  1. Played the original X-Com this weekend after a long absence -- I changed my mind, it needs improving. Main bones to pick:

    * - Battle start -- the game lands you smack in the middle of an occupied battlefield, which can be nuts on terror missions at any kind of advanced level. It would be better to let you recon the situation from the air and plan your attack in some way

    * - Night Vision -- enough said, this should be an option by default, it is the 21st century after all.

*Proning out -- Need this for better cover.

Without the above, it turns into Paper-Rock-Scissors. Lots of getting sniped and losing tons of guys at the advanced levels, and the easy levels are too easy.

  2. I'm reading "Dogs of War" right now (loved the movie too), and it occurred to me that there haven't been a lot of mercenary games (excluding the ones for the console) that have concentrated on strategy, tactics, budgeting, etc. X-Com in a way filled this niche, as you apparently were somewhat of a free enterprise company (almost like a PMF) that UFO defense had been outsourced to. Jagged Edge 2 I presume was a lot more in that vein, but like I said, something just never rubbed me the right way with that (and I bought it twice!)

A game that lets you pull off "Dogs of War" or Sierra Leone/Executive Outcomes types ops, combined with a CMx1 or CMx2 fighting interface would be awesome.

  3. Ooh, X-com!!! I wish they would even just make the original available again. I was thinking about that the other night -- all it really needs is some streamlining around some of the options (like the soldier equipping interface, and production interface), a graphics tweak, and it would be ready. Always wondered why this fell by the wayside. I tried playing Jagged Edge 2, but couldn't get any momentum. I miss X-com.

  4. I guess I got tired of all the file swapping for just a minute of gameplay, and at 10mb, that's a longer upload/download time. It would be nice if the functionality were integrated somehow off of a central server or something, rather than flipping in and out of the game to download the file, send the e-mail, etc. I know the CMx1 games were like this, but it gets old after 10 years. CMSF also is not as versatile with setting up QB games.

Maybe I'm just *****ing, and not in the mood anymore -- dunno :P

Oh, I know, one more thing -- airstrikes take waaay too long, maybe that's realistic, but not always very useful or fun.

  5. Nothing much on my list lately for pending PC games. How about you?

    Current list --

Histwar (hopefully by Q4 this year?)

Empire Total War (Q1 '09, last I heard)

For both, it will be good to do some background reading and finally get into Napoleonic Warfare. I love digging in and going whole hog, and already have two books in mind (Chandler and Nosworthy, I think). For Empire, it will also be great to finally get a good Age of Sails battle simulation going, and also get into that whole era. Also will do some reading there :)

Not really so interested in the Shock Force Marine module coming out -- for all my excitement about Shock Force, I've kinda burned on it. I miss PBEM, and it just seems like there are too many obstacles (big file size, etc.), unless someone knows of an app. that makes it easy with yahoo mail or some other free web mail. Great game, just is missing something. I'm actually (despite my protestations to the contrary) looking forward to the WWII modules coming out (any word?) CM Campaigns also would have been nice like 2 years ago. Not so sure I would mess with it now.

Can't really think of anything else here -- Spore seems interesting, but not my thing. Medieval Total War II is a bit complex and I'm not really interested in beating it again -- sometimes I really miss the simplicity of Shogun Total War and the expansions.

Anybody else have any good recommendations?

  6. WARNING - GRAPHIC DEATH SITUATION, NO GORE, FRIENDLY CASUALTIES

    http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=18f_1201000704

I think 155mm round was used as an IED, close up of either US or ING squad digging it up (I think ING from how unprofessional they were) and it goes off in between them. Nothing left, just a crater. Very good look of aftermath without gore.

Shocking, really, you can even hear it in the chopper pilot's voices, and they must have seen a lot already. Just so quickly, those lives extinguished. And a 8 foot crater left where they were.

  7. I was under the impression the focused warhead aspect of a HEAT round created a centrally focused plasma stream after initial impact -- I was also under the impression the whole point of a rpg (the shape) was to be a HEAT round. Was it only a HE? Either way, I'm sure we can all agree that had that been a Stryker or Humvee, it would have experienced some panicking and decreased efficiency. That mannequin's arm was blown off at the wrist, and it got an instant haircut.

  8. As the original poster of this thread, I thought I would add in some news to those who like FPS (sorry if this belongs in the general forum, but it is relevant to my original thread and the weapon system) --

Call of Duty 4 (COD 4) has Both the M-14 and M-21 available as weapons, both of which are excellently simulated (in my amateur opinion, expert/experienced opinions are welcome) and can be used to great effect against AI and human opponents alike. If anything, COD 4 has made me an even bigger fan of both systems (especially when I shoot someone through a wall at 300 yards).

On a more general note, the game itself is excellent all around, and has given me (already experienced with modern weaponry in games but not real life) a greater appreciation for the weapons involved. This game complements Shock Force for those that like to try to simulate what being in the middle of modern combat might be like (scary). It is probably my favorite game of the year.

  9. I know numerous accounts from this war, with these same type of buildings, have said that 50 cal is overkill for cities, because it goes through everything (thus the quote in the clip "It went through the wall and everything after, leaving large holes..."). I think that this (maybe due to performance issues?) is still undermodeled in the game. It sounds like 50 cals can take walls and maybe buildings down, given enough shooting.

  10. Let's not forget the downside of Tac AI -- tanks and other vehicles running away in crazy ways, exposing flanks, doing other things that drive us nuts. Pathfinding issues aside, I still have seen less of that than I did in CMx1. It used to drive me crazy that a tank with a good chance for a flank shot on a Tiger or something like that would consistently refuse to stand it's ground and fire, despite repeated orders. Have some faith in BFC.

  11. Something also to think about -- CMBO was released when WWII was just regaining popularity with the public at large, and especially the Western European front.

Another factor -- the game was very complex and grog-oriented. People who took a chance on the first game and decided it was too much for them (and there are a lot out there, I introduced around 6 people to the game, and not one was still playing it 3 months later). When the sequels came out, on theaters they didn't care about, they probably passed.

Finally, the number 1 complaint I heard about CMx1 from average gamers (not grogs like us, who can appreciate what is going on under the hood) was graphics. Those Lego-like graphics turned away many a gamer who probably would have given it a chance, but were turned off by how dated it looked. CM needed a big graphics refresh.

CMBB also marked a big change in playing styles, as they implemented all the changes we all begged for. Those changes made CM more real, but less fun for some people who were used to galloping across the battlefield at will, instead of having their huddling masses pinned down by MGs. I like realism, as do many others here, but for a game (games are supposed to be fun), we may be in the minority. So really, the demise of CMx1 might be our fault.

I personally am very happy with CMSF, as it has met all my expectations, and continues to improve with every patch. It is my hope BFC makes enough money off this to keep going, and to release more modules. Even given CM history, and the amount of bitching that goes on here, I am really suprised at how sour a lot of people are on the new product. Is it just that many people here are conservative in their personal habits, and have a hard time adjusting to new things? It's not CMx1 with new graphics and 1:1, but it is that same pursuit of reality and fidelity in terms of the battlefield that makes this game so great for me.
