I lost 2 platoons of infantry in that city fight because I was unaware of the movement limitations smile.gif Now you know why you were gunning them down in the streets. I was dumbfounded every time my troops left cover and waltzed outside into the streets with signs that read "Shoot me, I'm easy".

  3. Here is a small FREEWARE program I have been using daily since version 1 (about a year). It works in Windows and frees up available RAM . When CM starts to slow down I (Esc) to desktop, click my short cut to “Rambooster” that is on my taskbar. There is a definite performance increase upon returning to CM. http://www.saunalahti.fi/~borg/rambooster/

(My system Specs. PIII 600, 192 megs. ram, Diamond Viper V770 32 megs. Windows98 2nd. Edition)

  4. I have noticed when one plots movement between buildings with walls that border one another the AI re-routes the movement commands that are issued. Many times re-routing around the bordering walls into the streets (or terrain), exiting the building and then back into the target building. I have seen this on several maps where large heavy buildings share common walls.

I am wondering if there is a method for movement from one building to another without exiting the buildings?

Steppes or Plains rise and fall. They are riddled with culverts, gullies and draws. These depressions provide cover and concealment for movement. Even though hill crests in CM do not offer LOS protection when you are near the crest they do offer concealed and covered routes. Farmland offers rises and falls, walls, hedges, stands of trees, woodlands that have not been cleared and buildings. Many if not most riverbanks are covered with vegetation if not overgrown with it. There will be enough cover to deploy infantry effectively, it all depends on the scenario and area being played.

Abbott, I'd love to see our wonderful country? How about financing my trip so I can see exactly what you mean? wink.gif

As you know I was raised next door to the town you presently reside in. I travel there three to four times per year to visit family. I also visit friends there who share the same interests I do. Drop me a line with your address Col_ and I will stop in and see you in three or four weeks and we will discuss the details of our trip.

After playing Close Combat 2 for years, we were all very excited when we heard CC3 was coming out. Then, it arrived. Boy were we disappointed. It was just a battle of tanks. Infantry played no part in the fighting and were merely walking corpses.

Is this what CM2 will be like? After all, we're talking about Russia here-frozen tundra and all. How can you hide infantry let alone sneak up a schreck team on a T-34 when there are no trees to hide behind? The most you'll probably be provided with are the winter skeletons of what few trees actually grow there.

There are of course the buildings to hide in, but in this game they come crashing down with a few shots from a 75mm or bigger gun. What is an infantry team to do to survive on the East Front?

    LOL...

Russia has many diverse geographical areas. Open Steppes to the rugged mountains. Light forests, rolling hills, open farmland, dense forest, and small and large rivers. Even the Steppes are cut with huge culverts from rainwater run off. Russia is as diverse geographically as any body of land. Drive or take a train from the East coast of America to the West coast of America (or any country) see the difference in terrain features?

Personally, I liked the way it was done with ASL. Each vehicle had a rarity factor and you rolled the dice for availability to determine how low a rarity factor you could choose. I wouldn't like rare units to be overpriced; just more rare. smile.gif

That would be an interesting toggle in CM 2. When setting up a QB toggle on "The Rarity Factor" continue on to select your troops and not all troop types/weapons systems would be available for purchase.

  8. I have played many PBEM games and at this point understand your thoughts completely. I am beginning to see that a note or two exchanged before a PBEM match begins will be a good idea. It is a little distressing to try and tailor a force along historical lines only to be met with a hodge podge of troop types that are a conglomerate of the most effective (in game terms) fighting units that can be fielded. It seems one has to allow for the possibility of facing the “Video Game Mix” when choosing ones own forces which almost always forces one to alter their own ToE.

One solution is often game with the same players over and over. Once you have met a player that thinks along the same lines as ones self towards unit selection and composition. Another solution (one I enjoy) is to have the forces chosen by the computer which often leads to some very interesting force compositions. This of course is only practical if both sides agree to use this feature.

Personally after 30 some odd PBEM games completed I have yet to purchase a Koing Tiger, JadgTiger or JadgPanther. I have purchased one Jumbo to use in a quick battle. It was my first and took a gun hit before it fired its first shot. I will at some point purchase one or two of the units I have not yet used as I would enjoy seeing them on the field. I just seem to find the tactical mix of the more common equipment a bit more enjoyable.

Yes your men would know how much it rained and have a good idea of how wet the ground was. They would also know that they might have a few difficulties if they do not stay to the road network or are not careful with the use and deployment of their equipment. They may even know that the motor pool will not issue replacement equipment for them every time the weather changes.
