  1. First, take a nice look at the past 5 days worth of posts. Then, just think if they had tested the new engine on WWII, instead of some fictional war for a smaller niche audience that would like a simulator of contemporary combat of the sort we are currently engaged in. Imagine the howling, complaints, claims of treachery, so forth. I think right now they look pretty smart for letting this title iron out the bugs, so that for the next one (with the same engine, but with everyone else having progressively upgraded their PCs) they can present WWII on a level that folks here are accustomed too, and that much more bug-free

BFC are clever folks, and this was a good strategy. Could you expect anything less from folks who bring us these great strategic/tactical products?

  2. Finished the campaign on Elite, here's what worked for me:

Keep your guys in the vehicles until you're about 250m from any suspect buildings (because of RPGs -- if they had anything better, your vehicles would have already been hurting). Empty out a Stryker, see if anyone shoots. If they do, the enemy gets blasted by everyone in LOS, even if your squad absorbs some rounds. Use that same empty Stryker (you might want to let the squad take the Javelins off and go on a roof somewhere for overwatch) to flush out any more, and just move everyone up and keep blasting, making sure your infantry don't get gunned down.

I also have to point out that ranges for various weapons and info on their lethality is in the manual. Any kind of MMG can take you out at 700m or greater very easily in the open. Assault rifles are more limited, but still a nuisance at anything around 300m or closer, and rapidly more lethal thereof.

The armor pathfinding thing kills me too, esp. when it turns its back on enemy positions, or wanders down some strange uncleared alley because it can't see the big gap I blew in the wall.

EDIT - revised my m's upwards

  3. Sorry Northman, I guess that came out wrong. I guess I mean more of what Kineas said, some of the stuff in CMx1 was highly abstracted and never felt right. You also have to remember that the spaces in CMx1 were significantly bigger, as the abstracted icons also implied abstracted terrain as well. This is more like a FPS with CM rules and management overhead.

Ever play a realistic FPS like America's Army, or any of the other semi-realistic ones? Someone breaks out into the open when you've got your SAW ready within 300 yards, he's toast. Very easy to lay down heavy surpressing fire, with a LMG, or pick off individual soldiers from similar ranges with the new scopes everyone seems to have. It's like everyone is a sniper now, not firing over open sights like in the WWII CMx1 timeframe.

Cover is very hard to come by in the early scenarios so far, but if you make it into a stone building, you'll be ok. Rooftops seem to be a risk -- better angles of fire, but much more exposure to being picked off. I usually just put a squad with Javelins on some far off rooftop to provide overwatch.

  4. ....tracers bouncing off buildings, so cool!

The Mk19, what a great weapon. In one mission, I killed 2 T-62KM(?) and 3 BTRs by getting in some rear shots on the tanks and APCs.

So many nice little things, thanks BFC, for a great game, and don't let all this negativity get to ya, this game is exactly what I envisioned and hoped for, my expectations are met and exceeded! smile.gif

  5. Vehicles seem to often not be able to drive through huge gaps in the wall, and this is arbitrary, with both tracked and wheeled vehicles. One mission also would not let me target a wall -- not sure what that was about.

I turned one wall into swiss cheese, huge gaps twice as big as the vehicles that were supposed to go through -- I finally gave up and drove the rest around, as only 1 in 3 actually would obey the commands.

  6. 1 - Excellent!

Is it different? Yes! That would be the whole point. From when CMBO came out back in 2000 (I think), all we heard was whining about how it should be real time (so many arguments about that one), model 1:1, be modern, etc.

So, here we are, and some people weren't ready for a change -- they wanted CMBB or AK with modern equipment, or all their old commands from the old game. I'm still getting used to the command menu, but I understand the logic (all commands with one hand). Camera is also still tricky, but eventually I'll work it out.

Unlike TOW, which I found mediocre off the bat, this is just awesome, everything I wanted and have been waiting for for all these years. I'm so happy that not only do I have this to play with, but upcoming modules as well, for modern and WWII.

Everyone has been playing CM so long, they forget what a steep learning curve it was (especially BB, ouch!). I used to have dreams about CM because of how much of a challenge it was to master it. The first 4 months were frustration mixed with joy. People forget this isn't your average war game, and if you play it on Elite and aren't ready for it (cough, I think I am, or will learn ;) ), you will get spanked. This is a high-level game, with slim margins between winning and losing.

Don't think you're going to do brain surgery your first day at Medical school.

  7. 14Mb is a tiny attachment for an e-mail today. Change your e-mail account provider... You used an outdated e-mail provider.
    tongue.gif

Um, I've been working in the online industry (for two different studios) for almost a decade, and that's news to me. 14MB is huge, with our without broadband. Most people don't like trading 14MB files, esp. considering how many turns we're talking here.

  8. TOW has depth, but it is still flawed. Such a shame, it has so much potential, but just too many bugs, and the missions are too hard (at least for my patience).

CMSF is very hard, but beautiful, with none of TOW's flaws, and all of the upsides. I am completely happy with this product at this point, and looking forward to user-generated missions soon.

  9. We've all been waiting for this game a REALLY long time, and many of us expected this in June. It makes no sense that Paradox has it all now, and we don't. I got screwed on T-72 this way too, finding out only later I could have gotten it at a significant discount from Steam.

    POST THE DAMN FILES

  10. US and ING troops fighting insurgents, including air strike (or maybe arty), firefight, and mortaring.

That's a SAW firing, right? Sounds like it does on AA.

    http://www.liveleak.com/player2.swf?token=10a_1185492232

Also, I'm assuming the other troops with the guy with the SAW are ING, as they have AKs and are apparently speaking arabic.

EDIT: I think it is arty, not air, based on some of what they said.

  11. I kinda feel sorry for Tom, though his review was just horrible. That HEAT comment said it all -- clearly not a grog or a real war gamer.

Maybe he's used to this happening, but I think this will be the day he lost a lot of credibility with a certain niche of the PC gaming consumer base.

So, the count -- 3 non-grogs, 3 crappy reviews (assuming Bruce posts his negative review), and a bunch of great ones from grogs. Gee, wonder who I should listen too.... ;)

    C'mon Friday, get here already!!!
