  1. Biltong Started my first battle last night. The rules certainly have me viewing my units differently. My core units are getting the good cover and the aux's are the pointy end of the sword. Question: When creating my real battle (step 48) I had 700 points to buy arty/air. However a QB with a 2000 point limit would only allow me to buy up to 350 points worth even when set to unrestricted. I decided to use the other 350 points to buy more infantry of the type I had in the Aux QB (step 47). Is that the way to handle the extra points? Thanks. Elmo P.S. - After further review, according to Note #7, it looks like I could have bought whatever I wanted within the point limits. [ November 19, 2002, 08:57 AM: Message edited by: Elmo ]
  2. Great job with CMMOS 4.0 guys and thank you to CMHQ for hosting it all. Keep those mods coming!
  3. Should the Dawn/Dusk modifier for Wind be -1 rather than +1? In upstate NY we usually have less wind at those times of day, not more. Not sure about the former Soviet Union though.
  4. Terence In my case I don't think the enemy tanks were moving. I was playing the AI and can't verify it but they appeared to be hiding and thus not moving. Not sure about dug-in although it could be. I think Battlefront could clear this up easily, for me anyway, by commenting on whether it is possible to spot hidden units, particularly vehicles in the open, that don't move or fire if EFOW is turned on? 5. Hi John Thanks for the reply. Yes I've heard of recon by fire, although not prophlaytic fire. Are you saying either one involves shooting up the countryside including open terrain over the entire time of an advance? That sounded to me like somebodys answer to the original observation that started this thread. There certainly is a time and place for area fire, but IMO it shouldn't be the only method of spotting a hidden enemy. I agree that men/guns/vehicles hidden in good cover should usually go unnoticed until they fire and, as you say, possibly after they fire. I don't think it is realistic to say the same for vehicles in open terrain. For example in one of my games I didn't see a vehicle sitting 180m away on a forward slope even with several units, not under fire, having a LOS to that area for a few minutes. Should I have been guaranteed a spotting, no. My question is, was there _any_ chance? If not then I see that as a problem with the game. I'm not much of a bookworm so I can't quote chapter and verse of historical examples of covered troops being spotted. However I hope you're not saying it never happended? I am saying from my limited experience with the game that it has _never_happened_ and if it can't then that is unrealistic. Elmo
  6. Where are all you area fire advocates getting all your ammo?! In a medium sized 30 turn scenario I'm lucky not to run out of ammo just firing at confirmed targets, never mind spraying the whole map every minute. Is anyone thinking that is how an attack really developed, especailly regarding the open ground areas? In my admittedly limited playing experience so far (played four or five scenarios)I can't recall a single case where one of my units has ever spotted a hidden unit that didn't move or fire first. If others have the same experience then that strikes me as unrealistic.
  7. In a recent QB I found an enemy tank the hard way that was "hiding" in open ground. IIRC in another part of the same battle my sharpshooter missed seeing another tank hiding in the open until it fired. Neither tank was hull down. I agree with Jaegermeister at least as far as armor hiding in the open is concerned.
  8. COG We all really appreciate you hosting a place to download mods. However the response time is abysmal. Lately I'm getting less than 2KB/sec. I get 100 times that doing downloads from other sites. Not sure if others are seeing the same slow response or if anything can be done but it makes your site unusable for me. Elmo
  9. Actually Hoopenfaust is doing the scenario. I was just trying to help out with a map if I could find one.
  10. Couldn't get you anything directly but below is a URL with a list of Glantz atlases. The last one is for Kursk and should have what you want and more, but they aren't cheap! http://www.chez.com/barbarossa/dg1.html
  11. Glantz's book on Kursk covers it very well although I find the maps hard to read. I'll check a couple of personal sources for you and see if I can scare up a good situation map.
  12. About as much fun as bringing a knife to a gun fight.
  13. Pretty sure I saw this Pioneer issue in my QB game last night. I ended up with something like 9 FT's as a result. Would have been fine if I were fighting in the streets, but they will be pretty useless on offense on the fairly open map I'm playing.
  14. Thanks. Couldn't find the thread but I assume adding them wouldn't be high on Battlefront's list.
  15. Are there any railroad bridges? I couldn't find any after a quick look last night, only road bridges. Seems like we could use both RR bridges over roads/water and road bridges over RR tracks.
  16. Thanks. It looked like all the buttons were grayed out except Hotkeys, but I knew there had to be a simple answer.
  17. Is there an easy way to go back to the 2D Map Editor from the 3D Preview? So far the only way I've found is to Alt-Q and start again. Thanks.
  18. Never mind. [ November 04, 2002, 02:32 PM: Message edited by: Elmo ]
  19. Abbott Thanks for a fun scenario. Great map. I sent you some more feedback directly to avoid spoilers here. Elmo
  20. Somebody with a lot of free time could run a test, firing a FT into a strong headwind. I'd like to see a pic of that.
  21. Chad Your units are not acting in a dumb manner. They are just heading toward the last known source of toilet paper which they desperately need. Elmo [ November 01, 2002, 06:24 AM: Message edited by: Elmo ]
  22. Open wound spotted. Hmm, now where did I put that salt shaker...ah here it is. Ordered CMBB on Monday and got it yesterday. 48 hour delivery! Hey, Battlefront what took you so long? Sure is great to live in the good 'ole US of A.
  23. Why do I keep picturing the scene from Enemy at the Gates where the captured Russian soldier is put in a German uniform and given a spool of wire to drag across the open ground?
