Greetings! I need a little help, if possible, in choosing units for PBEMs. Being historically challenged, I have no idea which units were rare, which were not, and which were thought fictional. Nor do I know where units fought (i.e. when is it appropriate to use paratroops? What tank/arty support would be attached?). What level of artillery support is appropriate for a company? A battalion? I have seen bits and pieces of information, but what would help me would be some sort of rarity/unit organization quick reference. I've offended a few people in PBEM through my choice of units/level of artillery support, and I would like to avoid this in the future. For those in the know - do you get all of your information from separate sources? I just today bought the "Handbook on German Military Forces," so I am hoping this will help a bit, but I can tell that gleaning this information will be slow going, judging from the size of the book, and my available time. Thank you very much for your assistance. -Scorp

CM RankingLadder
Scorpion replied to yobobo@tournamenthouse's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
Very well, Abbott, you have email waiting! -
Not only that, but the game is abstracting 'casualties' from other factors, such as turning tail and running away. Your shots may have completely missed, but Joe and Bob G.I. may have decided that the Army just wasn't worth getting shot up by snipers, and deserted. -Scorp

CM RankingLadder
Scorpion replied to yobobo@tournamenthouse's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
Abbot - you are a member of the ladder and looking for a game? -
I think the difference, Colonel, is in presentation. If someone were to come in here and say "I didn't like the demo, here's why. Is there anything I missed that might make the full version any better?" I imagine that person would get a much different response. However, Jaeger basically said "this game sucks," no question or constructive criticism inherent. It's all about how someone presents their ideas, not about the ideas themselves. I came from the Close Combat series myself, my wargaming evolved from Kampfgruppe, way back when. I played the CC series because it was new, and fun, and I thought it to be a very good representation of WWII squad-level combat. After trying CM, and talking to the folks on this forum, I saw how wrong I was. I bought it, and immediately convinced my brother to buy it, so we could beat up on each other. I can see what Jaeger is saying - having one of my men drop dead on the field or run off the map while the squad takes fire does add a little bit to the immersion factor. However, I don't play the game to be immersed - I play it because it is fun and it is a very detailed representation of WWII combat. What makes it fun for me, and what I play for, are not the same as he, apparently. The other reason that I think Jaeger received the responses he did was due to recent events, which have people somewhat upset in general. Anyways, Jaeger, not everyone will like the game. Is there anything you were trying to say by posting other than "I don't like the game?"

Greetings, I have downloaded the current unit database from CMHQ. However, it only seems to contain vehicles, not infantry and support weapons. Am I being a total idiot and missing them completely? Or are they not there? If they are, can you direct my incompetent self to them? If not, is there another database somewhere that contains infantry? Thanks! -Scorp

Friend and I are trying a Pbm but can't get it to work

Or, you can use the ICQ file transfer ability. You may wish to check the PBEM section of the manual, as it is often quite helpful. -Scorp -
CM Ladder at Tournament House

By the way, I attempted to "find an opponent," but when clicking on the opponents' names as instructed, I was not given an email address... Thanks, -Scorp -
Add. Feature Requested for Tournament Save
Scorpion replied to citizen's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
This feature would, obviously, also be helpful to the current CM RPG which is underway - or any of the others in development. By the way, when does the CMMC begin, and how does one join the mailing list/get on the roster? Thanks! -Scorp -
Another 'post your email for PBEM' thread
Scorpion replied to John Hough's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
My current email is: bilekbp@hotmail.com I will play any side, any type of battle. I consider myself fairly proficient, though I have had few opponents other than the AI to cut my teeth on. However, I have so far faired quite well in those battles. I am looking forward to playing some veterans, in fair and honorable combat. My PBEM frequency varies: Some evenings, I can play for hours at a time, some evenings not at all. My ICQ: 1229135 Cheers! -Scorp -
You might want to also keep tabs on www.reactorcritical.com - They seem to have the latest drivers, and tons of useful information regarding 3D cards. -Scorp

How much do they pay these morons?
Scorpion replied to Pham911's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
Madpad - not only that, but you will notice from time to time that during night ops your men can misidentify each other and start blasting away. When your .50 cal targets your mortar support at night, it doesn't turn out well for the mortars. -Scorp -
SF, what are you talking about? Isn't that uncalled for? I don't see where he said anything upsetting, here or in other posts. Master Bates, I have not yet taken the time to figure it out, but I am assuming there must be a link somewhere which explains the procedure. If I find it later, I will let you know. -Scorp

uhh, well, I stupidly used a password that I use for my ISP...heh.
-
I just finished a game vs. Teach, in which I was saving the movie files. Is there any way for me to remove or change the password I was using for my side, so I can post the movies without a password or with Enter as the password? I'm debating about whether or not to post my first AAR. Thanks! -Scorp

Wooden bunkers: Too easy to spot?
Scorpion replied to Scorpion's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
Damn, posts get buried quickly here. -
BTS has stated (there was an old thread, somewhere) that there are different AI "personalities," and that sometimes the AI will not choose the correct personality for the situation, depending on experience level and such. -Scorp
-
I've never been able to ambush units with a wooden bunker. My bunkers are usually spotted, even at long range. Weren't these fortifications usually made purposefully difficult to spot? That is, hidden by terrain and camoflauge? I have tried putting them in all sorts of woods, in open terrain, in brush...it never works, they're always spotted and blown up by support assets, before they get to ambush infantry at medium to close range. Am I missing something? I'm using ambush markers, but they either aren't working or the bunker is simply being spotted before it even fires. And yes, I did do a search on this, but found nothing. Thanks, -Scorp
-
Stupid question, perhaps? But with your Mod guide, is there any place we can download ALL of the recommended mods in ONE BIG FILE? With just getting DSL, this would be convenient for me, rather than trying to track all of the different downloads...I have no idea what has been created, and where it is all posted, so one comprehensive file would be awesome! Thank you, Matt! -Scorp

Who wrote this "fuzzy logic?"
Scorpion replied to Dr. Brian's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
Dr. Brian, Yes, I realize that you can type, you have proven that. I am not sure what you meant by that... The people you referenced were speaking out of emotion. The only "observation" I have for them, other than what I wrote in the "Dr. Brian is right" thread (if you haven't yet seen it), is that reacting with emotion only causes more damage. Posts which are seen as inflammatory are then reacted to, the author in turn reacts, and it goes up in flames. When someone makes remarks that invoke strong emotions/reactions, insults will fly. It is unfortunate, and I certainly don't like to see it happen. My hope with providing you what I saw, was to avoid this happening again, not condemn everyone for insulting each other. From my point of view, what seemed to start all this was not when you posted your views on Nazis, or even the reaction from members that caused (people who took offense not at your views, but at the way in which you presented them). To me, what started all this was the perception that you were questioning the morality of members of the forum because they were asking you not to make extreme political statements and/or because they liked to play or roleplay Germans in the game. Yes, I most definitely could "lecture" people on how it isn't nice to insult each other, but what would that accomplish? My house isn't made of bulletproof glass, so I am not about to cast stones. What I hope(d) to do was to root out the cause of this latest rash of flame wars and maybe help steer people away from starting them again. I know; a possibly futile hope. I'm not trying to say that you are to "blame" for all of this, not in the least. I think people have sometimes been childish and offensive to you. However, I liken making statements regarding people's views on or the political issues surrounding the Holocaust and Nazi Germany to lighting the fuse on a powder keg; it may start out slow, but inevitably it blows up. The flames from this explosion will go out if people (everyone, including you and I) stop fanning them. Please, let's not light any more fuses. -Scorp -
Lindan, and others, Please realize that we are dealing with a person who is new to this forum, and has extremely strong personal beliefs. I don't think he realizes how his statements and style of communication affects others, nor the reasoning behind the reactions. Engaging in a flame war or in parody will potentially only lead to one or more people no longer posting here. I don't think anyone wants that. I would suggest that people try informing others when their statements are offensive, and trying to educate, rather than reacting with strong emotion. I know it is tough, since so many of us have personal ties to these issues, but try to remember that this is not the forum to discuss them. If we give new members the chance to adapt to the forum, and educate them on what the forum is all about, we may be able to avoid the flame wars we have been seeing here lately. Either that, or they prove that themselves trolls (they always do), or prove they have permanent chips on their shoulders, and leave. (And no, Dr. Brian, that was not directed at you) -Scorp

Who wrote this "fuzzy logic?"
Scorpion replied to Dr. Brian's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
Dr. Brian, Please allow me to make a few humble observations. The members of this online community are, in general, intelligent and well-mannered. This is a very diverse forum, with people coming from all walks of life, from many different countries (what is the count at now?). Everyone has their own system of beliefs, and they vary quite wildly. However, it is somewhat of an unspoken rule that this is not the correct forum for educating others in personal moral codes. The more extreme a statement, signature, or quotation seems, the more extreme the reaction to such will be. In other words, this place is not about who was right or wrong in the past, or any other ethical or moral debate. Occasionally, it is about the accuracy of historical data or facts, but in general, this forum is for discussing a game. People play and discuss their favorite games for entertainment: Not to engage in a moral debate (which is something they may be playing games to get away from thinking about in the first place!). Someone may very well be right in their personal beliefs about World War II or the powers involved, and feel an obligation to enlighten others about it; however, that sort of education is not appropriate for this forum. Now, you seem like an intelligent person. You must realize that if one person with a strong sense of right and wrong and personal ethics is involved in several different discussions which degenerate into flamewars, when the average thread has no hostility in it whatsoever, that a correlation can be drawn. As the old saying goes, where there is smoke, there is fire. I would humbly suggest that you examine whether or not this forum is the kind of place that you want to be posting in. Your .sig, your profile, and your statements of strong personal belief will always be inflammatory here. Not because people disagree with you, mind you - you seem to assume that if someone feels your statements were inappropriate, they must disagree with you. If your personal beliefs force you to speak out against evil, this forum may simply not be the right place for you. I think that there is an unspoken rule to that effect here (it may even be spoken somewhere, or more properly, written). No one is asking you to 'fall into line,' only to speak out in forums where it is appropriate, if you feel the need to speak out. Does that seem reasonable to you? I truly apologize for continuing an OT tangent. Back to AI: Dr. Brian, in computer gaming, 'AI' is a general term for the programming behind the actions of a computer opponent. I think that most of us are aware of the distinctions between the gaming term and its original use. It isn't that the term is being used incorrectly: It simply has two meanings now. Cheers! -Scorp [This message has been edited by Scorpion (edited 08-26-2000).] -
