2.
quote:
Originally posted by Gyrene: Are there even any differences between playing the Poles and the Brits? Gyrene

Funny you should put it this way - I was playing a competely random QB against the computer and drew the Brits. Fair enough. I began the fight and worked my way through about 15-20 turns (i.e more than half way through) when I noticed one of the Brits saying "Ya Daku! - Ya Daku!", or something to that effect - I'd been playing Poles the whole way through. That's my story....
 3.
quote:
Originally posted by Cooper: When the enemy doesn't know you are there there isn't the pressure of oncoming fire to throw of your units aim/ability to see.

I've been saving this for just such an emergency - Testimony of Lt. Will Rogers (Junior!) -- The mission given Rogers included reconnoitering Poteau, a village between Vielsalm and St. Vith. An early morning incident at Poteau was described years later by Rogers during the filming of the military documentary The Battle at St. Vith. Rogers' platoon had stayed overnight in Poteau, and early the next morning the men discovered a German tank parked nearby. Rogers and one of his men went to their jeep and, after some effort, disentangled the rocket launcher from the camouflage net. Trying to pull the frozen rockets off the jeep, they chipped the ice away, pulled off the bag and the rockets fell into the mud. They managed to load the rocket launcher, but their first attempt to fire failed. They had forgotten to attach the wires. After connecting the wires, Rogers aimed, fired and his rocket hit the tank. When the smoke began to clear, Rogers saw the tank commander open the hatch and look around as the tank backed away...undamaged. ---- I know, I know - not quite apropos (Oops!! Sorry - "appropriate") but I think it makes the point.

The former only has books for sale, while the latter has some material posted directly on their site.

 10.
quote:
Originally posted by Ibenholt: Happy happy joy joy.

Haven't heard that in a LOOONG time. Good to see some people still revere the classics.
quote:
I'm curios, how many different nationalities do we have here. I know there are a lot of Americans. I'm from Denmark. So, where are you guys from?

New Orleans LA - I guess that TECHNICALLY that's the USA, but only technically.

 12.
quote:
Originally posted by Jarmo: Hey rexford! What are you? By your use of the third person, I gather you are one of these: (a) Royalty ( An entity of some kind © A bunch of people (d) Something else (this being correct in any case)

Or a scientist - we do this all the time (and yeah, it's just as pretentious as when royalty do it, but it's part of the union rules). Ditto the GREAT value of rexfords posts - I'm finally starting to bridge the gap between my basic physics training and the applications to military technology. Lots of stuff here to "spice up" my lectures and make "F=ma" just a little bit more interesting.

Next turn he reappears marching toward the opposing map edge, identified as "infantry?". Now that's odd.....

Anyway, sorry for the rigamarole [sp?] I've emailed the pictures to David (the other David) and when he gets back to me I'll edit the message and you'll all see clearly that it wasn't worth it.
 16.
quote:
Originally posted by dNorwood: I finally got my pictures in position - I think they pretty much boil down to your comment above. (Now the moment of truth when I find out if this image embedding worked..It didn't - let's try again ... Jeez! Who do you have to know!! Once more with feeling ... )

OK, I give. I stored the pictures at //communities.msn.com/Rudenhausen/files.dca and referenced them with the standard " [ img ][ /img ] " (w/o the spaces) with no luck - little help?
 17.
quote:
Originally posted by David Aitken: A nice nightmare for BTS – narrow, curving, sloping road hemmed in by tall buildings – pretty much sums up everything the engine can't handle. =)

I finally got my pictures in position - I think they pretty much boil down to your comment above. Below is one road out of town (toward the A3, if you care). You can see a twisty road leading uphill with two roads turning left (foreground and one barely visible about middle of the picture) and one right. The two to the left slope down and the one on the right slopes up. In both cases, hemmed in by buildings. Main point - buildings on slopes REAL close to road. More extreme example of the above. Just behind the brewery (where I have NOT spend many long weekend evenings with my uncle at the Stammtisch only to stagger home, trying to uproot street signs to take home to my aunt) you see a building with a steep road (near side) and a steep walkway(far side). In the background, you can see a building clearly embedded in the slope. Last example of the above. It's not as obvious how steep this alley is, but it is a more extreme example of "buildings on slopes". And it's VERY narrow. Also, you can see on the right foreground the beginning of a "bocage" extending behind the photographer directly adjacent to the road. (I thought I had a better shot of this, but I can't find it). So if anybody tells you that you can't put bocage in Germany, I'll send you the picture! This shot really doesn't address any real mapping issues, but it shows the iron fencing that's been discussed. I have no way of knowing if it is original equipment, but as this is the home of the Count (and this village did not lack for "true believers" in the 30's aond early 40's) I imagine if anybody's iron fencing was going to be "appropriated", they might give this one a miss. (Now the moment of truth when I find out if this image embedding worked..It didn't - let's try again ... Jeez! Who do you have to know!! Once more with feeling ... ) [This message has been edited by dNorwood (edited 01-02-2001).]
 18.
quote:
Originally posted by David Aitken: If you have any specific issues in mind, do throw them into the ring – if you had a way of getting some of your photos up too, that would be great!

I'll scan the pictures and try to get them up somewhere to post here - I'm not sure I'll have issues to raise as much as I'd be interested in getting experienced input about how to do certain things.
 19.
quote:
Originally posted by Jumbo: The above two posts insinuate that I'm either an alcoholic or I'm a teenager. I can assure all that I'm neither. I've been wargaming for more than aquarter of a century.

Both were lighthearted and judgemental attempts to communicate that your post came on VERY strongly (in fact, it was too strong and judgemental to be taken seriously).
quote:
Hey Tiger and dNorwood, are either of you guys a CM player that only will play if he gets the Germans?

I can't answer your question as asked - but =I= prefer to play Allies (preferably American) for no good reason. And I lose with regularity - but in my case it's because I'm a bad player not because of the inherent disadvantage the Allies are obviously heir to. (Excuse me, to which the allies are heir to).

 21.
quote:
Originally posted by dNorwood: (No, it's no academic curiosity....)

OK, here's something. If I change the CM version, the list of scenarios changes (lower version - fewer scenarios). So, then the question becomes does anyone know if the scenarios -A Matter of Honor.cmb- -Night of the Engineers.cmb- -(and some others)- by Tim Orosz were designed for the latest (v1.1 beta) version (I'm using v1.05 - which is the latest but one, right?). Finally, am I correct in my surmise that scenarios designed with a later version are unavailable for a previous version.
 22.
quote:
Originally posted by mensch: why do they call me madmensch?.

Sorry to interrupt - A while back, someone was having trouble with scenarios in the scenario directory stubbornly not appearing in the CM list. If that person is around, how (if at all) did you resolve that difficulty? (No, it's no academic curiosity....)
 23.
quote:
Originally posted by Jarmo: Tigers were only assigned to "elite" units. That's as in elite division or regiment. Probably no green or conscript Tiger crews, though.

SPOILER --- SPOILER --- SPOILER --- SPOILER = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = In WBW's "Far from over" scenario, there are several Green tiger crews, reflecting the fact that in that fight, some of the crews were fresh out of "tiger school" and had no battle experience. But note that this battle took place late in the war (after the crossing of the Main, I think) when Germany was in "doing the best it could with what it had" mode. (THis is an excellent scenario, by the way - but if you're reading this, you probably already know that).
