  1. Finns are tough bastards, never heard anyone disagree with this tho on the other hand Ive heard alot of jokes told about them by the Swedes, Norwegians, etc. But certainly none had to do with their toughness. Btw am I right in that Nokia is like the #4 branded company in the world now? Damn impressive. ------------------ As the victors define history, so does the majority define sanity...
  2. The Russian juggernaut seemed unstoppable as it rolled onto Berlin, but from what I've read more recently is they stretched pretty thin as far as supply lines went, guess it went both ways. I would surmise that without Normandy etc., the Germans would have dug in and been damn near impossible to root out. Plus the Russians always seem to fight best on their home turf. ------------------ As the victors define history, so does the majority define sanity...
  3. I like using those zippy little things, they are one of the few pieces of equip where the Brits have an advantage over the Jerrys. Sure isnt rifle companies
  4. Ah, I suppose I should have been able to deceipher Ost was east. My german is very poor but I have a fair knowledge of svensk and the languages have alot of similar words. Ah well, anyways I always prefer to ask questions and look stupid they just be stupid ------------------ As the victors define history, so does the majority define sanity...
  5. Im looking forward to decimating some rear-line wagon depots I was thinking about cavalry and I would imagine the horses would have to be modeled as seperate transport units, since one usually didnt fight from horseback tho I imagine you COULD do so at a penalty, not to mention it wouldn't be too clever if under return fire. And no Mikael I wasn't upset about it tho I imagine my platoon commanders are pretty pissed after watching their veteran rifles evaporate even tho sporting a 2:1 numberical advantage ------------------ As the victors define history, so does the majority define sanity...
  6. I really did enjoy the 18 year Macallan when I sampled it on my last birthday: however I really don't think it compares with the Laphroig. I have not tried *blush* the Lagavulin, tho I have noted a bottle of 18 year at the store that is highly tempting for sure. Question #1: should I spend the $50 and get it? and Question #2: Not being impressed with the Macallan's what would one recommend as the best of the less peaty types? ------------------ As the victors define history, so does the majority define sanity...
  7. Ost VG? Enlighten me please, while compared to laymen I'm a historical expert on WWII, my knowledge pales in comparison to some of the walking encyclopedias we are graced with on this forum. ------------------ As the victors define history, so does the majority define sanity...
  8. Heh GMT +1 is greenwich(sp?) mean time. Grr I should know how to spell that. Still glad we playing that Polish-German encounter tho Insu, thanks for the setup and such. ------------------ As the victors define history, so does the majority define sanity...
  9. Yes even a multi-battalion force takes but seconds on my Athlon 700 I have 192 megs and a 20 gig Barracude II so that helps too I imagine! ------------------ As the victors define history, so does the majority define sanity...
  10. Ah yes no bulgarians, perhaps it was romanians then? I remeber some distinctive black and orange counters that weren't hungarian nor italians. ------------------ As the victors define history, so does the majority define sanity...
  11. This falls outside the realm of most QB's but imo the situation would dictate what would or would not be acceptable: The battle of the bulge example being a good point. If I KNEW as a battalion cmdr that the battle in question was so important that it might help decide the war or at least holding ground/taking objective might save countless lives hell yah id be running jeeps with zooks at the Tigers, or giving the cooks carbines or whatever it damn took. On the flip side if I were cmdr in a meeting engagment I might withdraw after minimal losses if I felt the terrain/tactical position/etc. was not in my favor. My troopers lives simply would outweigh any other consideration. In this light I dont really think Fionn's "dash-o-death" was anything to complain about: The town he was relieving was in desperate straits, and as he said someone had to recon and he didnt really have any more viable recon unit available. Likewise I have no problems sending my trusty recon cars zooming forth to flush out enemy ambushes: thats their job, its an ugly one but thats war. In my experience anyways, often times the sheer speed of an armoured car is sufficient to avoid death, esp vs tank destroyers: by the time they pivot and aim the 'car is likely gone. By the way, I could use a few more PBEM's, if anyone is interested feel free to drop me an e-mail. ------------------ As the victors define history, so does the majority define sanity...
  12. Excuse my ignorance but whats the difference between a 105mm Howie and a 105mm VT model? Both in real life and game terms... ------------------ As the victors define history, so does the majority define sanity...
  13. Early in the war the Soviets had very few decent officers as Stalin had many of them killed in the purges. As I understand, the Germans were aware of this fact, and that was one of the reasons they felt they could defeat the Russians where other before them (Napoleon etc.) had failed. Later, better officers were found/learned the hard way whatever and the Soviets had more success. I do think some efforts to insure play balance will need to be done for CM2 to model the relative ineffeciency of Soviet command control, as the Soviets generally had statistically better tanks and such than the other allies imo. Also, I notice in QB's the trend with alot of people is to buy the superior armed infantries, such as Motorized PzGr etc., which gives an advantage to the Germans since the Allies can't get these qualityr forces (bleh rifle companies )except with Airborne and most players frown upon combining Airborne units with Tanks etc., whereas the Germans can freely mix their superior infantry formations with tanks. The Russians however had Smg companies and the like as standard units and I would guess these will be able to be purchased. As a side note someone I was playing saw fit to buy Veteran Volksgrenadiers does this seem right? Maybe I'm deluded but seems to be they should at best be Regulars. Not surprisingly these troops ripped my attacking forces to shreds even tho I outnumbered the Vlks 2 to 1 ------------------ As the victors define history, so does the majority define sanity...
  14. Humm loaded issue for certain IMO the problem lies less in these 'bad influences' that are prevalent and inescapable in modern society, and more in that, given the realities of modern socio-economics that the individual parents have less time and energy to spend with their kids. Whether its television/ video games/ gangs/ drugs whatever, these are just symptoms of the fact that, relative to earlier times, the majority of parents both work. When the parents get home from work they are likely tired, and its simply easier to let the children watch TV/play quake III/ etc. etc. Governmental regulations aren't going to change this root issue. A much better solution is to spend money on community centers where children can be involved in sports/education/scouting or any number of more 'productive' activities. And as a side note I don't think exposure to violence is by definition bad, its the glorification/idealization thereof that is what is harmful. I think that if the individuals that think killing/warfare etc. truly understood the grim realities of such, like watching your closest friends obliterated by heavy artillery, they would be strongly AGAINST renewing the follies of our past such as WWII. ------------------ As the victors define history, so does the majority define sanity...
  15. Ironically, in one of my current PBEM games I decided to purchase a unit of FB's and it has completely decided the battle, unless by some amazing chancehe manages to defeat me with his remaining forces. So far I think they've made 4 runs, destroying 1 pz IV with rockets bombing a Puma and StIIIG and, while missing rather badly, the tremendous shrapnel from the 500lbers(?) immobilized both targets. Later they showed again, and gunned down another TD(I just saw a plume of smoke opponent said it was such) and yet another run he gunned down an armoured car. I would guess tho that the oppoenents tactics had something to do with this: he attempted to sweep 2 seperate mechanized forces wide around either flank, while my canadian infantry had simply rushed forward into the dense woods that constituted the objective and dug in for a fight. Thus my forces were hunkered down so as not to invite the FB's attention whereas his mobile units were easily visable in their wide sweeps around the edges. Plus I was just damn lucky Anyways opponent got so upset he vowed never to play against Fb's again, so well guess they can really be good or bad, a major risk in buying them but can really come up in spades. ------------------ As the victors define history, so does the majority define sanity...
  16. Surely one of the few people one can find only good things to say about, wonderful range as an actor could do both 'serious' films and comedies with equal facility. A shame hes gone, but lived a better life than most can hardly feel too bad when alls said and done. ------------------ As the victors define history, so does the majority define sanity...
  17. Anyone a firm believer in their usefulness? Every time I buy em they seem to make large, satisfying craters but not much else Is buying veteran/crack etc. bombers more useful or not really? I'll prolly buy em here and there still just because I always like to test every nuance of a game but still...I like to win too Annoying buying em since it means you cant really buy artillery spotters since they eat up all your CA points! ------------------ As the victors define history, so does the majority define sanity...
  18. Humm been long time since I played 'Drive on Stalingrad', but as I remeber there were a number of hungarian, bulgarian, and italian divisions, and the hungarians and bulgarians were actually multi-divisional armie groups. Some of them were pretty useful too, mountain troops and the like. There was even a sole czech armoured division that I always had a soft spot for, if it was destroyed I was sorely demoralized ------------------ As the victors define history, so does the majority define sanity...
  19. All the add-ons would look great im sure, I think tho keeping the # of textures down so the game runs with voodoo2 and earlier equip is a major consideration... Plus yah I doubt they want to model evey cow in France...Belgium maybe tho ------------------ As the victors define history, so does the majority define sanity...
  20. Hummm Cossack charges Theres more imping to CM2 then you first realize...Guess it will prolly be next year before its done ah well ------------------ As the victors define history, so does the majority define sanity...
  21. Hum *twiddle* Need several! more games Anyone, everyone who cares to send me a set-up if you feel so inclined.
  22. Found this little nugget tonight, at ww.strategypage.com , Ill just transcribe it since its not especially long... August 2, 2000; The US Army has detailed the weapons being considered for the Future Combat System, the program to produce a new tank. The Army says that several of these weapons will be used, but not all will be carried by the same vehicle. Compact Kinetic Energy Missile: This weapon is 1.2 meter long and weighs fifty pounds. It is a small version of the LOSAT (Line Of Sight Anti-Tank) missile. This is a hypervelocity missile with a speed of 2,000 meters per second and works by driving a penetrator through the target by sheer velocity. The Army is considering vertical launch for this weapon The Multi-Role Cannon, a conventional weapon with both direct-fire (4,000 meter range) and indirect fire (up to 50 kilometers) modes. This might be an electro-thermal-chemical weapon The Advanced Fire Support System is another Beyond Line of Sight weapon. Described as "Rockets in a Box", this could fire several relatively cheap missiles with different functions. One would be the Loitering Attack Missile that could circle over the battlefield looking for a target for 30 minutes, or reach a target 100 kilometers away. The Electromagnetic Gun is an option, but won't be ready by 2010 and might be installed on later vehicles in the production series. Directed Energy Weapons (lasers, charged particle beams, or high-power pulse weapons) are being considered for use against particular targets and "smart threats".--Stephen V Cole Sounds like some potential for a can o' whoop ass ------------------ As the victors define history, so does the majority define sanity...
  23. Um, In my experience, and I am a relatively new player, the TacAI seems to work great...I mean your units screw up sometimes but well so it goes And sure those wimpy shermans smoke up and reverse at the first sign of my Panther high up on that hill dominating the battlefield, as in my last battle. As it turned out I took the first one down, then took an annoying track hit immobilizing my 'cat, then the damn amis invested me with a million smoke rounds so my tank was useless for quite some time...nevertheless before the battle ended the smoke cleared and the other 2 shermans met their doom Anyways I have to agree (and as I said im not someone with hundreds of hours in the game) you must be making tactical errors, in my experience the Computer isnt really too tough, he tends to be susceptible to ambushes and traps, particularly if you are willing (bit gamey I suppose) to sacrifice a squad to lure him into said ambush, which results in the decimation of his armour. Once his armoured elements are destroyed hes generally in big trouble, and a major victory is easily in your grasp... ------------------ As the victors define history, so does the majority define sanity...
  24. This is just my first two thoughts on the matter, but what about A) Use multiple waypoints so that the 'latest' cover isnt 200m back towards those trees and Use more elite units/officers that are more likely to follow orders ------------------ As the victors define history, so does the majority define sanity...
