  1. Does anyone know something about the optics of AT guns? They surely did have something like that, I guess, but I never read anything about them. For the german 50mm, 75mm and 88mm, were these the same optics used in the PzKpfw? Where they in any way different? It is often said that the german panzers got those excellent Zeiss optics and that they were quite superior to those used by the allies. I know that this is not modelled in CM but it would give axis AT guns (IF they HAD those optics...) a big advantage when engaging tanks, since AT vs tank engagements are fast and bloody... Did Flak guns like the 88s had two different optics, one for air and one for ground targets? Lots of questions, hope somebody can help. ------------------ Klotzen, nicht kleckern! 2. Good point, exactly what I thought when reading the manual the first time. I hope that for CM2 the manual will be more useful. Not that it was bad, but after playing the demo and finally getting the full game there was VERY little I learned that I didn't knew before... ------------------ Klotzen, nicht kleckern!
  3. IMHO since both lack the blast radius for "killing" troops, I only use them to suppress the enemy. Since you get much more 81mm ammo than 75mm I usually take the 81mm for suppressing and something "heavier" for killing. If you're low on points (1000 less) The 75mm is a good compromise, if you use them correctly. Hope that helps you in any way... And as you mentioned correctly, 81mm is great for taking out guns and to force tanks to button up if you don't have onboard mortars. ------------------ Klotzen, nicht kleckern!
  4. Just played a QB against the AI. I sneaked a bazooka team into a small house and yes, there was a Hetzer rumbling along! Distance: 87 m, one shot, one kill, great! Enemy crew leaves the doomed tank and makes it to a nearby house. But hey, what's happening??! Due to the blast of the zook the house in which my brave men are starts burning!! In panic they run out of the house, across the street and into the next house! Guess whom they met... Yes, the crew of the panzer they just nailed... Both units staring at each other, distance 3 m... Noone shoots... A kingdom for THAT dialogue!! One of the many reasons I LOVE this game! ------------------ Klotzen, nicht kleckern!
  5. IMHO it depends on your style of play and your preferences if you like QBs or scenarios and how bif they should be. Problem with scenarios is that if you already played it, there's not much suprise about objectives and the enemy units and if you know it already and your opponent does not, you've got an (unfair) advantage. It's the same with the question of "how many points". Just try out some different sizes until you find one that suits your gaming habits. I like to play battles 1000-2000 points because with that you can choose a nice combined arms force with lots of support weapons. Many people like small battles with 500-1000 points, great if you don't want to spend too much time for a game. I wouln'd recommend playing a large battle (2000+) until you're familiar with the game. It's a lot of work to command entire battaillons... ------------------ Klotzen, nicht kleckern!

  7. If they've got a nice 76mm and some tungsten rounds in their Rucksack I'm sure it will! ------------------ Klotzen, nicht kleckern!
  8. Ah, Tom, do I get you right? The experience of your units doesn't matter much, since the other guy then gets more "cheap" troops?? No big deal when your green Sherman crews trade shots with elite Tigers and Panthers... ------------------ Klotzen, nicht kleckern! [This message has been edited by ParaBellum (edited 03-10-2001).]
  9. The same thing that prevents you from giving yourself a 200% bonus... The setup should be discussed BEFORE playing TCP/IP or pbem games in order to maintain peace... ------------------ Klotzen, nicht kleckern!
  10. WOW! These pics look GRRREAT! Especially the dawn/dusk version. Can I download them somewhere? Can you send them to me? Can I have them now? Where are they? Oh God, pleeeeeze.... ------------------ Klotzen, nicht kleckern!

  12. Hehe, thx... But with those SMG squads just one or two casualties will result in a 2:1 advantage (in men, not firepower) to an enemy rifle squad... ------------------ Klotzen, nicht kleckern!
  13. I don't like the VG SMG squads too much. The main problem IMHO is that when you get hit and just loose 2 men their ability to fight against the larger enemy squads is greatly reduced. I beat a lot of SMG squads with a combination of mortar fire and infantry attacks. When you weaken them before the close assault you've already half won... I'd rather buy Panzergrenadiere. They're good at close range and those 2 LMGs gives them great long range firepower! ------------------ Klotzen, nicht kleckern!
  14. After recieving my basic training in the Bundeswehr here in Germany I was trained as a sharpshooter/sniper. In my Jägerbattaillon (light infantry) there were 2 snipers/sharpshooters in every platoon. We were trained more to a "sharpshooter" role, e.g. we would stay with our platoon most of the time and try to engage high priority targets (TCs, officers,...). But we also got some training on how to work independently, as a two-men team. During a training session at Hammelburg we met some US snipers, and those guys surely played in a different league... They had (nearly) complete freedeom of what to do, no platoon to which they were assigned, just to "hunt" their opponents. I think in WWII there were a lot of guys with a telescope on their rifle but that surely didn't make them snipers. IMHO only the USSR used "snipers" in an important role during WWII. I've never read accounts of US, british, french or russian troops on how they suffered heavy on enemy snipers, but I read a lot of german units suffering from losses due to russian snipers. ------------------ Klotzen, nicht kleckern!

  16. I agree with Martin Cracauer. The first 60 minutes are great, showing the street fighting in Stalingrad and the enormous stress put on the soldiers. It isn't a "typical" war movie with the "Schwerpunkt" set on the fighting scenes but to show how men will act under the horrors of war. IMHO more a "full metal jacket" than a "saving prv. Ryan". Ah, and the T 34 tank attack with german infantry close assaulting are really well done, very interesting for CM2! (Just to mention CM, so that Madmatt doesn't lock up this thread too soon... ) If you're interested in the Stalingrad fighting, I would recommend it. ------------------ Klotzen, nicht kleckern!

  18. A few weeks ago there was the "Berlinale", a great film festival in Berlin. The first movie to be shown was "Enemy at the gates". The critics were very bad... They used the word "embarrassing"... ------------------ Klotzen, nicht kleckern!
  19. no, that's not gamey... next time just buy some 14" spotters and a jeep... ------------------ Klotzen, nicht kleckern! [This message has been edited by ParaBellum (edited 03-06-2001).]
  20. That reminds me of the guy who called me "cheater" when playing Counterstrike after me killing him in the same spot for the 5th time... When I asked hem why, he told me that he made a complete black modell and so I SHOULD not be able to see him in a dark corner... After he said that, he was shot by his own teammates... ------------------ Klotzen, nicht kleckern!

  23. When playing CM I often check the position of vehicles/guns. It´s easy, just click on the unit and press "Tab". But this gives you only the view "from behind" the unit towards the enemy. I want to look at the unit from "the front", so I have to move in front of the unit and turn the whole view around 180 degrees. Perhaps (in CM2) there could be a command (shift-Tab ?) that switches to a "from the front perspective" view? I pray that that`s not already implemented and I just never found out ... ------------------ Klotzen, nicht kleckern!
  24. As you point out, what you see on the screen is only a representation of the model used to calculate the action. It doesn't matter if there is a "blank spot" in a woods area, since CM treats the whole area as "woods". The position of the "tree graphics" have no impact on cover or LOS, they're there just to show you that this certain area is supposed to represent "woods". Hope that helps. ------------------ Klotzen, nicht kleckern!
  25. Nice work, Tiger! Now they DO look dangerous... ------------------ Klotzen, nicht kleckern!
