Also, there are too many things to list so I'll just add one more fun fact on the "SS all over the damn place" post Argentina was a popular havens for war criminals, many of whom were aided by ODESSA, an organization of SS men set up to aid them. ------------------ "Far better it is To dare mighty things... Just a few more facts: Many Nazi war criminals were tried & most were convicted; however, U.S. intelligence agencies did conspired to reduce many of the sentences in return for their help in the new war againt communism. Operation Paper Clip was a deliberate program by the U.S. Military that brought about 1,600 Nazi scientists to the U.S. to work on various projects. U.S. & British officials wanted to investigate the Soviets for the Katyn massacre, but the Soviets kept that incident off the agenda. BOTTOM LINE: "Justice", like so many times before in history took a back seat to "National Security" & politics. ------------------ "Far better it is To dare mighty things... PBEM opponents quiting mid-game
Grobdeutschland replied to General Petrovsky's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
I'm still waiting for 2 guys to reply to my "Did you give up?" e-mails. I only like PBEM games, so this is something I see alot. This sucks big b/c my CM time is limited & I rather not waste it! I try to play the same people over & have developed trusted friendships, however, I'm always on the lookout for more competition. If someones "quits" unofficially I'll never play with them again. ------------------ "Far better it is To dare mighty things... I agree with I/O 100%, but I felt it was best to let Commish decide for himself. I always said...that I have no desire to kill anyone, however, my duty is to close with & engage the enemy. This I would do as a professional, not as a killer. Is there a difference? I think so. The enemy is trained/motivated to win, & so am I. We should not forget why the US Army exist: To DETER war or, if deterrence fails, to fight & win wars. Yes, Yes, I know that's not how it always is or ends up! But that's why I'm Soldier, b/c I beleive in what I do. It feels good to know you've helped someone, regardless of politics. ------------------ "Far better it is To dare mighty things... I like Mr. Trotter's section & I feel his reviews are on the money. The Colonel is just a wargaming title much like ours & "World greatest gamer" is a statement of how much he loves wargames, IMHO. Why read into it so much? He did nothing wrong, however, I can understand why Mr. Hawkings was angered. I read his letter & was touched by it. Mr. Trotter was also & that's why he apologized. ------------------ "Far better it is To dare mighty things... Then to take rank with Those poor, timid spirits Who know neither Victory nor defeat." Love that halftrack! Keep it up. ------------------ "Far better it is To dare mighty things... Then to take rank with Those poor, timid spirits Who know neither Victory nor defeat." Theodore Roosevelt 1899 -
One way to remember things is to "retain the essential, to forget the nonessential" (anyone care to guess who said that-easy one) meaning (to me): just try to remember the basics & add more to it as you go. If you need to know the nonessentials details you can look it up & by remembering the big stuff you should be able find the info much faster in your reference books. After a while you just start remembering the small stuff too. Also, never read anything you don't like unless it's for school or something. I can never remember anything for long from a book that did not interest me. ------------------ "Far better it is To dare mighty things... John, if you place the 20mm at the edge of a tree line it will be easy to spot, however if you put it back far enough that it's LOS is dim blue to it's fields of fire then it will be hard to spot. Works for me, but I have never tested it in a mock setup.
-
I agree w/joe. It's hard to find small units in woods. At night the muzzle flash will give it away but during daylight & in combat this is very hard. MGs ARE too easy to spot, to a point - in building MGs are easier to spot b/c they stand out more & there only so many openings it can be in that offer a good field of fire. But in woods a MG is harder to see...I've attack wooded areas in training w/the army & from 200m I could not see a well placed M60 MG. Also the fire from other small arms coming from the same general direction makes it even harder. Now before everyone starts crying that the noise of these SQD weapons gives them away, you must realize that you & half your men are firing also, while the SQD leader is yelling movement orders to the other half to close/flank/retreat whatever...since most SQD open up ambushes w/their heavy weapons 1st (laws, claymores, & in this case MGs) there is a chance to pinpoint the MG. If anyone who saw it lived, the MG will then be made knew to all & will be at the top of the SQD's ****list. So it's easy to see why the MG's should be very hard to spot, but it also can be easy to spot depending on the conditions. This can be modeled in CM & it may well be, but as of now it does seems a bit off. I STILL FEEL CM IS A GREAT GAME! ------------------ "Far better it is To dare mighty things... Too much info for me to give ya, plus it's always changing. Just dial 411 & ask for the # of the US Army recruiter in your city. They are looking for troops left & right, so you should be rolling in the mud by summer. Just make it clear to them that you wanna be a snake eater (SF). -

The SF "school" is broken up into phases, which are referred to as Hellgate 1, 2, 3, etc...The course is one year long & at the last hellgate the SF wanna-be's have to act like real SF'ers & parachute into a "foreign country" (somewhere in the carolinas) & help the local rebellion (82 airborne & some other units at bragg) succeed against their oppressors (82 airborne). Anyways, at this hellgate is where you really feel like you've gone to hell & the do or die standard set by the cadre really separates the crazy brave from the phony tough...little sleep, food, & constant humping w/huge packs will wear down anyone. Sorry for rambling on, but looking back & thinking about it always makes me wanna blab I was a member of the "rebellion" & it was the best 3 weeks (felt like 10) of training I've ever had...those SF guys have lots of heart & they know their ****. -

Look, Commish, If your for real just join Army/marines as infantry then try out for the many hardcore units out there, SF, Delta, Navy seals, etc..they are always looking for guys willing to kill/die, trust me, you'll get lots of "action" in those units. OR maybe after sucking the mud for a few years while trying to enter one of these Elite units or simply breaking one bone too many during your 5th shot at Hellgate 3...you may not want to be a killer anymore. The choice is yours. Good luck. ------------------ "Far better it is To dare mighty things... Then to take rank with Those poor, timid spirits Who know neither Victory nor defeat." Armor quality formula?
Grobdeutschland replied to Grobdeutschland's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
Thanks guys & yes dumrox, thats how I understood it. Now before someone gives me conflicting info I'm outta here. -
I have done a search & have interpreted that 85% armor quality means that the armor is really only 85% as thick as listed when determining penetration (clam down Capt), i.e...100mm @ 85% quality = 85mm. Is that correct or am I lost? Can someone please clarify. Thanks. ------------------ "Far better it is To dare mighty things... I always thought meeting engagements were an equal point affair & the other battles, probe, attack, etc...give the defender the points displayed & x's that # using a formula for the other player. It's in the book under QB's. ------------------ "Far better it is To dare mighty things... Then to take rank with Those poor, timid spirits Who know neither Victory nor defeat." Little Gems of ideas for CM2 thread
Grobdeutschland replied to PeterNZer's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
A shadeing tool would be great...something like...put a "LOS" marker on a spot & the whole map is shaded to that spot! COOL Idea! I like all the others ideas as well, but this will really speed up setup times. So would having unit info on the buy screen. ------------------ "Far better it is To dare mighty things... There wouldn't be a 180 pg manual if...
Grobdeutschland replied to a topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
Look! I hate being the teacher's pet , but you guys at BTS are just great. You take pride in your product & it shows in everything you do, from the manual to the support we get on this site, & everything in between. I don't always agree w/ya but I like the fact that you actually take the time to explain why you've done something. Before CM I never... ever... bought...any game without A) waiting for reviews or B)being able to return the productfor a refund, I just had enough of the half-assed efforts. But when I read up on BTS at thier web-site I got the game ASAP & I've never looked back. BTW I've read the manual from cover to cover about 3 times & I want a 300 pager next. ------------------ "Far better it is To dare mighty things...
