  1. Disaster@work, have you by chance read 'Clear and present Danger' by Tom Clancy? Because that is persicely what happens (U.S. getting involved with teh cartel. Very good read if I do say so (and who's gonna stop me ). Fionn, you brought up some good topics. And I must say that for the most part I am in agreeance. ------------------ The worst part of any conflict is peacekeeping, it is the time when only one side may fire.
  2. in that case, i think my post should have been read through a tad more carefully, as that matter was mentioned ------------------ The worst part of any conflict is peacekeeping, it is the time when only one side may fire.
  3. DYOs? ------------------ The worst part of any conflict is peacekeeping, it is the time when only one side may fire.
  4. Well, since I know nothig about this book, i came in here assuming that the title was describing a cominc ending to a CM battle....how wrong I was! Have a good 'un ------------------ The worst part of any conflict is peacekeeping, it is the time when only one side may fire.
  5. Ahem, I have four letters that can end this whole discussion...no, it's not that word <text> CMHQ </text>...That's right folks, if you surf on over there you'll find a downloadable grid...there is no on/off function for it, but that's all explained at the sight. If you do want a grid though, I suggest you head over there right now. have a good 'un ------------------ The worst part of any conflict is peacekeeping, it is the time when only one side may fire.
  6. Well..noones payed much attention to the cartel as of late...if they get their men (yes, they are sexist) to stop snuffing their stuff, they may be formidable...after all, when you fire from the hip since age 5, you have to get good at it by age 25 As for thes best army? (I'm serious now), I think the British may have it. They are tough sods. Not to mention that their field weapon loadout is better then that of most other major countires (like U.S., Canada, Russia, etc.). Besides which they get yearly training in Ireland.... If you want the best special force? Then it's definitely the SAS, i'm not sure what the SAS down-under in Australia is like, but they are probably close to British SAS. (Frankly, I don't see what's so hot about Delta Force...actually, I see them as pretty crappy ) ------------------ The worst part of any conflict is peacekeeping, it is the time when only one side may fire.
  7. 'Why?' You ask? very simple my freinds, and here are the reasons; 1)-They don't need a fancy-arse computer that was built in the last 3 weeks. Look at Normandy '44, it just came out, and what are it's requirements? A 486 (not MHz, but whatever those old 486 boxes ran at), and it's a vary fine game..or so I'm told 2)-There will always be a thinking gamer. Seriously, I'm sure everyone wants to have some mindless fun now and again, but how long could you really go with out a game that challenged your mind--and not just to find the next key? 3)-No plot to build. In an FPS, RPG, RTS, you name it, for the game to be held together, there has to be a story. Wargames will never suffer from that. The bloody history of our race provides enough storys for thousands of games, and it really doesn't even matter if those stories get re-used, because the game may have a different perspective on it. lots of WW2 games have been done before, but look at how CM still manages to make it great. 4)-No hype. this may not make sense at first, but let me explain. FPS games get the most hype right? Well when a game gets hyped and hyped, more often then not the outcome is underwhelming. Wargames, while wargamers anticipate them, are not overly hyped. This makes it so that all the game has to do to be great, is be good. because nothing more is expected of it. 5)-Long lives. Sure, CM may breach the walls in replayability [is that even a word?], but there is so much that can be done with wargames that it's almost never boring. Here's an example of one of the most popular FPS around, Half-Life. Sure, it's still getting played, but how many people are actually running through the original story again? Thousands of people uninstalled HL after they beat it, why? Nothing more to do. The only thing that got them to re-install HL, was the user-made MODs. Without them, Half-Life would be very, very dead right now. While games like CM have huge fan bases, and big MODs, those are not, and will never be a nicessity to keep enjoying the game. Force altering (like 25%+ To Allies) gives Cm a long life on it's own. But then with the wonderful map editor included this game would be good for about 4 years. And with the Random Battle Generator! i don't think this game will ever die (especially with CM2 comming long before 4 years is up...I hope ). Wargames simply cannot get old if the company is smart about how they release their game. 6)-Good communities. Wargame communities seem to be the nicest around. you can go onto an FPS forum 9or almost any other genre) and be bombarded with cussing galore. Some of those people are just plain weird! Wargamers however, are not like this..maybe it's because they use their brains when they play[?]. 7)-Graphics...seriously, who needs them? yes it makes CM like a wedding cake in a funeral (funeral being the polly based wargames around), but even so, wargames aside from Cm and Close Combat don't need graphics. Therefor companies don't have to worry about the latest colour scheme that computers can support, or how to get the perfect metallic reflection on the infanty's rifles. And this therefore gives them more time to work on gameplay, what really matters in games. Well, I think that's the end of my rant. if you've stuck with me, thanks for your time . i'd appreciate any and all comments and/or counter arguments. Have a good 'un. ------------------ The worst part of any conflict is peacekeeping, it is the time when only one side may fire. 8. Is there a way to toggle smoke on/off, because maybe the default is off? ------------------ The worst part of any conflict is peacekeeping, it is the time when only one side may fire.
  9. LOL, Fionn, ever hear of a copywrite? ------------------ The worst part of any conflict is peacekeeping, it is the time when only one side may fire.
  10. I don't see a picture..I only see a broken image icon..Can someone tell me what I'm supposed to see, please? ------------------ The worst part of any conflict is peacekeeping, it is the time when only one side may fire.
  11. I've played both sides of Chance Encounter and neither time gotten a flamer. As far as i know there are only in the Valley of Trouble scenerio. In the demo anyways. ------------------ The worst part of any conflict is peacekeeping, it is the time when only one side may fire.
  12. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Their wargaming guy seems to have a lot on the ball - I've been waiting for him to notice Combat Mission. I guess he finally did.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Actually, if you search through some back issues, you will find in the first paragraph of one of his columns that he was going devote his column to it, but it missed it's ship date, so he would do it sometime in early 2000. Well, mid-2000 is just as good for me ------------------ The worst part of any conflict is peacekeeping, it is the time when only one side may fire. 13. I talked to the wargame guy at PC gamer, and he told me this; "Watch for the next issue, wherein I review CM with great enthusiasm.....I agree totally with your response to the game -- it is fresh, addictive, and very exciting." PC Gamer is really the one publication I trust most for their reviews, and judging from what he said, I'm thinking that he will be giving CM something in the 90% range. While I don't make a habit of pedalling(sp?) other peoples publications, I do feel that the comming issue of PC Gamer will be worth the $8 canadian for the review. ($10 canadian if you get the addition with the CD). I am defenitly getting this one as soon as it hits the shelves. ------------------ The worst part of any conflict is peacekeeping, it is the time when only one side may fire.
  14. It's simple, the ones you can give orders to arent dead Seriously though, if your looking from too high to see if they're face up or down, how can you see a pool of blood? i belive that you will also notice, when dead, their limbs are in more of a star shape. And don't forget, that it will only be dead if there is one troop icon there and not 2 or 3.....that's all the info I have...unless you want an option to remove the dead from the battle field...which would make sense to me.... ------------------ The worst part of any conflict is peacekeeping, it is the time when only one side may fire. 15. A) From what I've played of the demo, unless you pile your forces in the middle, there's no room on the sides of the map to flank you! ------------------ The worst part of any conflict is peacekeeping, it is the time when only one side may fire.

  17. This is my first wargame...but I think I can guess. I've always been fascinated by wargames (but always turned off by their huge scale and turn-base system), for me, the draw was dealing with stuff like men who would do what you told them if you treated them poorly, and the excercise for your brain while plotting all those tactics....It's true that wars are horrendous. When you think about it, Saving Private ryan was gory, yes, but I don't belive it showed all of what could/would happen in war. I mean, it showed a guy geting hit with 30mm, but he lost his head and limbs. had SPR director descided he had been hit in midsection, it would have been a lot more gory. When the guy held his 'sticky' for too long, he blew, but there was almost no blood, just mainly smoke. Even gory movies like that shrowed the true atrocities of war. And great war movies that showed the tactics like 'A Bridge too Far', only showed that part, almsot so blood in that movie. I'm sorry I've gone off in a rant like this. it's just that seriously, when i was little, i thought war was cool...i really did...now that i'm older i see why it isnt. wargames only provide the strategy, the closest they coem to associating with the men is the morale...I'm thinking the next step for wargaming will be one of two things. 1)make them gory as heck...i don't really think this is a good option though for obvious reasons. teh other and more likely I think is 2)associate more with the men. for example, a guy gets killed by an enemy rifle squad. his budy breaks and runs firing at the enemy, while he may do some damage he will most likely loose his life. Showing what happend to men in war is what i think the next step should be. ------------------ The worst part of any conflict is peacekeeping, it is the time when only one side may fire.
  18. Basically all I know of German is that the negative word goes at the end of the scentence...or so i was told by a guy who spoke German.... ------------------ The worst part of any conflict is peacekeeping, it is the time when only one side may fire.
  19. Mortar=5m behind 2 story Tank=0=10m behind another 2 story buildings=110-120m appart he said it all in his post. ------------------ The worst part of any conflict is peacekeeping, it is the time when only one side may fire.

  21. This topic reminds me of something, while playing the demo, I was Amis, and looking over the situation one of my Lieutenants was in. As I scanned the info bar i noticed his portrait, and there it was as obvious to me as why pickles and sourkraut don't go together. On the helmet of the guy in the portrait was Captains bars! I checked his name, yep he was an Lt....And there were those captains bars.... Is this a mistake in the game, or did my computer just mess up? Or is it a bug that's being fixed? Anyone help? Spook, tell your freind that he made good choices for the new portraits, but what about the guys in Tour of Duty TV show? Lt. goldman would make a cool portrait IMO. ------------------ The worst part of any conflict is peacekeeping, it is the time when only one side may fire.
  22. maybe it went through the buildings windows, like in that post in the "Funniest thing in CM" thread? ------------------ The worst part of any conflict is peacekeeping, it is the time when only one side may fire.
  23. I am Canadian, while I'm a west coaster, I still have never heard a Newfie say that. Sure, I say 'eh', But if I was shouting commands I doubt I would say 'Hold your fire, eh!' While i may use it on other commands, it takes common sense as to which they would be used on. Mensch is also correct in that we do not sound like British or American people. So let me just say that I hope they have another Canadian to do our commands P.S., yes I am new to the boards, this is my first post ------------------ The worst part of any conflict is peacekeeping, it is the time when only one side may fire.
