  1. The question of accuracy came up also. I belive Panzer Elite uses true velocity models. Also penetration is handled by how much kinetic energie is remaining, so for instand you get a penetration in the rear of your tank, next is the engine, it absorbes a bit...then if energie left..it may go though your radiator, your gearbox..or whatever else is in the way. Also the actual components for each tank are placed according to the real tank. So if you know that this tank was easy to kill if you hit it in this perticular spot because weak armor on gastank or ammo storage, you could duplicate the same on the model. Tanks overheaded....got stuck, even tipped over in this game. So to answer the question placed earlier, yes, Panzer Elite is very realistic in the combat results. Andreas
  2. Yes I have played it, but was not to impressed with the general game play. I like Panzer Elite much better. The play seemd more real. Panzer Elite has some problems also, but the can be managed and the game overall seems more real. Andreas
  3. Yes, Treetop burst do happen, also you can tell by the graphic displayed when they happen. As to you opening a new thread, its ok. Not everybody is a forum wizard as Sean, and the forum is here to allow this type of questions whenever they come up. So if you want to ask the next one, please just post it. Dont be afraid of the mean Sean, grin. Andreas
  4. German Ubermenschen have longer arms, they will reach the MG even while sitting down in the Half Track. Seriusly, possible bug, or they are considering that the German Halftrak version has a Gunshield mounted often with the MG. Not sure how wide spread this version was tho.
  5. They have distinct differences, even betwhen countrys. But in general a tank is a for its class heavy armored turreted vehicle with a main gun that is designed to fire a round that should defeat a equal class armored vehicle. Assault Guns are ussuly non turreted armored vehicles that utilize larger caliper, less accurate guns that are suited more for quick infantry and bunker busting support Selfpropelled Artillery is a armored vehicle that mounts a artillery barrel desigend to fire in a higher arc to allow depolyment of artillery. Mainle to keep up with the rapid moving tank and infantry forces A Tank Destroyer is generaly a special vehicle that has had some comprimices in production such as skipping the turret, or reducing armor or forgetting the armor on the turret top all together to allow cheeper production. It is generly mounted with a capable anti tank type gun. Some of these types blend a bit together and some people would and will argue that this or that vehicle fits in two categories. Assault Guns and Tank Destroyers can look very similar, and are really only seperated by the type of gun they mount. If the gun is a larger shorter barrel then it is considered a assault gun, if the barrel is longer and allowes firing of high velocity rounds then it is considered a Tank Destroyer. Andreas
  6. Sorry if I was not totaly clear. I stated depending the oddity we talking about. For instance the fact that mortars seem to be very accurate tank killers. Yes i understand that hitting the top armor will most likley cause a knock out on many tanks, but the actual part of hitting the tank, at times while moving with a mortar is happening to often. I have not checked these results since the patch, but before the results on mortars was a bit ..hmm...to frequent. Then again I have never fired a mortar before, and maybe they are as accurate as the game displayes them, hitting at 500 meters on the first shot a moving target dead on. (again, this may be fixed, have not tested it again) The actual fire result on the Tiger not being able to knock out a Sherman at 150 meter range does not happen 30% of the time...odds are much lower. Sorry for the miscomminication. Andreas
  7. Hiya all, just wondering if there is a CM2 WebPage yet. Seems like there is always talk of it, but no actual written information or screenshots of it. Could you guys at Battlefront feed us some screenshots of the new tanks and units. Give us some Idea on what the status is on it. Kinda like a weekly update. Just feed us something on a webpage. I for one would probl check this page most every day for news. Also good job on the direct connect patch. Played a few games with it now and had a hell of a good time. Found the time restriction not to bad, and if I did run into trouble with the time, I just asked the opponent to pause the timer. Most gamers will not have a problem with that. Thanks again for keeping the product supported long after the release. Wish more Game Companies took that route. Andreas
  8. Maximus, just think of a little storie with it. Otto, the guy in charge of servicing the tank, he looked a bit to deep into the beer barrel the night before. He adjusted the optics a bit to low. Now Fritz, our gunner in that unlucky Tiger also was parting with Otto, and did not relize this, having a major hangover and a belly full of Scheinzhaxen. So he continiued to pound those poor tracks. Works for me to deal with a series of rather unusual situations to put some humor in it. Andreas
  9. Arent we pulling at straws now. I wish the odd occurences where only 1 % verus 99 % . But i think its more like 10 to 30 percent, pending on the oddity we talking about. But as I said before, live with it. There is only so much we can expect with current programing power from these guys. The game is still great, even if there are a few quirks. Andreas
  10. We all know that some of the combat results we witness in games just seem to conterdict everything we have read in books and reports. I have learned to live with mortars being better tank killers then AT guns, that Tanks like to do the turret shuffel against infantry when there is a nasty enemy tank dodging in and out of the corner, when two or three 88 guns in some situations fire 10 to 15 rounds at one sherman, and the bugger survives and manages to take them all out. In general the game keeps the spirit of the history, but sometimes it just does not. All i can say is, such is live, such is the game. I still love this game, even given these quirks (and i am sure sombody will reply with pages and pages of scientific calculations why on a tuesday and with rainy weather the 88 could not possibly penetrate a sherman at range 1)but i will continiue playing it, since it is still overall the best simualation for this period out there. Andreas
  11. Sounds like National quality can be very easy modled with the troop quality setting in scenerios. Figure if you wanted to play against italians, make them green. This way they will act as italians do. Or if they happen to be commanded by rommel, you can make them vets, they tended to fight better with german officers leading them. Same goes for volksstorm versus Waffen SS Grenadiers, make the volks storm green or regular and the Waffen SS Elite or Fanatical. This would give you a the scenerio with national flavor.
  12. Thanks for all the replies, Matt is checking into it to see what happend. Am sure I will have it soon.
  13. Was just wondering if CM2 or CM3 would be released before the copy of CM i ordered showes up on my door steps. I ordered and got confirmation on 9/17/2000 and there is still no sign of the game. I do understand that Battlefront is using the Mail order only to keep cost down, but at times like this I have to consider picking up the next close combat game. I figure a little bird in the hand is better then a fat turkey that has not shown up for 1 month now. Sorry about the cynical post, but I am a bit frustrated at this time. I wanted to play this game very much, but waiting so long for the game takes a bit of the fun out of it too. Pout Pout
  14. I hope I get similar service, i ordered mine about 1 month ago, but was on a business trip for 3 weeks in europe. (live in usa florida) and called my wive each day, nothing, i just emailed them friday to get a status on this.
  15. Not going to reply for 3 weeks now. Have a business trip in germany and france. Looking forward to catching up on the forum when i get back.
  16. Well, true, but also very accurate. The challenge lies in keeping your formations combat effective longer, not getting better. something different.
  17. The STuG's do seem a bit weak. I have on several occations placed them all on the left map edge, and fast run them up to the woods. Then deployed them all close to each other facint to the east with nice LOS to the locations the american tanks should show up. Most times i will end up with 3 dead StuG's and only get one of the american tanks. Part of the problem is that the stugs take time to blast the infantry, even if they are far far away. The command to set infantry engagment ranges or priorities is needed, but i think that is allready talked about in another thread. It makes no sense that a tanker would switch to HE and fire at a single man left over from a MG squad 500 meters away if he saw and fire the round before at a Sherman more to the left that duck behind the woods. But like i said, i belive that there is allready some coding in progress to improve this.
  18. I understand that units where not transfered betwhen theaters. I dont want this. But units did fight within the same theater several operations before the unit itself become battle unworthy. I figure there should be enough variety in maps even withing a 100 KM area to create several linked Operations. This would be realistic. I just thought the simulation of a full strength fighting unit with all its shiny new tanks and uniforms, to the point of the unit collapsing becuase of attrition and combat fatigue of the average soldier would be fun to watch. People would fight and possibly retreat much sooner, in fear of destroying the fighting capability of the overall formation. Plus in the current one operation, if you had Tigers, well...thats what you had, in a ongoing link of operations within a reasonable distance the Tigers could have been replaced with lower quality and type units, because of limited resources avalible. I understand that there may be a link to this allready, I just started about a week agon reading this forum.
  19. True True, but the germans did have lots of choices. I am sure the Battalion Comander would have chosen SMG units to cover the woods or town, while the mostly Carbine armed troops would have been assigned to locations where their longer range fire was better utilized. The fact is that germans had a flare for designing specilized units for almost every task, no matter if it was infantry, Armor, or Aircraft. No other country has as many modified vehicles and infantry types as the germans. This was a bit of a handycap also, because of the large amount of different troop and armor types they did never manage to build any one in large enough numbers.
  20. I know that current operations are the way closest thing to having a campain in CM. I would like to see a more extensive campain system. Example. Start the player out with a Regiment of Equipment. Let him choose the Different Battalions for this Regiment. Then put the player in a series of operations, with replacements for the unit based on historical procentages. Then lets see how many operations the player can go through without losing complete combat worthiness. This would simulate in the later Operations the attrition. You may have had a Puma or two, but because you lost them in the start, you got nothing or more avalible units to do the recon. Not sure what kind of coding it would require, but units would increase in quality from operation to operation, so you would have in later operttions a few survivors, that are vets, but also a large number of greens as replacments. Your original Heavy Tank Company may have been brought down to 30% and consist now of a partial Heavy Platoon and some Medium Tanks, Artillery would be somewhat abstract, as replacing the FO is generaly pretty easy, but the quality of the FO would drop. Also most of the motorized units from the Start would be walking or riding pigy back on tanks into battle in later scenarios. I think this would make for a interesting game. What do you all think.
  21. I think that the dead bodies during the battle may add to much information to the players and proccessing to the computer. But i would not mind to have the computer mark the locations for the dead and in the aftermath Map view have them displayed. This way you could truly judge what locations on the map where dangerous, where did that SMG team lose all its man, and such. But only in the after action Map view. This would also allow some great screenshots to be taken. Without giving vital information or slowing the computer down during the actual play.
  22. I like both. CC is more for a quick beer and preztel game at this point, where CM is when i have lots of time to think about every move i make. The nice thing about CC is that you can find and play human oponents pretty much whenever you desire, where with CM you have to play PbEM at this time. It is nice to do PbEM when you wish to spread it out. But some sundays i fell like spending every single moment on a game, and the pauses are somewhat distracting. I think this will be improved once the Multyplayer part of the game is implemented. Other then that, both games are good, for what they are designed for. And lets not forget, CC has been trying to simulate small unit action for some time now, and I personaly have had many hours of fun playing time with this game.
  23. Trenches where used in the eastern front mostly by the Ruskis. The germans did use limited trenches throuout the war for fire bases. The pracis of placing a continiues network of trenches across 100th of KM was abondend after WW1 because of the armors ability to croos this trenches and get into the real echolon areas. Trenches where practical to secure specific locations and landmarks only, and then ussuly those trenches where build up quit extensive. another example of limited trenches is the beaches of normandy. The germans had a extensive trench, bunker network established.
  24. I agree with non-gamey. If you purchased based on historical numbers. I have no problem with 2 to 4 Flaks of whatever caliper being used for ground defense. How you set them up on the map is up to you. If you would purchase like 10 or 20 of them, then i would have to say, this is a bit gamey. I rather see somebody using 4 flak, then another damn puma. 20mm Flak was plentyfull and most all half way decent german orginazations had some of them because of the constand aircraft threads. Am sure they used them in many roles.
