any push-ups after completing basic training. Actually, the running part is kind of a waste of energy, too. I've never seen anyone outrun a bullet. An 18-year-old has the whole world ahead of him. He's still learning to shave, to start up a conversation with a pretty sheila. He still hasn't figured out that a baseball cap has a brim to shade his eyes, not the back of his head. He still hasn't worked our that below the hip jeans or shorts will trip him up one way or another. But who said it looks good anyway? Duuuuur These are all great reasons to keep our kids at home to learn a little more about life before sending them off into harm's way.. Let us old farts track down those dirty rotten coward terrorists. The last thing an enemy would want to see is a couple of million pissed off old farts with attitudes and automatic weapons who know that their best years are already behind them. ***How about recruiting Women over 50 ....in menopause!!! You think Men have attitudes !!! Ohhhhhhhhhhhh my God!!! If nothing else, put them on boat people border patrol in West Australia They will have it secured the first night! Send this to all of your senior friends...it's in big type so they can read it.
  5. I was, and am concerned, at the charges and mentioned it some months ago. I have ordered three copies for me and friends to share the postal costs. However I do think that this is a clunky mechanism with no guarantee that we will escape VAT charges but the handling fee becomes less onerous I assume.
  6. Well gunnergoz given that the Blue air on Blue land who were not expecting to be attacked and were probably not as wise to air attacks the lack of kills per attack [ other then heavy bombers] seems significantly at variance with popular belief. I cannot find out who compiled the Blue on Blue list and I thought it came from this seven page thread http://www.dupuyinstitute.org/ubb/Forum5/HTML/000010.html which starts with: As for the Blue info - so far- [and it looks like it is the kind of thing we could all add to]
  7. Fortunately the Chinese have a history of needing to be frugal so despite them liking bling and everything else there is a practical streak that means the Govt is seen to be be necessary to regulate the country. Hopefully this can filter down a generation or two more.
  8. Also at TDI blue on blue air attacks are discussed and listed in detail. Here is the preamble: Here is a sample 8 June 1944 RAF Typhoons attacked the 175th Infantry Regiment, US 29th Division on the Isigny Highway, causing 24 casualties. Balkoski, p.169. 10 July 1944 RAF Typhoons attacked the 4th Dorsets, 43rd Wessex Division during a battle for Hill 112 in the Odon. At least two men were seriously wounded. Saunders, p.118. 31 July 1944 At about 1845 hrs RAF Typhoons rocketed the staging area of the Grenadier Guards (British Guards Armoured Division). Nicolson & Forbes vol.I, p.82. 31 July 1944 At 2200 hrs RAF Typhoons attacked the Grenadier Guards for the second time. As 1st Squadron tanks neared the objective, the Typhoons dropped sixteen bombs on them, followed by eight aircraft firing rockets. Fortunately this group of RAF pilots hit everything but the targets, with no losses inflicted according to Nicolson & Forbes, vol.I, p.82. 4 August 1944 RAF Typhoons attacked several half tracks of the British 43rd Wessex Division near Jurques. Two men were wounded. Essame, p.63. Not as deadly as the flyboys would have you believe then.
  9. Soft-skins are one thing armour another. Anyway lets look at flyboy overclaims and this taken from The Dupuy Institute thread and the bits I have quoted from Chris Lawrence against Just for fun Glantz is quoted: The thread is worth reading at TDI. Perhaps the final comment:
  10. SO are you implying that all those roads are not directly funded by drivers! Thats atrocious. Only those that use certain roads should pay for them. : )
  11. Good angle, good reply gunner. I wish I had thought of it. From an excellent article here - with some suggestions: http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMp0807204
  12. Tardy. Hells teeth no! I now confirm I was trying to tease noob and it shows how you can go wrong when writing. A 45 turn game we played finished last week in total 11 days .... and it wasn't TCP/IP either : )
  13. OK noob but I am still waiting your first turn!! And now after waiting patiently all day I am off to bed : (
  14. If you watch the first Tati film I think that is a good indicator of what a village looked like , and the road types. Its also rather good
  15. Agree about spread. Way too tight. Especially as I expect the firing to be further than 6 miles more often than not. However as I do not know for sure ...any naval grogs here with info on Normandy monitor and battleship actions I did check the RoF also
  16. You may then say that when these people opined the pithy saying politics was less managed. http://www.alternet.org/news/150864/unlimited_secret_money_is_drowning_democratic_elections SO do you think it is possible that business groups are prepared to pay for a Government more favourable to them. And it just may include medical groups. I think it is fairly common that those who spend most get elected in the US [a few exceptions]. What is going on in Wisconsin with recall votes is actually very encouraging as it shows that though you can hornswoggle an electorate there is a means to kickback. Not all countries are as fortunate. Are democracies able to take difficult decisions - or should I say politicians in power. Is the structure wrong ? Should Civil Service think tanks come forward with the ideas and then the Party skin is not so much in the game. I thought I would look at what I consider well-governed countries - though both are small - Switzerland and Singapore. All is not roses in either. Switzerland has some supporters though whether the US providers could be trusted, and the population make up allows it to work must be moot, Interestingly this came from a 2009 Singaporean article: Might explain some of the US cost problems. I think my chief solution is to educate the public that there has to be limits on what a Health Service can do.
  17. Alsation Felix [over at WeBoB] acquired the log for a TD and has plotted it across Europe. http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=105080627914645872633.0004762bac6086ffa5410&t=h&ll=51.055207,5.427246&spn=9.603365,19.665527&z=6 Have a look it is interesting from the point of view of what did not happen, or possibly did not get logged. As in the downtime or lack of action. A great idea actually carried through.
  18. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Health_effects_of_tea Very interesting article. Some of the research may be bullish but some probably has a grain of truth - particularly the inverse stomach cancer result. I am glad I drink tea - but it is black tea ... with milk and sweetener.
  19. http://www.equalitytrust.org.uk/ Shows that countries with greater equality offer better health and longer life. This effect also works in the individual US states. The book, available in the US also The Spirit Level - Richard Wilkinson If you check the site you will find the attacks mounted on it by people who believe, presumably, large inequality is good. The rebuttals in themselves highlight the quality of information used. Essentially the health of society is not just down to diet but cohesiveness. Particularly interesting to us would be the information on those who belong to groups live longer, and slightly left field , heal more quickly. It covers more than health, looking at homicide , prisons , happiness etc etc, so probably 100 + graphs in 300 pages. Some of the info is quite interesting - a baby born in the US is twice as likely to die in its first year as in Greece which spends half as much. However the book is not out and out dogmatic - it just provides lots of comparable official figures and sees how they match up.
  20. I agree that is the point. However you seem to be saying it is some sort of bad thing. If you have the money you can have as much health care as you wish - even if there is a national health system. : ) What countries with national health systems need to be aware of is the self-evident truth that the medical world is adept at selling extremely expensively what could be cheaper. Secondly that if one does not have an infinite pot of money then one needs to prioritise, and also educate the electorate what is and is not possible/included in a national health system. Thirdly perhaps getting people to accept the fact that people do die. And there is nothing medical that is going to stop it. We are always seeing heartfelt pleas for IVF treatment, for a drug that will mean someone gets another year or so of life for a mere £30000 p.a. . I have no problem if people wish to top up their cover, or subscribe to charities for IVF research, or some church or firm based scheme. However in my book the examples I give represent the sort of medical area which is neither urgent or mandatory and would not be value for money. A national health system should also look and persuade people to healthy choices so that they can enjoy as much normal life as possible before old age takes the fun away. And accepting that euthanasia as an option for people is also probably desirable to get sorted as medical advances look increasingly able to keep people alive beyond what they may wish.
  21. Well lets home the need to be over there is brief AB and you can get back to the US - to torment us : ) I don't know where you get your figures from AB but these are from Wikipedia, and include US figures courtesy of Wikileaks Source Iraqi casualties Time period Iraq Family Health Survey 151,000 deaths March 2003 to June 2006 Lancet survey 601,027 violent deaths out of 654,965 excess deaths March 2003 to June 2006 Opinion Research Business survey 1,033,000 deaths as a result of the conflict March 2003 to August 2007 Associated Press 110,600 deaths March 2003 to April 2009 Iraq Body Count project 98,170 — 107,152 civilian deaths as a result of the conflict. 150,726 civilian and combatant deaths[1] March 2003 to October 2010 WikiLeaks. Classified Iraq war logs[1][2][3][4] 104,924 recorded iraqi deaths, including 92,003[5] (or 66,081[6]) civilian deaths. January 2004 to December 2009 You say - does that mean when the US leaves that will end the fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. I think you are being optimistic. But it may well reduce any US based attacks As for the terrorist attacks can you give the sources for the information.
  22. Aneurysms, burst blood vessels in the brain and what increases the risk: Percentage of bursts due to: Coffee 10.6% Vigorous exercise 7.9% Nose blowing 5.4% Sex 4.3% Straining to defecate 3.6% Drinking cola 3.5% Being startled 2.7% Being angry 1.3%Given the age of this forum its probably good to know! Fuller details here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-13294022 Nose blowing - why is that shown separately form normal sex? : )
  23. VAB - you really ought to read all the article : ) They say there were four helicoptors - which still seems very skinny if something were to go wrong as 25 people seems to be the highest figure I have seen for a normal model. As for Yugoslavia I believe it was a humanitarian interest. In any event it got results rather than standing by saying how awful it was that Christians were massacring Muslims.
