I have a VERY extensive collection of WWII German 1/72 aircraft. Modeling is a blast. I started very young(ten years old) and have been doing it fairly consistently ever since. Notnowjohn "Doh!"...Homer

I think Elvis is clamoring for TCP/IP so that he won't have to have Mr. Peng over to his house every time he wants to play a "quick one". Apparently, Mr. Peng drinks all Elvis' beer and impregnates his cats as well. Who wouldn't be begging for TCP/IP under those twisted circumstances. Any resemblance to any smilies, living or dead, is purely coincidental and should not be construed, blah, blah, blah....

ROFLOL! That topic header is an eyebrow raiser. -
9 battles based on ASL!

I'm with Mr. Norton, I can't wait to do a piece of Stalingrad! And by the way the site, the maps and the scenarios look great! -
Personally, I believe the whole question of "gaminess" and things being "gamey" is getting way out of hand. The last time I checked, Combat Mission, while admittedly a very realistic simulation is still a "game". As desktop or laptop commanders, we are given (or choose) certain assets with which we are expected to achieve certain results. Not to make the absolute most of these assets in any given situation just seems silly to me. I played an operation not too long ago as the Germans. My orders were very explicit: defend to the last man! Now, if the last man happened to be the commander of a MMG Carrier, and my defense hinged on having him charge that thin-skinned TD in the possible but-oh-so-next-to-impossible hope of knocking him out, do I hesitate? Hell no. And when my opponent does the same to me do I scream "Gamey"? I think not. I admire his brass and say a silent prayer for his brave, dead lads or laugh my ass off and chalk up another one to this incredible "game" when the impossible happens and he kicks my ass. That's just what makes this "game" so damn much fun! Anything can happen and sometimes it even does. And what exactly is the difference between a gamey tactic in CM and one that is rare, unusual and unexpected in the real world? Did the crew members of abandoned tanks ever charge enemy tanks on foot? I was never there and I dont' recall ever reading anything like that but I'll bet anybody that they probably did. And it probably happened more than once. (This, however, is something I usually try to avoid, as crewmen by and large make suck-ass infantry, and also because I will soon be involved in the CMMC, wherein surviving armor crewmen will be a very valuable commodity.) But I'll bet Patton would've charged that Hummel with those carriers if he didn't have anything else and felt the situation warranted it. Just my lousy, know-nothing two cents, and all resemblances to any smilies living or dead is purely coincidental...

TCP/IP Headcount please read

I'm very much looking forward to TCP/IP. PBEM is fine but DOES take forever. -
Tracked versus Wheeled: No Difference?!
Notnowjohn replied to Delta Charlie 228's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
Well, of course, everybody knows that! There is also very little difference in performance between the $1000 and $10 toilet seat models. Or between the $550 and $2 screw-drivers for that matter. I wonder what sort of "wheels" they're talking about here...certainly not the rubberized, air-holding thingies... -
I was playing some Iron Butterfly backwards one night while ingesting several unknown foreign substances and I kept hearing "Go to battlefront.com, go to battlefront.com" in between the grooves of the vinyl. Oh yeah, the walls were melting or something like that... Thank you for your patience...

How does one use the German ACs?
Notnowjohn replied to Oberst Angsthase's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
Fionn, consider yourself challenged!( I mean that in the nicest possible way.) And Germanboy, you need to contact me if you have recieved the game. Or have you grown tired of slapping me around, hmmmmm? Notnowjohn, formerly known as Gunnerdream -

Whats the best infantry squad in Cm
Notnowjohn replied to Hannibal's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
I'm with Bullethead. FO with long, clean LOS, plenty of big ammo and an uncharacteristically goofy A.I. that clumps a bunch of infantry together in that tiny patch of woods... -
"Silly Judicial system!!??" American justice is the best that money can buy! Look at how well our jurists are paid! And the very reasonable fees that our lawyers collect! And our judges don't have to wear those silly white wigs... Thank you for your patience...

Kudos to Wild Bill--He 'da Man
Notnowjohn replied to Buckeye's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
I'll second that! I've been playing and enjoying Bill's work for years, since he did the old "rogue" scenarios for Squad Leader. You can count on him for well thought out, exciting and surprising stuff!! -
Hey, who can I get to test some ops?
Notnowjohn replied to Miyamoto Musashi's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
I'd love to be a guinea pig. Operations are my favorite anyway. Email me at cbierlein@adelphia.net -
Man! I keep stumbling into these spoiler minefields and its pissing me off! Please have the common courtesy not to assume that everyone else has played the scenario you happen to be discussing on the forum. Generic info is fine. Just don't start talking about unit disposition, default set-up areas and the like. Think before you post. This rant is now over. Thank you for your patience.

CM in comparison to ASL
Notnowjohn replied to PacifistButLikeWarGames's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
CM is better because you don't have to worry about cats, small children or "The Big Drunk Finger" -
Has anyone been whipped by the AI?
Notnowjohn replied to Greg Scurlock's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
I lost as Germans in "One Long, Cold Day". That is the best scenario I think I've played yet. ( Of course I've been playing mostly quick-battles to save the scenarios for double blinds!) That one to me is a real "mood" scenario...cold, bleak, and painful! Loved it! -
Anybody willing to test a scenario?
Notnowjohn replied to pathfinder1's topic in Combat Mission Archive #4 (2002)
I have lots of time and will play it to death if need be! cbierlein@adelphia.net -

Who would like to see a Cm Magazine
Notnowjohn replied to Hannibal's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
Personally, I agree with Fionn about the book recommendation thing, just because I'd really like to get ideas for scenarios. Also at this point, I'd like to see it concentrated solely on things pertaining to CM. Although I am a fan of wargaming in general, I would simply hate to see something like this get diluted with all kinds of gobbledegook pertaining to other games or subjects that, although interesting, depart too far from CM. (i.e. stories about Mata Hari or articles concerning camouflage patterns of early fourteenth century pikemen or why its unwise to use the "kithen sink" defense in the latest sci-fi computer simulation.) Of course, this is all just one man's humble opinion, and I bow spinelessly to the whims of the masses... Thank you for your patience.
