Didn't I also read where the weather would impact the morale of the troops? Sounds logical. And I certainly hope there's Russian dog mines in CM2. No eastern front would be complete without them!

Interesting history lesson, Slapdragon. Thanks! -
turn you blasted tank!
Hilltopper replied to Chad Harrison's topic in Combat Mission Archive #3 (2001)
Ahhh...thanks, SlapDragon. I fiqured someone would know the answer. BTW, the term "easy 8" was also a reference to the E8 designation. Probably not telling you anything new. -

My father was in armor in the Korean War and told me that Sherman's rotated very easily. He was on an M4A3E8. He said they called them "easy 8's" since you could easily run a fiqure 8 pattern. However, not sure that this model served in the second world war. I am sure someone knows for sure. -
German Soldats...what are they saying?
Hilltopper replied to Hilltopper's topic in Combat Mission Archive #3 (2001)
Ahhh...Mississippi troops...that explains the "Lookie them thar Germans runnin' up a tree like a mess of possums" wav file. Of course, it could be eastern Kentucky troops. -
German Soldats...what are they saying?

Thanks for the info! BTW, I think the "pickle" one is wav 2013. But without all the surrounding combat sounds, it sounds more like "vanna dickem". hehe, at least after a few beers! -
German Soldats...what are they saying?
Hilltopper posted a topic in Combat Mission Archive #3 (2001)
Sorry to ask this question, but maybe some of the German folks on here can answer this... I've played this game for a long time now and wondered what in the world the German soldiers are saying. This is kinda embarassing since my ancestors are from Germany...alas, we didn't keep up with the language. Although they had to learn Shawnee and Cherokee. Some of words shouted during the game are obvious (like Panzer!), but I swear there's one guy that sounds like he's yelling "Have a pickle"! -
Lt. Bull, I was thinking about the same thing. Any compensation should first go to the peoples he destroyed. But besides, this sounds more like a joke than reality. I only know of one sibling of Hitler's and he had a sister (maybe it was a half sister; can't remember my history right now). Think her name was Hannah or something and she too was Austrian. About 5-10 years older than he. I had to read Mein Kampf in high school government class (along with the Communist Manifesto) and remember as being a master joke with so many fragmented thoughts it was actually hard to keep up with. Funny thing, you'd think the good folks in Germany would have actually read that thing, they'd would have known what was in store for them. I guess it's kinda like that everywhere...people don't like to do their own research, just have it spoon fed to them.

Most Overrated Military Commander of WWII
Hilltopper replied to CombinedArms's topic in Combat Mission Archive #3 (2001)
How are you defining "worst"? Worse at tactics, the worst at table manners? Worst at everything? If it's everything, I'd have to say Hitler. He was a complete knucklehead. Remember, he had placed himself as the Supreme head honcho in charge of every thing militarily. So in a few words, he sucked hard in tactics and everything else related. -
How will you use your SturmTiger?
Hilltopper replied to Snake Eyes's topic in Combat Mission Archive #3 (2001)
That's pretty interesting...I had no idea that the Lynx, Puma, etc, had not been mass produced. I learn something every day here! One thing this 380mm slow monster could do is provide a good decoy. While everyone on the planet is aiming at this thing, the best route would be to run your armor around to the flanks of those doing the aiming and take out a couple. -
Just wondering what everyone's thoughts were on this, but I've often wondered why sending a barrage of 8 inchers into a forest wouldn't level it somewhat to run tanks through it. It would seem to me that a good arty volley would allow this. Would this not be realistic?

US Civil War/Naval version of CM?
Hilltopper replied to Hilltopper's topic in Combat Mission Archive #3 (2001)
Actually I would love to see all converted to the CM model. For our Finn friends, even a Napoleanic campaign would be very enriching as well. Someone suggested a Pacific WW2 version that would be something to live for! I would even go for a WW1 version as it would be a good test to "bust through" trenches. Carrier and surface vessel combat would be great too. Geez, I wish I had stock in these guys...the possibilities are endless! -
I know some of you all out there are close to the vest with the Battle Front group and was just wondering has there ever been a consideration of adapting CM to a Civil War version (or as my great grand pappy said "War between the Americans and Yankees) and/or a WW2 naval combat version? Didn't know if this had ever been discussed before, but curious.

Can't use a .50 cal or 20mm vulcan as anti-personnel?? Which country came up with that one? The one whose main weapons are rock? Geez, we don't want to kill the enemy too much, we just want to kill them a little bit.

Can infantry be "crunched"?
Hilltopper replied to Hilltopper's topic in Combat Mission Archive #3 (2001)
I read somewhere that the Russians experimented with training dogs with magnetic mines attached to them. The idea, of course, was to have the dog run under the German tank and blow itself and the tank up. I think the Russians had a problem with the dogs running for Russian tanks and thus ended the program. I wish I could remember the name of the book...I think it was something like "Strange facts about WW2" or something along that line. ------------------ -
Is there a place everyone hangs out to play "real time" and on line besides PBEM? Just wondering.....thanx ------------------

Combat Missions - Reality TV
Hilltopper replied to Wilhammer's topic in Combat Mission Archive #3 (2001)
I find this particularly pathetic. I never watched any of the survival programs because this had nothing to do with survival. Maybe survival of tv/marketing ratings, but that's about it. There's a big world of difference in this tv show and playing a game of CM. First, we are doing it for our own intellectual stimulation, not for money. Second, we are not playing war games before a tv "crowd". Only for our own enjoyment. Third, we are not making money playing these games whereas those producing this tv show are. Fourth, you'll never hear us complain about the first amendment of "free speech". Because if the heat is too hot on this tv program, you can bet this is what Fox will moan..."it's free speech". It has nothing to do with free speech, just a free for all for cash! Free speech basically is the ability to say "the King is a jerk" and not worrying about getting lynched for it. Now I want to make it clear that I think capitalism is great, but I'm afraid we're are going to see even worse trash than this since there's too many other distractions competing for attention. What would you expect with over 100 cable channels? It's truly a pathetic age we are entering. I'll get off my soap box now.... ------------------ -
Can infantry be "crunched"?
Hilltopper replied to Hilltopper's topic in Combat Mission Archive #3 (2001)
Ok, thanks... If you've ever seen that German movie "Stalingrad", it has a T-34 spinning around on a couple of hapless Deutsh soldats in a fox hole. That's what made me think about it... ------------------ -
I've been meaning to ask this question, but now just getting around to it. If you run a tank over an enemy infantry position, will the infantry unit take casulties? I've never seen this happen but didn't know if anyone else had. Just curious... ------------------

I forgot to mention he was in mech inf. ------------------

My father in law said they used them some in Europe. But I never asked him if it was a Croc. Pacific theater appears the most used.

Just wondering if anyone has heard about whent the east front version would be ready? Anyone heard anything about this new movie coming up on the sniper duel guys in Stalingrad? Hope it's historically accurate, but doubt it. ------------------ CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS!!!
