  1. I'm wondering how it is you are losing your Abrams -- they should almost be immune to anything the enemy can throw at them on that particular mission (with the exception of flank shots). Are you talking about the very first mission from the campaign? Move the Abrams just past the sand berm, make sure they face the compound and trenches, let them shoot all the tanks they see. Don't move them up too much, they are plenty lethal far away, and this makes sure you don't get hit in the flanks. Frontal armor on Abrams is extremely strong.

Meanwhile, load up a few squads with Javelins (the Acquire command when they are in the Strykers, and don't forget the launcher) and post them on top of the berm, and at the end of the berm. That way they will still cover you from tanks as you move your forces up. You can always put them back in the Strykers to complete the mission.

Drop a crapload of artillery on the trenches and main building block facing you. Be sure to use the spotter or a leader with high leadership values, otherwise the delay will be significant. Use "Personnel" rounds on the trenches, they airburst for greater lethality.

Finally, never unload your troops or get a vehicle within 200m of a building unless the shooters in those buildings are supressed. Make good use of your 40mm nade Stryker, that one is one of the best at taking out inf in both buildings and trenches.

  2. Compared to their M2/M3 cousins, BMPs in general seem a bit trigger shy. I'd like them to be more aggresive in using the main gun (that's why it's there) and the missles, without me having to explicitly order them to open up. Thus, 3 BMPs spot enemy anything, they open up when they have LOS and spotting. M2s and M3s are not nearly so slow to put some real hurt on the enemy, and not just a little lead.

  3. Back in the CMx1 days, I was one of the folks leaning towards the WEGO side of things, though I did see some weaknesses in the WEGO system. When BFC said they were including RTS in the current release, I did not think I would use it much, maybe occasionally.

Boy was I wrong. I haven't done WEGO since the first day I played CMSF, and I've been playing consistently since 7/27.

Is it hard to do all the commands while balancing real-life issues? Sure, but you get used to the commands and the keyboard shortcuts, even under the new system. You have to take things slow anyways to not get slaughtered.

Do you get to smell the roses, enjoy the little things? Well, you won't get a replay of that tank kill 10 times in a row, but you will be playing so much more, it hardly matters, with plenty of time to take in the little things now that I've mastered the basics under fire. When you play RTS, you rack up so much more experience, you get through a mission in about 1/3 the time, and can redo it or try out some favorites in the extra time WEGO players are spending to micromanage every detail.

Which brings me to a little challenge I thought up -- why not have some WEGO/RTS matchups? Let's get our best WEGO players against some RTS folks, both conditions (or just WEGO if the RTS people are willing, since we can do PBEM), and see who is gaining experience faster. We're all relative noobs at this point, so we'll see that experience curve (I argue we are seeing it already) develop this next month or so.

Heck, I'll even PBEM, hit me up here, and lets get some discussions going. I think I'm ready for ya ;)

  4. Hi,

BMP-1/AT-4 Bugs/issues very evident if you play Zipuli's excellent scenario (the bugs are not his, and only detract from his nice setup):

I know AFVs are programmed to not to fire cannon at infantry and structures as default due to low ammo stores (or are very conservative when they do), but can we make an exception for BMP-1s, given how fragile and disposable they are? Sometimes that shoot-first instinct is what helps preserve them from a LAW or Stryker. I would much rather a BMP (though not an Abrams or MGS) rip through its ammo than die with a full ammo load while a Stryker or inf squad sad within view for 5 min with no action.

In addition, the ATGMs almost never fire on their own on the BMP-1, and I've noticed about 50% of the time with dismounted AT-4s as well, and independent RPG teams. US squads with their Javelins don't seem to have this problem, they fire right on cue almost every time an enemy AFV shows up.

  5. Great scenario!!

I played this as RTS 3 times, won it finally on the 3rd try, though with some significant casualties.

To make it easier, I suggest adding another tank platoon, either T-54s or understrength T-62s.

It takes a lot of caution and planning, but it is winnable and a great challenge. Please keep up the good work!

This is why I hope they open up the scenario depot for CMSF soon, so many jewels like this will get lost in the board shuffle.

  6. Some time back on this forum (I can't find the post or video) someone posted a video that demonstrated the effects from spalling and fragmentation on folks holed up in houses from different caliber rifles. Basically, anything from an AK up is going to progressively make it very uncomfortable for anyone inside, and inflict increasing amounts of damage on them. If anything, I think folks holed up in the houses last too long, but that might be the nature of the stone buildings being modeled, as opposed to the shacks we were used to in CMBB.
