Combat Mission: Germany Invades Russia, Does Good, Russia Counterattacks, Germany Defends But Ultimatly Loses(or, CMGIRDGRCGDBUTL for short). Combat Mission: A Bridge To Tsar. Combat Mission: Russian Purge Pack. Combat Mission: Insert Working Title Here. Combat Mission: Beyond Stalingrad. Combat Mission: Russian Human Wave Attack. Combat Mission: Jeep Rushing & Edge Hugging On The East Front. Not sure which of these will finally be chosen, but they're all winners in my book.
  2. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Croda: well if you're looking where you're placing your feet, then you aren't looking to make sure that no one is shooting at you! We'd best get out of the way, I imagine."
  3. Since it was a Jumbo Sherman, my guess is that the crew was busy trying to coax the pig into reverse. Or maybe they bogged. Or, maybe the crew just said, "F*** it, this thing is such a pain to move, I say we just sit here and hope for the best." Or, maybe, a young Ralph Nader was in the crew and convinced everyone else that they could heat the East Coast for two winters with the gas the Jumbo would use to skulk back down the slope. You never said how close the infantry was. If it was pretty close, it would be a bigger immediate threat than a distant(and unseeable) AA gun(which I agree is what it sounds like it was).
  4. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by MikeT: Please excuse if this has been brought up before but for some time now I haven't been able to game at all, working 6 days now, and only now am I taking the time to get back into gaming. OK, my question. It seems that only ONE texture may be loaded for each vehicle type. In other words, if I download the high-res texture for a Panther A ALL Panther A's will use the same texture. How about giving up the option of changing around textures for individual tanks/vehicles. This would mean that we would have one tank with a certain camo pattern or even vehicle number and a second vehicle with an entirely camo pattern and/or vehicle number. I checked with the programmers here at work and they seem to feel that on concept it is doable but would depend on how the code is written. Opinions anyone? Good idea, great idea, waste of time idea? MikeT<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Would be nice, and is do-able, but don't bet the farm on it happening. The repetition of textures for each vehicle gives an overall lower system load than non-repetitive textures would. The game only has to load the texture in once and then paint them repeatedly onto all similar vehicles. If they used varying textures, it would have to load each and every one used in a given scenario into memory, which would put more strain on the computer. It's the difference between loading one 500k hi-res texture and loading 10 500k textures to paint on the different looking Shermans(or whatever).
  5. Speaking as someone who usually plays Axis, it depends on what you're doing with them, and where. SMG's are great for town fighting, but suck if you're forced to trade fire at longer ranges. They're good for woods fighting, or fog or night fighting, but not in open daylight attacks. The fact that security squads have a few rifles doesn't make up for the fact that at longer ranges you're down to essentially a 2 or 3 man squad. HMG's and LMG's are good defensive weapons to tie up oncoming units, and are good at covering advances if you're on the attack, but they move so slow that you're stuck with a slow, cumbersome advance if you want to bring thier firepower along with your main force. Personally, I find that regular Rifle Squads are the best overall unit. Good FP close in, while still being able to shoot longer range enemy units.
  6. They're all lying to you "Junior Members". Member status is actually a premium service, like HBO(but less sucky), that entitles you to lots of great stuff like free scenarios, PBEM, and gets you entered into a Grand Prize Drawing for a real, working, fully armed Panther Ausf. A. *or* a slightly read copy of "Panzer Battles" by Maj. Gen. F.W. von Mellenthin(selection of the grand prize made according to availiability). Act now. Offer expires on, let's say, 01/01/00. Women swoon over members, your boss will be intimidated, your parents will finally be proud and stop saying you're dead when asked about you. It's all within your grasp. Email me for where to send your money orders and you'll be on your way to coveted "Member" status. We're also selling the awesome "Moderator" title, despite what you may or may not hear from other Moderators(possibly in this very thread...) Email me for details.

  8. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by ParasiteX9: aha i figured it out. since im using the warez version of CM (i know im evil, but im a jobless 14 year old. Ill order CM as soon as i get the cash) i figured that maybe the rippers had taken out the explosions. so i got the demo and sure enough insted of a shell just plowing into the ground and throwing up a bunch of debris, it actually explodes. well. i havent yet been able to see if i can get a vehicle to explode yet though, the two demo maps dont really have any very heavy tanks/guns. ok a final note. if anybody here has a cable connection, i was wondering if you could do me a BIG favor and iso your CM cd and upload it too me? =] i know it sounds greedy here but im kind of desperate. besides its easy to do and wont hurt your CD at all and wont take a sec to upload. PLEASE. i beg of you all!<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> I'd send you an ISO, but I can't email it due to mailbox restrictions. Can I just have the FBI hand deliver it along with the warrant to search? Let me know.
  9. Same boat, and the best solution is to A)move the computer to a high traffic area in your house where the wife and kids hang out so they can see you at least, B)ask her when she complains why she doesn't want you to have a hobby, and C)call it a "squad level tactical simulator", and not a "game" when talking to her. Tell her it's educational(and prove it by asking her the ground pressure and sillouette of a PzIV and then telling her the correct answer). Discuss things like overwatch and perimeter defenses in depth whenever she brings up the subject and(if she's anything like my wife) after 5 or 6 times she'll no longer want to mention the game in any context, which includes arguing about it. Also, show your kids the cool explosions and they'll take an interest in it to some degree, and move a phone next to the computer and practice saying "Mmmm hmmm, really? You don't say." over the din of battle before calling your parents.
  10. Too weird. Just the other day I bought a 1/35th 4 man 6th Army Stalingrad figure kit and was going to ask here about recommended net resources on models, etc. I haven't made a model in 17 years, and it's CM that's rekindled my interest in military models. I'd also recommend that you start with a cheap model if you're out of practice and are going to do your own painting. The Stalingrad kit was $7.00(US) at my local hobby shop. I offer this advice based on my new experience in screwing models up... It was fun making and painting though, even if the end result is less than stellar, and I'm heading back tomorrow for some more cheapo kits to practice on.
  11. sorry. [This message has been edited by Pham911 (edited 09-28-2000).]
  12. In CM do infantry/team units have thier morale drop quicker under certain types of fire(meaning is there a difference between .50 caliber MG fire from a tank and .50 caliber MG fire from a MG team)? Sigh... I used moral instead of morale in the topic... It's not really a moral question I suppose. Sorry for misleading anyone. [This message has been edited by Pham911 (edited 09-28-2000).]
  13. For either side there's actually a lot of fudging room. Germans threw together ad hoc units when they needed to, as did the Allies during the Buldge. I can't remember how many times I've read about Allied commanders pressing fleeing units that came through thier positions into service for them. If you pick and choose wisely, you can do ok with assembling mixed forces. If you go nuts and pick 50 Panzershrecks and a sniper, that's probablly pretty ahistoric(and suicial).
  14. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by aka_tom_w: OK thanks I'm not a student I'm the Sys Admin responsible for the computer hardware he is looking at and I realy don't want to piss anyone off. -tom w<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> See, you say you don't want to piss anyone off. I say you just haven't tried it yet. Imagine telling your kids, "Casper Weinberger took a swing at me when he was 81 years old.". They'll say "who the $@!# is Casper Weinberger", but you'll know who you mean and the pride will trickle down the them as they tell thier friends that some old dude tried to kill thier father with a meat cleaver(kids tend to embelish a bit). Be creative. Make a screen saver that flashes "Iran Contra" repeatedly. Or, if his guide asks you to explain some computer function or part say, "I have no recollection of that at this moment." It's all about having fun and looking for new work to support your proud kids. Let us know if he hits you or just tries.
  15. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Mannheim Tanker: Ask him if implementation of high-speed jeep recon tactics by NATO forces would be gamey... <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Oh, joy. Then Casper and the lab can generate 5000 posts debating the issue in depth.
  16. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by ACTOR: Wasn't Weinberger the Secretary of Defense? I believe that he was the Sec. Def. in Reagan's first term...I better go look...back soon. I was right. He was the Sec. Def. under Reagan. I would ask him what he thought about the current state of the NATO forces? What would he change if he could? [This message has been edited by ACTOR (edited 09-27-2000).]<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> The fact that it took three answers to get this information out is kind of scary, considering this is a military oriented board, and he was the secretary of DEFENSE... If you want to sound all smart and annoying, ask him why did we "invade" Grenada, did Ronald actually not have any recollection of that at that time and was it a result of lying or alzhimers, and similiarly, did he personally have his hand in the Iran Contra cookie jar. Also, does he think the VP at the time was a goof for reversing his stance on "Voodoo Economics" to get his foot in the White House door. It'll make your teachers pretty proud to watch you piss off the big CW.
  17. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Gregory Deych: In so far as captured tanks go, Russians reworked captured PzIIIs and IVs into Su-76i and SU-122s (122s were later switched to T34 chassis). Clearly, the possibility was there.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Yes, but the Russians had a damn good reason to. They needed them after being hit well before Stalin was expecting(he wanted to be the attacker when the inevitable came, remember). Germany at this time still had good production and supply capabilities and wasn't exactly in dire need of scavanged tanks.
  18. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by GriffinCheng+: I would have a little reservations about this point. I have been reading "Villers Bocage: Through the Lens" recently and it is said that the KOed half-tracks were looted mainly because the Germans needed spare parts from them. My impression is: if this happened in WF, especially late at war, it was bigger in EF. My 2cents. Griffin. <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Bigger because the war was larger in the East? But, by the time the Allies invaded France, German industry, while no where near destroyed, was producing fewer goods(like parts for halftracks). In the East, if you used captured armor and needed parts, you couldn't use German machined ones and had to canibalize. I can't picture any situation where you could maintain a functional force of armor by having to not only kill the right tanks, but not have any more damage-in-need-of-repair occur to your tanks while you do so. And, from what I understand, certain tank parts wore out pretty quickly. I don't think you could support a captured tank for long.
  19. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by FUTURE: Pham911 : yes the gold demo did run. I know I dont have a 3d card as I have tried to run 3D games to no avail.... You must have something working for you with that setup for it to run playably.
  20. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by The Commissar: As long as the cussing stops, I say bring him back! With the great writing he did for his latest AAR, I think he is as deservant as ever. Cheers! <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> As deservant as ever isn't a ringing endorsement for someone who once got banned... But, as was said it's a BTS matter, as a it's thier board they're trying to keep clean.
  21. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by aka_tom_w: I think you are correct sorry I must be mistaken perhaps I AM confused with old resurected threads. Thanks for the update. sorry for the confusion -tom w<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> No, no. That threw me too when I saw a thread in the main list that had an author of Fionn. It was only after I noticed how weird it was that nobody for the first 5 or 10 messages said anything about the ban that I looked at the date... Can we ban the ressurection people?
  22. Lots of talk about cherry picking these days. I guess they're in season... It all leads me to ponder something; Can sound tactics overcome cherrypickers? I mean, ideally different armor should be used slightly differently. A Puma isn't swapable for a King Tiger in punch, but it's got speed that the KT lacks which makes it a good flanking vehicle. Look at it this way, if I don't use my bazookas, mortars, and infantry men interchangable, why should I use my armor that way? If I've got a choice between a Puma or a Tiger to use for pop up shots from behind a hill, I'd have to go with the Puma. It can leap forward, shoot once, then race back way before most other tanks can traverse, aim, and fire. You can repeat it endlessly with little risk(until the enemy repositions).A Tiger lumbers to the top and by the time his barrel clears the crest he's on buttoned with a dead TC. I think most people buy based on caliber, with or without cherry picking(not everyone, just a lot of people), and don't look closely at speed(more mobile), horsepower(accelerates faster), or other non-lethal factors. So, if a cherry picker selects five King Tigers, he's stuck playing with a slow, cumbersome force that(hopefully) can be flanked repeatedly(once they turn to face you, you should be gone...) with your weak Shermans. There's no rule that says you have to engage his armor if it's stronger. You can run from it without fear if you check your LOS and eyeball the path from a 1 view to keep cover between you and them. If he uses his armor to play cat and mouse for the game, let him and concentrate on the infantry fighting(he won't have had much to spend on soldiers if he's picked the best and most armor he could, remember). If he engages your infantry with the tanks, flank him and hit him from the rear with yours. If he piecemeals his tanks to try to pin you down, allow him to catch you in close quarters, then hit him hard(since you do move your tanks in platoons, right?)and force the AI to reverse even if the cherry picker can't allow himself to back down. The AI will usually flee at the exclusion of firing from these 5 on 1 situations. A 37mm gun at close range can get lucky, and even if it doesn't, you're no worse for the wear. My point is this, since you're not cherry picking you should have an adaptable force while the cherry picker does not. He's either attacking or defending and can't switch his positions, and he's unable to switch units to better locations quickly. Even if you're playing with historic compositions it's adaptable. After all, the Armies didn't pick these combinations out of a hat. They did it for a reason; it made tactical sense. Also, I think we all play this game because we enjoy the challenge and we find it fun. It's no less challenging to figure out a good way to remove 4 Jumbo Shermans with PzIv's and PSW's than it is to figure out how to take St. Lo from historical army composition and deployment. Don't sweat the cherry pickers so much unless you're trying to re-create an actual battle(in which case you should be playing with someone you know anyways). So, I guess let me know what you think, engage his armor on your terms, and please, please people, don't lead with your tanks.
  23. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by FUTURE: I have played the Gold Demo. What my question relates to is the fact that I dont have a 3d card. I have 32mb ram and a Pent 233. Does anyone else here play CM on a low spec system and how does it affect game play.. ? <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Had the exact same setup before upgrading, but with a 3D card(Voodoo2). Game ran fine, but you would need a 3D card for it to work with your system. With a 233Mhz it won't run acceptably in software mode. Sorry. Voodoo2's are pretty cheap now, though. BTW, did the gold demo run ok on your system? If so, are you sure that your video card doesn't have 3D acceleration?
