Pillar I am well aware of the folly of subscribing to one doctrine or another based on this or any other "game". Especially in the context of only one battle. I am also aware that given the same situation, forces, doctrine and even the same map, successive battles would probably have vastly different outcomes. I was only trying to play the diplomat(by suggesting you fight a battle ) by offering an alternative to the back and forth that was obviously going nowhere. I also must confess to trying to satisfying my own curiosity as to the approach and execution of the battle by two learned commanders. Might I make a friendly suggestion here? One that would make EVERYONE happy. I'm not the first to suggest this (cant remember who was first) but I think it bears repeating. both Pillar and ScoutPL need to stop discussing the issue and settle it on the 3D field of honor. You both obviosly know a bit about the subject matter But have differing philosophy's. So play each other and see who's philosophy works better. And post a running commentary of the battle here. (giving nothing away that the enemy might use of course) I for one would be very interested in seeing how this "clash of titons" would play out. I also think that it would lower the level of animosity here. You two might also get a new found respect for one another.(some of my best friends are people who I started out as not being on friendly terms with) Just a suggestion and as Mr. Buffer would put it..... LETS GET READY TO RUMBLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLE!

I hear alot of people saying that in CM, the recon is assumed to allready have taken place therfore you dont need to do it. Actually there is a situation where good recon is called for. Operations. Especially the first battle of a big one(battalion). I just played one like that and the gist of the briefing was "you have just arrived in the area. the enemy is that way. go get em." The map was big and the time was short (15 turns) I had to move my battalion fast. let me tell you in that situation i was not going to move my force that fast in that terrain (forest and hills) without haveing at least an idea of what was in front of me. Yes my scout cars fired when they found the enemy but that was ok cuz they caused alot of disruption to the enemy. Well i guess my whole point is that sometimes recon is needed and SOMETIMES its ok if they fire on the enemy they just found. Just my 2 cents.

The last time i checked, the USMC's official designation for there sharpshooter's was.... Scout/Sniper. Notice that the Scout part came first? Thats what sharpshooters are there for, Intelligence gathering with the added ability to terrorize the enemy's personell with harrassing fire.

Hmmmm.....in a recent pbem i had a sniper that ingaged a marderII at less then 30m. Hi Rum I played Air Warrior for the last few years. Recently discovered warbirds and could never bring myself to ever play Air Warrior again. I was getting ready to open my Warbirds account when my Combat Misssion CD arrived. Well needless to say I never opened my account. I still fly offline sometimes when im waiting for the pbem file just to stay current and wouldnt mind some head to head now and then. Thinks Turret Ring. I was trying to recomend that movie to a friend the other day but didnt know the title. my copy is missing the first minute or two and only knew that is was "mopic" something or other. Great movie.

Gotta say Saving Private Ryan is my fav movie of any kind period. I left the movie theater shaking and in a cold sweat. (shell shock?) Das Boot would be second. Midway would have to be my third cuz the day after a saw it i went out and bought the game and started my war gaming career.

I just realised it has been 23 years ago that i purchased "Midway". OH NO! i can remember something that happened 23 years ago. AAAAAAARG! I also remember the days of playing "Vietnam. 1965-1975" with the maps masking taped to the wall high enough so my 2 year old son couldnt reach it and playing from a step ladder. AW the good (bad) old days

There i was, Happily flying my P-51 over war torn Europe, Gleefully picking off the odd FW or BF when an odd website caught my eye. it contained the demo of a game called "Combat Mission. Beyond Overlord". Never much of a ground pounder, i thought i would give it a try just to see. 1 week later my copy of the full game arrived. (yes, it only took a week to get here)and now my flying career is in total ruin. a once aspiring mustang ace is now a dedicated Trackhead. I have spent 1000's of dollers (ok 10's of doller) and 100's of flight hours (litterally) buying joysticks and what not and perfecting my technique in my P-51. Now i'd rather drive a sherman thru the mud. I havent touched my joystick in days (and niether has the wife :-0 ) and my kid even runs around saying "ok sarge" and "Oh my leg". Thanks BTS for creating such and awsome simulation. It has destroyed my (virtual) flying career.
