  1. And if you run Windows XP you can right click on a file and "copy it >> to compressed folder". This will place a zipped file with the same name (extension .zip) in the same directory (as last file at that moment, later at whatever place your sorting preference puts it). You can do this when selecting the file for adding it to a mail.

For unzipping you can right click the file and "open file". You can then "move to" the file your PBEM directory (the nice thing is that it remebers the directory you choose, so next time you dont have to browse).

  2. I turned up the gamma a bit in CMBB (version 1.01) as one of my battles was a bit dark (overast, dawn, and a bright day in real life).

Now it seems that each time I have run CMBB I have very washed out colors (high brightness) on my monitor, even though my monitor has it's brightness centred. In fact i have to turn the brightness almost totally down to get the color back.

Of course this makes the screen rather dark after restarting the comp. Could it be that CMBB doesn't reset a gamma adjustment in-game when it quits?

I have a GeForce4 Ti (128 MB), running an old 29.81 driver (because XP really wants to load that ms driver, with the same version number but without the control panel each time when I try to update it to a more recent driver).

addition: I just played around with the advanced settings (for the graphics card). If I click on color (where you can set the color temp, and define user specific definitions, which is the default setting for me) it jumps back to the original/not washed out color to. So it seems to me that for some reason when exiting CMBB the saturation isn't put back to the proper setting. Don't know if this is a CMBB problem, a monitor problem, a driver problem or somebody else fault smile.gif .

  3. No, they are not to close, you can not target an area if the distance is not great enough, you get an "target out of range" message then, and the target line won't stick. In this case I got a nice orange area target line.

Adding: I just targeted one of the mortars on an other spot, now it is firing...... Very strange. (The other lost it's HQ, so it can not fire out of LOS right now). And no, there are no friendlies close (to react on the next post), at least 70 meters of for one mortar, and about 40 for the other. That should be enough for 50mm mortars.....

  4. I am playing a battle in which my brave defenders are being overrun by hordes of Germans. One of the few means of stopping them are the plentyfull supplied mortars (both 50mm and 81 (?) mm). Only the last three turns my mortars refuse to fire.

I have only 2 50 mm mortars left (the 81 mm is to close to the enemy to fire, and the others are broken). I try to use both with a HQ spotting for them, to prolong their life. The HQ's are not hidden, broken or otherwise busy (they are "rested", and were even not under fire), and of coursze the mortars are in command range (red line). In the plotting phase I can do an "area target" to the spot I want the shells to land, but during the turn nothing happens. One of the mortars (also "rested" not under fire, and nice in cover) has 56 HE shells left (for 3 turns now), the other 31 (for two turns). The mortars have fired before, one even at the same spot I am trying to get it to fire now.

Anyone has a suggestion why this is? (I m using version 1.01 btw on this battle).

  5. The Khukri (or however you spell it) is in fact a very common knife in Nepal. Lots of people going into the mountains will carry one, on trekkings especially the cooks and the kitchen boy's, to chop wood, vegatables and an occasional chicken.

"Security guards" at the hotels in Kathmandu (often ex-Ghurka's who do double duty as doorman and bellboy) almost always have one to (and will be proud to show it to anyone remotely interested).

Old ones are usually sold to tourists, for about ten times what a new one would cost. I bought a new one at a general store for NR 400 (IIRC) what would be about 2 euro (??). Of course it isn't as fancy as the one shown above, with just a wooden scabbart and wood heft, and made of rather soft iron (which makes it very sharp, but care intensive).

  6. Short update:

Rear Guard Action against Kannonier is about halfway, will be finished on time.

Hosszu against Tuomas is also a bit beyond halfway, but as others noted Tuomas is MIA again. If he turns up soon we should have no problem though.

Xmass against Dorosh is in the last minute, but it has been there for about 3 weeks now, hardwar problems seem to have stuck the jinglebells.

King of .. and The Beast are finished.

  7. The range was about 100 mtrs (much closer and the sharpshooters are very reluctant to engage). I can live with a lower ammo expenditure, but shooting its sidearm looks not logical to me. I mean, it seems unlikely that he lugs two rifles with him doesn't it? (and even 50 mtrs is a bit much for pistol range).

But it seems unlogical that the use of ammo is moddeled as "one ammo for each use" (burst, salvo or shot) for all units, except for the sharpshooter.

  8. Hi,

I used sharpshooters for the first time in CMBB (at least I looked for the first time close at them while they were at work) and I noticed that they did not use ammo.

This was a russian elite sharpshooter. He had 11 ammo at the start of the turn. During the turn he fired several times (4 - 6 times) at enemy squads (they hit the dirt due to this each time). First it sounded like 2 or 3 shots each time he fired (not a bug perse, but a change from CMBO that I had not notixced before) and second his ammo count did NOT go down.

I did a search, and it has been noted before (under the titel "Another bug ? - Sharpshooters", somewhere in oktober), but there has been no answer if this is correct or indeed a bug.

Nb. This is in version 1.01, but I did find no mention of it in the read me for version 1.02.

  9. All depending on the calibre and the remaining energy (speed) the bullet has when hitting and/or entering. I remember reading in a diary from a TC where he told how small calibre penetrations just made one or two richocets in the tank, and then dropped to the floor. One landed in the lap of the driver, who ditched it cursing as it was rather hot. Somewhere else there was a mention of a Tiger with 150(?) hits, several (patial) penetrations and still functioning.

  10. To put this in perspective (the tank bit that is) I just lost tw0 Panthers in two tuens to Russian T-34's (well , the fisrt at least, the seconfd opponent is only tentative id'ed at the moment).

The first was killed at approx 600 mtrs by 3 T-34's doing shoot-and-scoot, second hit killed it, no (known) counter kills. The second was killed by one (1!) shot at 1000+ mtrs, he didn't even see his opponent before getting killed. So, why are those damn Panthers so crappy when I use them??

  11. I am getting to hate my arty observers. Though it might be much more realistic then in CMBO, arty, and the scattering of the impact point is getting rather annoying.

In a current battle my 150 mm arty observer finaly had a FFE, after a long wait. Unfortynatly a tank of my dropped some smoke in his los. Result: the arty landed 100 mtrs of, in my own lines. As it was 150 mm, it killed about 20 men, panicked a couple of squads, blew up a armored car of two, and stopped my attack. As the first shells landed at the start of the turn, I lost half of my arty support as well.

Now it might be much more realistic then in CMBO, where you could send arty to a spot observed by someone else, with just a penalty of a bit delay, but I really would love to have the option to cancel the fire mission as my observer can not see the spotting round. Maybe an option to "fire blind", with the risk of a random error, and the normal fire mission, which wont go FFe unless the observer sees a spotting round on target?

I really hate it that I have to check all my arty spotters each turn if they might have lost loss due to smoke, to prevent them froim shelling my own troops, or just wasting that arty. And somehow it does not seem realistic to me either if a close firemission is called for that that observer calls in the FFE as he has not seen the spotting round.

  12. Short update.

Finished the Beast against Holien ages ago

Debrecen against Carrot is at turn 20 (out of 28)

Rear Guard Action against Kannonier is is at turn 12 (of 40)

Hosszu.... against Tuomas (turn 8?) and Xmass against Dorosh (turn 28?) seem to be on hold.

My non RoW games against Mossie and Zeppe are also waiting for the next turn. As Zeppe has asked for his turn repeatedly (and I have send it repeatedly) my provider could have troubles. If you are expecting a turn, and get nothing, please send me a mail.

  13. Baling is post WW2, certainly in Europe, as it needs mechanized force to do it effective enough to make it worthwile. In the twenties and thirties some (steampowered) machines were available, but stey were huge. You could transport them from field to field, but there they were stationary, so they were only used for grain threshing and the like.

In the (19)70's and 80's hay was still brought in by hand in the Balkan countries. I don't know about other East-block ones. I have got pictures of Yougoslavia.

Their hay stacks are not stacks though, but long racks a few meters high, with horizontal poles (like a sideways stretched ladder) over which the hay was draped to get it dry, with a small roof over it (maybe due to the heat there, less chance of a accidental fire this way).

  14. Friday evening update:

The Rear Guard action against Kannonier R is lagging behind. Just 3 turns exchanged.

Hosszu.. hm, whatever, against Tuomos has just started, but is only 25 turns

King of Debrecen against Cpl Carrot is trundling along unstoppeble at turn 5

The Beast against Holien is almost finished, though the exchange speed goes down a bit as we are as exhausted as our men.

And Chrismas against Dorosh seems to slow down to, but we are already somewhere in turn 18
