  1. , , and then . Oh, and a , too! Lucy, you got some 'splaining to do! ------------------ Canada: Where men were men, unless they were horses. -Dudley Do-right
  2. IIRC, shellholes are not affected by FOW since they are 'terrain'. Jeff gives a good explanation why this is not really a problem, anyway. ------------------ Canada: Where men were men, unless they were horses. -Dudley Do-right
  3. Does the infantry TacAI ever shoot at infantry sound contacts? I was noticing last night that sometimes AT guns and AFVs will target vehicle sound contacts, but could not recall ever seeing this happen with infantry. If this does not currently happen, could it be patched/included in CM2? I could definitely see it happening more often with less experienced 'trigger-happy' troops in low-visibility. ------------------ Canada: Where men were men, unless they were horses. -Dudley Do-right
  4. Only way I've seen a longer map in QB is to pick a small map with low points for forces (it will be really small area-wise, though). The map size is relative to points, so a small map will be narrower than a medium or large map for the same forces. I haven't seen anything that affects the map length as much as the width. ------------------ Canada: Where men were men, unless they were horses. -Dudley Do-right
  5. There's a pic on this site (last pic, about 2/3 down) that shows a Panther G with some equipment on the TC cupola. Is this one of the IR sets? http://www.shadowsfolly.com/WWII/Germany/PzKpfwV.htm ------------------ Canada: Where men were men, unless they were horses. -Dudley Do-right
  6. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Philistine: I think people are being a bit harsh on Squad Leader. Yes it is using the name Squad Leader, but IMHO it's not so much to "fool" people in to buying the game as it is using a name that they have in their title stable that is a good name that fits the product.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> What burns my butt about it is that there have been several other AH titles that have been computerized more or less faithfully. Wooden Ships & Iron Men, Rise and Fall Of the 3rd Reich, Diplomacy, etc (granted, not all AH games came from Hasbro). A combination of this with the "politcal correctness" (aka "revisionist history") in the game ruins it for me. ------------------ Canada: Where men were men, unless they were horses. -Dudley Do-right
  7. Both types of mods (graphic and sound) replace original game files with the exception of winter vehicle/infantry mods. However, adding a new winter mod will overwrite a previous one for the same vehicle. The good news is that you can always copy the originals from the CD if you want to "un-mod" CM. ------------------ Canada: Where men were men, unless they were horses. -Dudley Do-right
  8. I would rather see distance displayed when issuing move commands just like with the LOS tool. ------------------ Canada: Where men were men, unless they were horses. -Dudley Do-right
  9. This is a FOW issue that has been brought up a couple of times before. I have posted about it once or twice. I think it comes down to the fact that dead units (not just infantry) are immune to FOW. Coincidentally (boy, that's the second time today I've said that), I had this happen last night to a German HT that got KO'ed by a mortar (it was shooting at something else, btw ). I knew the HT was there as it had recently reversed out of my LOS and had become a cross symbol. Suddenly, without moving any of my units, it "appeared" with an abandoned label. NO friendlies had LOS to it. ------------------ Canada: Where men were men, unless they were horses. -Dudley Do-right
  10. Coincidence or a well-orchestrated conspiracy? I saw this in my email today: Survey: Longer Reserve Duty Irks Civilian Bosses http://www.military.com/Content/MoreContent?file=FL_survey_trimble ------------------ Canada: Where men were men, unless they were horses. -Dudley Do-right
  11. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by XPav: Writing hate filled emailed to the support mailboxes at Hasbro and Microprose doesn't help either.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Writing moderately toned email expressing disappointment in their products is very helpful, IMO. If no one tells Hasbro (or any company, for that matter) that you are willing to spend your money elsewhere (to get the products you want), how will they ever know? Lousy sales might be interpreted as lack of interest in wargames in general! Constructive criticism and product feedback should be welcome to any company. ------------------ Canada: Where men were men, unless they were horses. -Dudley Do-right
  12. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by R-Man: Play until overcome by sleep or double vision.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Sleep is GAMEY!!!!! ------------------ Canada: Where men were men, unless they were horses. -Dudley Do-right
  13. "Shots" and "bursts" are simply convenient lables to apply to the way CM models small arms fire. Each "shot" can represent a very few rounds (like for a sniper or a 20mm cannon) or a long automatic weapon burst (like a MG42). It is neccessary to do it this way since the game engine calculates small arms fire every few seconds and not continuously like you would see in Real Lifeâ„¢. Call it what you will, it still represents several second's worth of fire from whatever weapon is in question. ------------------ Canada: Where men were men, unless they were horses. -Dudley Do-right
  14. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Ellros: In today's CDmag online newsletter, they say they will be having a review of Computer SL up on the site in the next few days. They have barely described what it is supposed to be like however. Guess we'll have to wait and see what they say. -Rob<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Hee, hee. I did a search on CDmag's website and found this (dated 7/15/1998): http://www.cdmag.com/Home/home.html?article=/articles/013/063/squad_leader_dead.html Rough release date, indeed! ------------------ Canada: Where men were men, unless they were horses. -Dudley Do-right
  15. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by CavScout: 6th Infantry Div? Is that an active duty unit? The only active duty units I know of are: 1st Armor Division 1st Cavalry Division 1st Infantry Division 2nd Infantry Division 3rd Infantry Division (Mechanized) 4th Infantry Division 10th Mountain Division (Light) 25th Infantry Division 82nd Airborne Division 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) On a side note, as I understand it only the National Guard has combat arms units, the Army Reserve is service and support for the most part and has very few, if any, combat units. <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> IIRC, 6 ID is only about Bde strength right now? This is one of those things that looks good on paper (hey, the Air Nat Guard does it!) but works out horribly in practice. The ANG can do it because a lot of their troops work in the aviation industry (how many NG Abrams tankers have a day job driving tanks?) and they typically practice their warfighting skills more (from what I've seen, at least). ------------------ Canada: Where men were men, unless they were horses. -Dudley Do-right
  16. Longest nonstop CM time - 11 Hrs. Longest nonstop PC game time ever - 22.5 Hrs playing Sid Meier's Civilization (1st time I ever played it, and I was much younger then) ------------------ Canada: Where men were men, unless they were horses. -Dudley Do-right [This message has been edited by IntelWeenie (edited 09-14-2000).]
  17. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Juardis: Does the M5A1 0.50 have the same firepower as the 0.50 weps team? If so, then 600% more ammo for 66% more cost seems very nice except you cannot hide a track in a building . Conversely, IIRC, there was some discussion earlier about the German HMG42s on different platforms and their different firepowers - something to do with the way they were mounted maybe. So maybe they don't have the same firepower. <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> I know there's a big difference in the effectiveness of the remote-controlled MG42s (Hetzer, late StuGs). I don't know if the FP is lower, but the range is a lot shorter. ------------------ Canada: Where men were men, unless they were horses. -Dudley Do-right
  18. Lowering your viewpoint to 2 or 3 and/or swinging the camera to not show too many units (right before clicking GO) seems to help when there's a bunch of units and/or lots of smoke. ------------------ Canada: Where men were men, unless they were horses. -Dudley Do-right

  20. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Jeff Heidman: However, the reality is that the US did NOT execute a Germany first policy anyway. We went after Japan pretty hard as soon as we had the forces to do it, and we invested heavily in creating the forces that could only be useful against Japan even before Pearl Harbour. Jeff Heidman<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> From the Encyclopedia Brittanica website: <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Japan's entry into the war terminated the nonbelligerency of the United States. The three weeks' conference, named Arcadia, that Roosevelt, Churchill, and their advisers opened in Washington, D.C., on Dec. 22, 1941, reassured the British about U.S. maintenance of the "Europe first" principle and also produced two plans: a tentative one, code-named "Sledgehammer," for the buildup of an offensive force in Great Britain, in case it should be decided to invade France; and another, code-named "Super-Gymnast," for combining a British landing behind the German forces in Libya (already planned under the code name "Gymnast") with a U.S. landing near Casablanca on the Atlantic coast of Morocco.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> IIRC, this was later affirmed in the Casablanca conference. ------------------ Canada: Where men were men, unless they were horses. -Dudley Do-right
  21. An excerpt from an e-mail I sent to Hasbro: <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>I have just read a review of your upcoming game "Squad Leader" on Gamesdomain.com. Assuming that the review is not in error, I must say it has quashed any interest I had in this game. I am a long-time player of the original Avalon Hill wargames "Squad Leader" and "Advanced Squad Leader". I had high hopes that when Hasbro purchased AH's games that a serious effort would be made to produce computer versions that were true to the originals. However, it seems that is not the case. Instead, it seems to be just another cookie cutter game aimed at the general public and not the more demanding standards of the general wargaming community. However, I have discovered a competing product called "Combat Mission" that will occupy my time once spent playing Squad Leader. If your company intends to continue publishing computer wargames, I would ask that your programming teams and their management take a hard look at what has gone into the development of this game. No frills, no fluff, just a fun, easily playable (my 5-year old son already understands the interface) and historically accurate wargame. I wish there were more games like it on the market.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> VERY disappointed. Didn't even download the demo. ------------------ Canada: Where men were men, unless they were horses. -Dudley Do-right [This message has been edited by IntelWeenie (edited 09-14-2000).]
  22. OK, Fernando, you've done it now! Be prepared to get "can you do this mod?" messages from now to eternity! Let me be the first: can you do something similar with some Shermans? Really nice looking mods! ------------------ Canada: Where men were men, unless they were horses. -Dudley Do-right
  23. While we're here, what about the price for M3A1/M5A1 HTs? If long-range .50 cals are your cup 'o tea, they are a steal at only 42 points for the 250rounds of ammo! (not to mention an extra .30cal and ability to carry full squads) ------------------ Canada: Where men were men, unless they were horses. -Dudley Do-right

  25. Darkfrog_uk, I'll my answer is A. Yes, that's my final answer. It is in the game, but not as a separate unit. It is inherent in most Brit squads. In case you're curious, the name Bren stemms from the design's origins. It was based on a design by Brno (in Czechoslovakia), modified and produced by Enfield. ------------------ Canada: Where men were men, unless they were horses. -Dudley Do-right
