1. I have advanced and occupy the first vl (victory location) with some losses from the shelling from the Panther and the gun. The smoke screen has forced the Panther to enter the village on the far end. Things are a bit touch and go at the moment but I am confident I have rendered most of the German infantry Combat ineffective. An artillery strike is landing on the gun position. Dealing with the Panther G remains to be the problem...

  2. SF

Wow, I was wondering why I hadn’t received a turn from you. Something must be up with one of our mail servers as I sent the turn yesterday or the day before. I have been receiving 3 copies of each of your mailings so far, must be a server glitch.

I have resent the last turn I have.

Don't want to get sidetracked here (too much!), but I do want to make one point.

I feel that the features you request, while innocent enough, are the beginning of a slippery slope. Add medals and Prestige Points, and the next thing you know, BTS will be releasing s**t like "Motorcycle Wars" or something. Think that's silly? I saw it happen in less than 2 years at Talonsoft. Either the focus is on realism...or it is not. Any middle ground is dangerous.

    IMHO

A campaign mode of some type would be a tremendous bonus to single player re-playability. I understand the opinion of "realism" however as we all know, no realistic simulation of combat is possible".

CM is a wonderful production. It is well made and fun! I bought and play it to have fun. So why not increase the fun factor by adding a traceable goal? I know the turnover rate in manpower was extraordinarily high. However some did survive the war. I would suggest an officers career may be tracked from battle to battle as a compromise to a full campaign. I know it would increase my enjoyment of CM many times over in single player mode. Why not have more fun? It would be able to be toggled on and off so everyone would not have to use this feature if ever implemented.

I also do not believe we have to worry about BTS making the choices Talonsoft has made. CM has been made by gamers.

    Regards...

  4. The attack out of the tree line into the outskirts of the village was proceeding nicely. Everything going well (after ten turns of maneuvering) the Americans have a toe hold in the outskirts of the village. Very light casualties have been taken to this point. I have a 105mm fire mission (100 rounds) I have been holding on to. Call it in and WHAM…friendly fire right into my attack! Arrgh, what a troublesome development.

The Panzer on the hill has adjusted its position. It has also been positively identified as a Panther G (oh great). It begins shelling the treeline where my troops are trying to recover from their own artillery barrage. To add to this daunting turn of events a large gun opens fire from behind a wall 300 meters distant from the treeline…..

Things are just starting to get interesting in our PBEM game also Colonel.

The map is dominated by two hills. One at the rear has given the Colonel an excellent overwatch position on which he has stationed a Panzer. It has been taking shots at my Infantry as I try to cross the open ground on the other hill to launch an attack into a village.

Whump! Where the H@!! did that come from? Was all I could think until I finally spotted it! It has taken 8 turns to cross a few hundred meters of open ground just because of that one panzer. Which of course at this time is id’ed as “Panther?”.

  6. The CMFM (Combat Mission field manual)

The estimated time delay before the strike commences is shown in the artillery spotter’s window. Keep in mind this is only the estimated time and it can take a little less or much longer before the first rounds fall. The “clock” will tick down much more slowly while the spotter does not have a line of sight to the target.

    Actually they can.

I forget the exact formula but it goes roughly like this: you know the velocity of the round and you know the distance it is traveling. You calculate the time it takes from rounds out to impact and then you simply use a stop watch to measure the time so you can give the FO a few seconds advance warning so he knows when the rounds will impact.

    Commands:

FO: "Fire mission, cordinates xx.yy. Ranging fire, I will adjust"

    Battery: "Rounds out........ attention ..impact"

FO then adjusts and goes FFE.

That is the procedure the Finnish army used and still uses as a back up.

    True.

However what I am saying is when a Fire Order is received there is a delay in processing that order into a fire mission. This is the delay that is built into the game mechanics. Once the round leaves the tube it can be timed.

I believe the answer is "Your FO's watch is an ETA of the arrival time from the firing battery". No FO can tell you exactly when impact will occur.

Capt. Marvel "Get those rounds here now!"

Lt. Lewy Fo " Sorry Cap. they usually get 'em off by now!"

Capt. Marvel "Damn it man, can't you see those Germans swarming all over the village? It's been 75 seconds!"

Lt. Lewy Fo. " Sh!T Cap. Called 'em back, their getting right on it. Said it would be just another minute or two" smile.gif
