I have seen tanks that were bogged down eventually work their way free.

THere is a thread in the main CM baord that has statistics on this very issue - mostly chances of bogging under certian condition, but also chance of getting free if you do bog. Seems the bottom line is go everywhere backwards!!
 2.
quote:
Originally posted by windstarz: I haven't found any version 1.05 aar's. Where are they?

the only one I know of is the most recent (unfinished) Fionn/Claymore DYO scenario at CMHQ.
 3.
quote:
Originally posted by Lochar: I just finished demo (btw have already placed order for real deal, you brought a turn based retiree back into the fold) and had some questions/comments that didnt see in search(unless cant find right keyword) Anyways you have a split squad feature, is there a regroup squad one as well? Yes - If the two teams begin a turn with their bases overlapped, they will rejoin into one squad. And would it be possible in the future to even have a regroup squad comprised of a mix of others? Maybe in the future, but not now. And note that splitting squads reduces moral and if one team is eliminated, the moral hit is permanent. Also during a demo I noticed a few things which was curious about. 1. Surrending, if your unit surrenders and you kill the enemy nearby him and he comes back as a slightly demoralized unit, is there a way to get weapon back? No. But the bad guys don't get the points for a captured unit if you get them back. So if you DO rescue them, send them to the rear. 2. And not sure if this was a bug or the way things are but noticed 2nd time around on demo. Some of my units would move to spot assigned (ie mainly in house so could see enemy) but then would walk back to orig spot in house, also other units in house would walk outside to shoot at enemy. Never noticed that in first demo when played Lochar

The units are responding to the conditions they "see" - if you sent them into the open and they see the enemy, they may take cover. On the other hand, they may go "Audie Murphy" and assault the enemy. The program does a pretty fair job of making it seem like your units are "real" people.
 4.
quote:
Originally posted by goonch: I did a search first. No luck. How do you view an After Action Report which is posted on CMHQ?

Fire up the version of CMBO that the movie was created in (lately, version 1.05, but many AAR's were created with previous versions) and then load the file like you were playing by email. (THis first involves saving the movie file locally) That said, I find that learning to play CM by watching other's movie files is like learning to play chess by watching others play. It can work, but only when you're already pretty good. I learn FAR more by reading the thoughts and intentions of the players, and their thoughts after THEY watch the movie.

I admit it. I checked. I think I'll go see if "gullible" is in the dictionary... (N.B: I DIDN'T believe there was a lawsuit, but I DID believe someone ginned up a faux website...)

 7. As the 'zook team aims ..and aims ... and aims ... "Oh don't make any effort to shoot the damn tank, Corporal!! If God wanted that tank dead He'd have miracled it dead by now!!!!"
 8. It's probably not worth worrying about, but I HAVE found a glitch in "Withdraw" - you can only withdraw from the enemy LINES, not the enemy. Although that's usually the same thing, a PBEM at the moment has our lines rotated 90 degrees. So I can't withdraw "from" the enemy, only "along" him
 9.
quote:
Originally posted by Elijah Meeks: Though I agree with your pool analogy, I take issue with your relation of it to combat.

You're right - I should never have compared the game of pool to the game of Combat Mission.....
 10.
quote:
Originally posted by wwb_99: But also note that if properly sited, an infantry defense can be designed to roll backwards. Also note that one should be retreating onto their HMGs, not leaving them out in front. WWB

This reminds of back when I used to play pool - an mediocre player would comment to a highly skilled player "Of course you beat me - all your shots were easy!!" (The reasoning is torturous - Playing well means never having to make a sacrificial command decision...)
 11.
quote:
Originally posted by Bullethead: "The only rightly justified vehicles ..." Before you all get carried away with wish lists, I don't think BTS should add any vehicles until they solve this rightly justified bug.

Especially since some people consider right OR left justification "gamey".
 12.
quote:
Originally posted by Peterk: > He would be quick to say something funny > like "you are assimilated" Come to think of it...that's pretty much all he ever said.

Not true! He was a ... being of great depth and complexity. He would often mix it up with a "Assimilated." or sometimes a "[Whoever] is assimilated." I get misty when I remember my time ...
 13.
quote:
Originally posted by jackson44dday: Hey, a newbie here. Just wondering..... what are spoilers to a mission???

What they said. I just wanted to point out (on the off chance it's not obvious) that it's perfectly fine to discuss a scenario - you should just warn people - a nice way to do it is to put something like: SPOILER====SPOILER====SPOILER====SPOILER ahead of the scenario information - that way if someone blunders into the thread, they won't accidently read something they don't want to.
 14.
quote:
Originally posted by Mark IV: Every single person who has ever seen or played CM wants this. It cannot be done now, but maybe in the future, is the official word.

And we're all saving our PBEM turns in case it ever happens!!
 15.
quote:
Originally posted by Sharpie: I just gotta tell someone who will appreciate it…. I just played and won my first ever PBEM 88 to 12. What a great game!

Would it still be a great game if you'd lost 88 to 12?

 19.
quote:
Originally posted by Warphead-: Happy birthday!

Happy birthday - I can't believe nobody's asked you how old you are!?!
 20.
quote:
Originally posted by ScoutPL: I've never read an account of the day to day fighting that really did a good job of laying out how a battalion advanced from day to day. If anyone knows of one let me know.

This may not be what you need (in particular it doesn't discuss a battalion) but at: http://carlisle-www.army.mil/usamhi/DL/chron.htm there are a number of day-by-day narratives of a Cavalry Recon Squadron that I've been reading lately (and I imagine you already know about them, but what the heck).
 21.
quote:
Originally posted by Pillar: Often if she phones me from elsewhere, one of the first things she'll say is "Are you playing your Combat Mission?"

Elena (my wife) calls CM the "chicken game". I have no earthly idea what she means (but I'm pretty sure it's pejorative). She's from Spain, but that doesn't help me much....
 22.
quote:
Originally posted by jackson44dday: What is sound contact and how is it imprtant in the game??

I was waiting for someone more knowledgeable to post, but here goes. A sound contact indicates that your troops have heard what they think is a [tank, inf squad, light armor, etc] and they are pretty sure it's about where the sound contact object is. This lets you know that one of those is around and is generally in that direction, but be aware that the actual location of the thing making the noise may be quite far (as in 10's of meters) from where it is indicated. Predictably, a tank going "fast" makes more noise (and easier to "sound" spot) than one "move"-ing. And so on. They are important in that they let you know roughly where adn what something is - but don't be mislead.
 23.
quote:
Originally posted by russellmz: parodies of saving private ryan and thin red line.

these were excellent - they hit BOTH nails right on the head. Thanks for posting them.
 24.
quote:
Originally posted by barrold713: Air support can be very effective and while the lack of control may be frustrating for some, I really like the level of uncertainty that has been incorporated in the game.

I have played only one scenario with FB and it turned what would almost certainly have been a big loss into a tie. I too appreciate the extra bit of "nail-biting" introduced by the "where the hell is my air support" factor (as well as the "how the hell could you miss him, you miserable hack" corollary). My opponent, on the other hand, is thouroughly down on air power, calling it the "Hand of God" in that (he feels) it either works or not for the side with it, and claiming that there is no response from the defender.
 25.
quote:

Holy moley! I just launched Netscape and the Op downloaded OK, so I thought it was IE5's fault. Even the fans of CM give better "customer" support than most companies!! (Incidentally, IE5 DOES change the file extension from cmb to htm - at least on my machine). Muchas gracias.
