  1. Incredible! Doyoudo this for a living? L8r, Em
  2. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Jeff Heidman: You can buy a GeForce 2 MX 32MB video card for less than $100. Right now, depending on your processor, that may be one of the most cost effective upgrades available. Jeff Heidman<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Amen. I bought one of those jewels to pair with my Cel2-566. I overclocked both and can now chew through any scenario with any mod at 1280x1024. Full speed ahead! L8r, Em
  3. "other" Mr. Clark - Heh. It was a long shot. Interesting that you allude to getting rid of the Mr. Clark of AQ2 fame... his page was modeled as a spy's guide to getting rid of enemies. Sniping was especially noteworthy and honorable in Action Quake2. You mention Unreal Tourney. I am still occasionally messing with playing it online and offline. I have a server that runs CTF most of the time. I like to play the Infiltration and Tactical Ops mods on UT too. However, if stranded on a desert isle with only one game...it would be CMBO! RokSS:I must admit that AQ2 consumed me like no other game has. For about 3 months I played it during every free moment I had. I, along with another player (Tequila), started the OFC. I played it regularly for over a year. However, the cheaters and LPBs spoiled it for me. Chupa said: "And since the CM community is much smaller than the community for just about any FPS on the market (well, maybe not Daikatana)," ROFLOL! good one! L8r, [OFC]Emthon
  4. While there are plenty of "Mr. Clarks" in the world, it is odd to see it as a screen name. Are you the one that had a nice page on Action Quake2? If so, just a word of "hello" from an old fan and welcome to CMBO. I enjoyed your page. If not, well, glad you are enjoying CMBO, the best tactical level WW2 sim ever developed! L8r, Em
  5. Hijack- I have the same card. No problems with slowdown. I have read that the 6.35 drivers are not optimal. Check madonion.com to see what they have to say on the boards. I use the 6.31 drivers and get excellent performance. I have set the AGP aperture to 64mb, vsync off D3D, makes sure anti-alias is off. Sometimes it gets set on as default. Make sure and check it. Good luck, Em
  6. Wild Bill- I just played FiF as the Allies. Scenario defaults and no changes. It was one bloody mess when I got through! Total Allied Victory, but there were no smiles on my leader's faces. In fact, several of them would never smile again. I do not have time for an AAR. However, the battle was a mixture of changing fortunes (armor lost, zook teams step up, holding a hill and getting overrun), loss for the overall good (arty called in "wide" to shock as many Axis as possible), and moments of frustration and elation (lose 2 MMG squads to my own arty and last zook team gets their last tank ). I knew I had it in hand when I squeezed them into the heavy woods and rained down 105mm death. Then, any of their ?Infantry units were easy mop up. Great scenario! Em
  7. Where lies the Green man? Either of two places hid, Veteran or earthen Somewhere victory calls Icy death awaits my turn never to be heard Stealth, quiet, panic Like winter's smothering blanket win turns to defeat Battle's hellish din agony thunders the plane twisted forms of pain Smoke curls from the beast sun rising out of the east battle's end, grim grin.
  8. Read many glowing online reviews, CGW ***** review, and then poked around Dejanews. I did not bother d'loading the demo. I sent in my my order and have been in CMBO heaven ever since! I have not enjoyed a game this much in a long time. L8r, Em
  9. Just a bit on the Voodoo cards. I used to be a dyed in the wool Voodoo lover. However, I was quite dissatisfied with my Voodoo3 card and CMBO. I recently got a GeForce-2 MX and really like it. For CMBO it is terrific! It does pretty good on some other games that I play, too. I have the SBLive value and have been very pleased with it. I got a CD burner rather than a DVD drive. It has been very handy to burn disks of data and music. L8r, Em
  10. hiya kip- I cannot overstate how happy I am with the GF-2 MX card. To be able to keep CM running for hours on end, big map, small map, other tasks in background, ESC out of program, load HyperSnap DX, screenshots, and anything else I would have never dreamed about with my Voodoo is just GREAT! Now, I did purchase the OEM version of the Hercules card. It has the slower memory. Some people are not able to overclock it at all. I was able to get a pretty good overclock on mine. YMMV. For another $25 you can get the retail version. It will likely overclock to core 210 and memory 220 mhz. It also looks fabulous. Probably has more to do with running at 1280x1024 than the card or driver differences. I pretty much had to keep the V3 down to 1024x768 or 800x600 to minimize the whiteout problem. L8r, Em
  11. Just download Hypersnap-DX. It will sequentially capture screens and save them to files that are snapX.bmp, where X=consecutive integer numbers. Works like a charm. Freeware version too!
  12. WBW- Reminds me of playing Chance Encounter last night. I was playing the Axis forces. Towards the end of the conflict, mop up. Anyway, I had a platoon leader with his two SMG squads directed to charge from the church over to the Allies hidden in the scattered trees to the left. Well, it was a very brash and stupid move. The Allies at that point had not gotten the word that their butts were getting kicked elsewhere. So, they put down some determined fire that Broke one squad and Pinned the leader. Thankfully, the turn ended. I then set the remaining Alerted squad to fall back and hide. I click, "Go" and watch as they come under fire. There goes the platoon leader, running away from his men. Then, I watch in horror as my remaining healthy squad begins to run toward the Allies. I am thinking, "you idiots, what the heck are you doing!?" They then stop within 10 meters of the main rifle squad and proceed to make mincemeat of them. I guess they were fanatical troops, Green BTW. The next turn, they take out a MMG nest. It was definitely one of those (small-scale) epic moments. L8r, Em
  13. re: Human vs Puter opponents. Yeah, I know that. However, there are some scenarios that the TacAI can really excel in playing. I have played online games for many years and definitely agree with you, the human element is still superior. Unless, you are playing against a newbie (like me ) Ok, played CE as the Axis forces. While not materially harder, it did take me longer to get the Axis Major Victory. Something like 25 turns. (I knew the Allied forces were beat after about 15!) My Stugs did a darn fine job of knocking out 3 Shermies before the last of my Stugs acquiesed. Thankfully, the combination of a strong right-side (Axis view) presence and a hidden left-side presence, drove the remaining two Sherms to the left side. They both bogged down while still on the Allied side of the road. Heh. The 2 Sherms were still pretty lethal and cut off all my attempts to get my infantry from the church to the Allied-side woods. Also, my PzSchrecks had abysmal aim and served only to infuriate the tank commanders and 50 cal gunners. I do give a tip of the helmet to my Arty Spotter. I got him situated on the Axis wooded hill on the right side and managed to lay down some deadly arty on the troops as they were clumped in the scattered trees. It was pretty brutal! In order to get the tanks, I ended up running some infantry from the farmhouse to the closest tank. It was not pretty. They were dodging (and not) 50 cal fire as they came across the wheat field, up the hill, and to the side of the Sherm. Two rifle grenades later from 15 meters and there was only one Sherm. The final Sherm succumbed to a PzSchreck in the side. It was probably the 10th one fired from the church. I must have had 3 or 4 PzS squads try the shot. After that, it was a pretty simple mop up operation. Most of the Allied forces were in a Panic or Broken state. On to the next scenario.... L8r, Em
  14. Sorry if you have already read my similar post concerning my Voodoo3 problems and ultimate resolution (pun intended ). I had an overclocked V3-2k in my Celeron 516 mhz machine. I was having the texture white out problems that everyone else was having with large maps. I decided to give 3dfx two weeks, from the time I started playing CM, to rectify the problem. Well, we still have the problem. About a week ago I got a Hercules GeForce2-MX. Since my wife did not bat an eyelash at that purchase, I decided to go for the Gold... I also ordered a Cel566 with the intention of overclocking the beejeezus out of it. Got everything installed, overclocked the Cel2 to 922 mhz, overclocked the GF2-MX to core 195 and mem 190. As you might guess, CM runs like a friggin dream! I can actually run it at 1600x1200 with only some jerkiness on All or Nothing, when viewing the entire map on view level 3. I go ahead and run it at 1280x1024 because that is a better match for my desktop on my 19" monitor. Of course, it is quite smooth and the display is gorgeous. So, for ~$120, you can get the GF-2 MX and be free of the white texture dropout! If you have been waiting for 3dfx to fix the problem, I would advise against it. If you can afford it, go for a different card. CM is too good a game to spoil by putting up with the texture dropout nonsense! I was doing the "make move, save game, wait for texture drops, quit game, reload game, play move, rinse and repeat". ARgh! My heartfelt $0.02, Em
  15. The search function is a wonderful thing... I just should have used it before I posted my "newbie" post. Heh. I see that playing the Axis, which I innately felt, would have made a more difficult game. Perhaps I will.... Kingfish: Yes, playing against humans is always going to make it tougher! 16. Working my way through the CD, after Chambois, comes Chance Encounter. Um, I presume this one is supposed to be quite easy? I scored an Allied major victory after 18 turns. Wiped out the StugIIIGs after maybe 4 turns. I kept the Shermies moving and x-firing to suppress the Panzerschrecks. I did lose a Sherm late to a gutsy Infantry squad that rifle grenaded (what is the German version for it?) I also managed to find their Arty Spotter before he started to drop rounds on my immobilized Sherm just south of the church. Fighting for the "hill" marker was pretty intense. However, with coordinated suppression from my tanks, some stalwart Veterans storming the hill, and a clean sweep by some Regulars to flank the enemy, the situation was well in hand. By the time the reinforcements arrived, there was not much to mop up. In fact, my last move to pull my "low" ammo platoon back and have the reinforcements take their place, was the Major Victory move... So, I am wondering, what can make this one an ugly battle? L8r, Em
  17. First, it is obvious that Hiram Sedai is one meticulous guy with time on his hands. He dredged up this thread that "died" on 15Jun2000 and restarted it today, 27Sep2000! Lessee, 43, married to a very understanding wife, son and daughter, PhD chemist, work in the oil industry. House, two cars, 3 cats, 1 fish, 2 hamsters,1 frog, and 2 snails. I love computers and computer gaming. I used to play mostly "twitch" first person shooters. Ran the full gamut of Doom/2, Heretic, Hexen, Quake, Quake2, Hexen2, Unreal, Half-Life, Unreal Tourney, and all the various mods along the way. The non-twitch games have been sims and a few "wargames": Age of Kings, Warcraft2, and Panzer General. I like assembling my own computers and am a fervent overclocker. I have put together and babied along: P90 @ 100 mhz, mmx233 @ 262 mhz, three Cel300a @ 464 mhz, Cel366 @ 516 mhz, and my current machine Cel2-566 @ 922 mhz. I maintain a 3 system LAN at home. I am hopelessly addicted to computers and CMBO! L8r, Em
  18. Hrm... As I have posted elsewhere, Chambois is quite interesting. Glad to read that WBW thinks it is "bloody". Playing the Poles and getting all your armor and vehicles knocked out 1/2 to 2/3 of the way through is plain nasty. Actually, the first time I played it, I had most of my armor knocked out by turn 4. Ugh... I enjoyed Walk in Paris for what it taught me about street fighting. It prepared me for Aachen which I preferred over W in P. All or Nothing was fun because you went from feeling harried and helpless to being kick-butt strong. With the new tanks and supplies coming in at key moments. I also dropped an arty shell on a Tiger, you gotta love that! It was the Crack arty spotter that did it, bless his eagle-eyes! I have not worked too far through the CD. I am a relative newbie at the game. But, those are my choices. L8r, Em
  19. The Adder: I would guess that WBW would say that CM's tacAI does best when defending. The Poles are considered the attackers and would tend not to do well. So, yes, you should try playing it as the Poles. You probably will be in for more of a "treat"! L8r, Em
  20. re: StugIII commander Definitely agree. I am glad to see one of those tinderboxes come up on my Sherms sights. I just replayed Chambois to a Major Allied Victory. Like 19 Echo, the victory felt hollow. On the losses side, I had barely less than the Axis. However, I did hold all the flag points. I also had the Exit nicely guarded. I did lose all my tanks. And, uhm, have to admit I replayed a crucial part where my Piat squad knocked out the last Panzer. Gee, guys, it only took 3 Alt-A sessions! I felt compelled due to the fact that at 80 meters, top floor of the building, the dunce only fired one shot in a turn. While being under command and with no return fire! Sheesh. I do take my helmet off to Lt Owoc, the arty spotter. My only veteran proved his mettle by pinning troops, trucks, and tank with some pretty nicely aimed arty! I also had a gutsy rifle squad that took out an annoying Halftrack while they were out of command range. Lastly, the Axis had a fanatic Platoon Leader squad that attacked a light building near a flag point. They sent my HQ off in panic and then fought my guarding rifle squad. Against overwhelming odds, they took back the building and flag point. At the last I swore I heard either rifle butts swooshing or maybe knife blades? Could that be possible? Those last sounds took out my remaining rifle squad. Oh, my helmet off to Wild Bill Wilder, too! L8r, Em [This message has been edited by Emthon (edited 09-27-2000).]
  21. Agree with CrapGame. I got a Hercules GF-2 MX that I am running at 190mhz memory and 195mhz core. It does great! I run it at 1280x960 and have no slowdown. I have it combined with a Cel2 @ 922mhz. L8r, Em
  22. WB- I want to add my thanks to that others. I have enjoyed the others that come before it on the "list" you see when looking at the CD scenarios. I did get my bu** kicked though on Chambois. I went in with a very frontal assault similar to some others I have done as the Americans. Definitely looks like a more sneaky and pincer type attack is warranted. Thanks, Em
  23. Well, guys, I had enough of the V3 texture loss. It was spoiling my CMBO enjoyment enough that I got myself a Geforce-2 MX. I am very pleased with the results for CM. Absolutely no problems and better performance as well! I run in 1280x960. Very happy! The one bit of sadness is that I am a long time 3dfx user. I have had 2 V1s, 3 V2s, 2 V3s. Actually still have one V2 and V3 in my son and daughter's two machines. Anyway, enough on the sentimental side. L8r, Em
  24. Ho-hum...I got tired of waiting and decided to get the GeForce2-MX. Since I wanted to have a processor that matched the power of the MX, I decided to get a Cel2-566. Overclocked, of course! I am still gelling the system and will give a more complete story this evening. I have the Cel2 stable at 890 mhz. I am trying to push it into the 935 mhz realm. I need to do the bios trick to get my voltage to the cpu at > 1.75. Anyway, got tired of waiting on 3dfx and took the nvidia plunge. I have been a 3dfx diehard since the days of the Voodoo 1 card. So sad.... L8r, Em
  25. Freak- Lessee...the V3 will work with CM. However, on larger maps and high resolutions, 1024 and greater, you will get texture whiteout. What this means is that after "some" amount of time, individual textures will get lost and turn white. Eventually, all textures white out and the entire screen turns white. I was able to play through All or Nothing, a very large map with many units, by continually saving, quitting CM, reloading CM, and reloading my saved game. A pain in the butt? Sure. Worth it? Sure. It is a great game, after all! CM is not OGL compatible. Only D3D. Your deal sounds so good that I would think it would be worth the try. I would hope that 3dfx will get a driver version that fixes their admitted bug. Regards, mike
