1. Hi Chaps,

A quick thanks for being let into the Tourney. smile.gif

I feel bad that not all can play and am sorry that all can not play. :(

Hello Group two I look forward to some good fights and I hope I will prove good enough to give challenging and fun games.

An e-mail will be on the way tonight regards who I am and how I play (regards "Gamey") etc...

I will now start researching my opponents. So if you know anything of :-

"Kingfish" "Tom" "Stix" "John Kettler" "von Lucke" "Peter Svensson" "Georges"

Then any hints or tips gratefully received. ;)

I look forward to playing some handcrafted scenarios from the Master Wild Bill. (This is the real reason why I forced myself to feel like a school boy sitting an exam and praying that I had done enough.)

Win or Lose I have won already as I am being allowed to play and this will be fun... :D

    Thanks chaps..

    Regards H

  2. Hi chaps I posted the message below on the Opponents board and I have just realised there is no site hosting this Operation.

Can anyone point me in the direction where it is located, or e-mail me a copy?

    Many thanks

    H

"I see that an Operation called Sealion has been posted and reviewed at the Scenario Depot.

Ever since playing Sealion SPI Boardgame I have wanted more. Just say Sealion to me and I dream of fighting them on the beaches etc.... Boyhod battles with Airfix Shermans and Tiger tanks on LCT's flood back, with boxes for houses and cotton wool smoke.

I would love to play blind this Operation via PBEM and at times TCP / IP. So that I may re live my childhood.

I am fairly experienced T house player and will play either side.

If your interested drop me a line and tell me how often you will send files. With my American cousins I manage one in the morning and one in the evening.

I would prefer a European as often I manage multiple files a night, depending on the G/F and if I am in her good books. (Or want to be in her good books.... )

    Cheers

I have found the second floor to be the best place to defend a building from.

Seems that you get a bonus for the FP factor. I guess it is easier to drop grenades on people than it is to throw them up stairs and have them bounce back towards you.

In the case of position at the back when the enemy are in the building at the front (but not too far forward) when you have total control and want to stop the run in.

Once the enemy are in the building get to the back walls asap as this will help reduce suppression from the supporting enemy units outside the building and allows you to concentrate on interior defense.

As for attacking a building only do this if the defenders are suppressed and you have enough men to ge in there and engage in HTH combat.

Too often I have entered buildings and been wiped out because I did not suppress the enemy within. I have not tried the run and sneak in option and would be interested to hear others views on this. I tend to use the run and stop just inside. Or if I know where the enemy is a Run and then move towards the enemy.

A final tip is if the building comes under DF from a tank with a decnt gun. I.e. Stuh, Priest. Take the remaining men with a retreat command out of the building ASAP. You might have a few men to fight another day if you are lucky. Always choose buildings with a rear exit if you want your men to have a chance to survie.

So ensure that there are no padlocks on those fire escapes...

  4. A difficult unit to use (I include Zooks and Piats) on defense.

You have summed the various approaches well and the down fall for them.

The units are only really effective at less than 100 meters and some would say a lot less than that.

They really are a gamble and the only way in a city fight is to try and find locations where the armour has to be close to provide support for the foot sloggers. (Obvious statement. ;) )

A good example of this is if you place the foot sloggers in rubble infront of a building. If the enemy armour has to get close to help support an attack on them and you have a AT team in a building behind them then you stand some chance of success.

The down side to all urban fighting is that the Zooka and Zhrck are liable to set fire to the building and if not in a building can be taken out fairly quickly.

In the end it is a gamble. All I would say is don't put them out in front of your own Inf screen as they are dead meat for sure.

And only operate on the flanks alone if you want to be "gamey" and know that (by counting points) that the opponent has nothing there to defend against a sneak attack. Otherwise keep them behind the Inf and bring them close when you know where your targets are.

Not much help I guess. :(

  5. Hi chaps the results are in on the third game.

Allied Attacker lost 68 men with 18 KIA and 3 vehicles knocked out.

The Germans lost 76 men with 24 KIA. 9 Men surrendered and all three guns were lost.

Even with such a resounding defeat it was only a minor victory at 56 Pts Allied 44 German.

I think your previous suggestion to change it will make it more balanced for human play. And as long as it is noted for human play then people can not complain. Not that anyone ever complains on this BB.

    ;)

    H

P.s. I have moved onto Trun and Miltary Intelligence. BTW with Miltary Intelligence I am the Allied commander and the designer of the game is truely evil...

So, how much of a threat does this mine pose? Can it be disarmed or safely by passed?

Well as a threat it "can" (not will) disable every vehicle that passes over it.

I am not sure that it will as I think it is modelled so that there is a chance of disablement.

As for disarming I think the only way is engineers. I don't think it will become disabled by running "X" number of vehicles over it. Or by firing HE at it.

If it is light woods either side or any other approach I would use that. I am not sure what the percentage chance of a disablement is as I have never done any tests and the designers are coy about that information.

  7. Getting inside your opponents head is something everyone tries but more often than not you put your own spin on the actions of the opposing player. Whose actual thought process is no where near your imagined thoughts for that person.

    ;)

In a defensive game an attack like that against a potential force of 5 Shermans and two platoons could have cost you the game.

As it was it helped you win the game. The interesting thing was that the second game was within a point of being the same results as the first game.

The first game was played in a totally different style.

It will be interesting to see the points difference on this last game. My men have totally collasped and the famed FJ have barely dented you this time.

It certainly makes a difference with those Shermans getting through. (Well who would of guess that ;) ...)

    Anyway back to work....

    :(

The FJ troops are split squads (most anyhow) now unless the Human player puts them close together in the set up to combine them on the second round, those units falter quite fast.

In light of this I think I would leave the troops as they are but increase the fanatizism of the US forces to "Regular or better +25%". If you want to test that out, give it a wack. Just open up my mission in the scenario editor and add the bonus.

I'm still in the game with Berli and he thought it was a cake walk for the Americans, I'm the FJ so still waiting, he is worried? wondering where my troops are... unlucky for him I am not telling till the last momment when I see the beedy eyes of his troops. (lets see if his USMC traning sunk in his widdle head)

:D Oh god I'm not gonna hear the end of it if he wins. Common lucky dice daddy needs a new Motorcycle!

    Hi,

To add to your comment about the split squads. I did and so did Rett combine them. Against the Yanks in the Open without Tank support they are mincemeat and soon break.

The third game Rett did the attack with the 5 down the road and baring some lucky break he will win with this approach. It has worked due to poor AT gun position and luck. It could have gone very nasty for him.

He was only brave enough to do that once we had played the game twice. When playing blind you are so much more cautious when you don't know what you are up against.

In my second game against Rett he realised that I had gone for a flank attack with a single Sherman on the other flank to act as decoy. So he swamped that Sherman with his defenders there and turned my flank.

He was only condfident in doing that because he knew what forces I had.

This game is best blind (IMO) and needs to be balanced and by increasing the Yanks Morale. That might well do the trick.

Let us know how your games go and if anyone plays the game blind I would love to know how it went.

    Cheers

We have yet to finish the third game and I can see Rett beating me on that game.

He has only achieved this by taking a big risk and storming all his forces down the main road.

My AT guns have taken 3 tanks for the loss of two and he seems to have enough infantry left to swing it his way. Although this is not certain.

In our first two games we both split our forces and were defeated convincingly by the FJ.

I really do think the FJ need down grading as the American Inf can not go toe to toe with them and are soon cut down.

Unless you have a player who stumbles across the "Mad Charge" approach then I don't think it is winnable by the Allied player. And even with this approach it is a big gamble, which for Rett has maybe paid off, but for others maybe not.

Anyway, still it was fun and it brought back boyhood memories of Airfix Shermans and small table top skirmishes. The map certainly captures the spirit of the region.

I would recommend it to anyone for a fun game. Just don't be too upset when you see all your tanks burning... (those graphics are better than cotton wool fire... ;))

    Cheers H

P.s. Just need to find someone to play those other two blind....

One reason--aside from laziness-- I haven't yet ventured into the PBEM/QB world is that it all seems to come down to force selection. If you guess right, you've got a force your opponent isn't equipped to counteract. If you guess wrong, you lose because your opponent has figured out a force that you can't deal with. I've been a little reluctant to climb into that whole nest of issues. Plus, I'm into history and prefer to play with and against forces similar to those that actually existed in WWII. I don't mind that other people approach things differently, of course. Just my preference.

Does anyone out there like to play pre-existing scenarios PBEM? Maybe I should give that a try.

    Hi,

I am into the Ladder thang with T house and I agree, the force pick stage can be where you lose the battle.

I still do the "cherry pick" routine and make use of the Set-ups used for the last tournament with the bidding process. I would recommend that to people who want to try and get a balanced game. Some thought has gone into those Tourney games and the bidding process helps. Here is the link :-

    http://tournamenthouse.com/tourney/CM/rounds.htm

However, more and more I use scenarios and just lately started playing some OPs. I have not played many against the AI as I prefer humans and playing the games blind.

The best games so far have been the scenarios against someone blind. They give you a "realistic situation" where you have to work with what the scenario designer has given you. ;)

Mind you saying that I have just got into two Ops. TF Butler with Lars and Herrlisheim - Cut Off with Murray. Both of those are testing me in new directions. The TF Butler map is huge and looks like it is going to be fun.

No cherry picking and a whole lot of fun if you can trust your opponent not to sneak a preview. ;) (Which so far I have been blessed with my great opponents.)

The Byte size games at Der Kessel are a great idea, although the one I played yesterday with Rett (Bocage to St Lo) seemed a bit biased to the Germans. Again the guys have put thought into trying to make an entertaining map with pre-selected forces.

If you want a PBEM I have slots free and will play a pre made game blind.

  11. Hi Guys,

Thanks for the Battles did the St Lo job 3 times with Rett.

1st two Allies were creamed. The last time we are still playing but looks like it will be a draw or a loss to the Germans.

I would recommend that this is evened up slightly for the Allies.

It seems with the time limit and force selection that unless the Allied player takes a certain approach there is no hope.

This is of course if the German player plays / deploys moderately well.

In our 1st two attempts it was as follows:-

    Allied German

    KIA 73(23) / 91(29) 23(6) / 47(11)

    3V / 5V 1G / 1G

    Men OK

    41 / 22 74 / 50

    Score

    22 / 23 78 / 77

I think for "normal" players this game is un balanced in favour of the Germans.

I would suggest down grading the German Inf or reduce the other AT assets.

The map was fine and we both enjoyed it. Even though it was painful as Allied.

The third game is the exception and is only working out differently as we now know what each other have and have gamed it as so.

    Just some feed back.

A great concept and I need to find someone to play the other two with.

    ;)

P.s. Any one want to send me a set up I will take it on. Or arrange a night (UK) time to play TCP/ IP.

  12. Hi,

For any of you who made it to Kirby Hall and saw the Tiger Tank in action I am sure you will agree it was a great sight.

Yeah sure it was a mock up based on a T55 Chassi, but the lines looked good and it certainly drew a crowd.

If I had a digi camera I would post photos of the battle with the Tiger and Germ 1/2 track taking on two 25pdrs and a M36 TD and several US 1/2 tracks. It was fun to watch (even if a tad unrealistic (or should I say Gamey)) ;)

If any of the guys who were running the show or dying in the rain read this; you did a good job and I had a fun day out with my partner and god children.

For those who have no idea what I am talking about come to Kirby Hall in Northamptonshire UK next year for the largest Living History event from Romans to D - Day.

    Cheers

You guys need to include as much info as possible, to fine tune the search. The more info you enter the less time it will take.

It will eventually bring up the info you are searching for, but will take a long long time (possibly hours), if you only search for a single word.

You have to remember if you don't fine tune your search, the search engine will have to go through more than 20,000 threads. I think even alot more than that if I am not mistaken. I believe there are alot of posts from the old board.

I used it last night and the night before with no troubles.

    Hope this helps

    Thxs for that Shatter. smile.gif

I think my search was pretty refined and I only selected the last 30 days and just looking for the word "spotting" in the title.

It still came up with connection timed out.

Now is there a way with IE5 to increase the "time out" time?

Maybe that is what is going wrong?

    H

  14. Hi folks

Is it me or is this search engine a bit rusty?

I have seen other people post saying it failed and it has failed to deliver for me on numerous occasions. I am getting quite frustrated now, hence the post.

Am I doing something wrong? :(

Any advice or knowledge that might help me. smile.gif

I was trying to confirm my knowledge (or lack of it) on Relative and Absolute spotting. ;) (I wonder why....) ;)

So if anyone has threads with this on I would be very grateful.

    Regards

    H

  15. I would tend to agree with the others. Buy a HMG rather than 3 LMG's.

The only time I would not do this is if I wanted some cheap forward recon on a defense game.

I would buy three LMG's and use them for picket duty. If used well you can use them to mask where you really are and the attacker might be led into thinking your main defense line is way forward and waste some of his arty in taking them out.

I have found that they die way too fast compared to the HMG unit. :(
