  1. Try setting the resolution to 640x480 before you launch CM and turn off the movie by holding down shift while CM launches. You only have to turn off the movie once, and it will stay off. If I let it start with the movie it forces my PB G3 into software rendering, but if the movie's off I get hardware rendering.
  2. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by JWorthing: ChrisL, I feel cheated! that's pretty funny...undead... the only way to get rid of him is full on cremation... send em over to my croc...<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Yes, it was the one that you blew up (or thought you did). I didn't want to tell you he was still alive (or at least not dead...) I could send him over to distract your crock while I shoot with the PF.

  4. I sometimes can't find my way to the CMHQ site if I start at TheGamers.net. The CMHQ is at http://combathq.thegamers.net . To be more specific about some of the useful information: there's a very detailed tutorial that goes with the Grafenwohr scenario, but which will be useful with the demo, and a bunch of after action reports that give blow by blow with circles and arrows and 8x10 color glossy photos from both sides. Many of them are from the demo scenarios.
  5. I had another zombie-troop experience in CM the other day. I've been reluctant to post it because there are some here who get a little freaked out by it... I had an MG42 HMG team in a house that was being shelled by an enemy tank (a Sherman V I believe). The team was down to 1 alive and 5 casualties when the building caught fire. The unit stood up, flopped over, and the info window said "Eliminated 0 6 " Here's the scary part-- all of a sudden a crew comes running out of the building with "1 5 " and the same name as the eliminated crew. The only reasonable explanation is that they're undead. I might have to targt them and shoot them in the head or something. There's a body somewhere in the flames that I can click on that still shows "Eliminated 0 6 " It really doesn't affect gameplay, unless they start sucking on the brains of my other troops, but it is a surprise to see such undead running around the battlefield. Since infantry combat is filled with unlikely events, I suppose that this must have happened occasoinally in the ETO as well, but it's probably been covered up.... Where were Mulder and Scully in 1944... [This message has been edited by chrisl (edited 08-01-2000).]
  6. I've had great luck with the .50 cal taking out german light armor (HTs and ACs). I've generally had trouble doing the same to US HTs with the MG42, but in a recent scenario have managed to do it a couple of times. You just have to be unpleasantly close in order to do it. If you can set up a nice ambush it works very well.
  7. There's a whole set of recording people called "Foley Artists" who dub in the sound effects. Everything from the actors footsteps, to chewing on carrots, to horses hooves. And yes, many of them still use coconuts for horse hoof sounds. Nothing sounds as realistic after all those years of hearing them. I read an article waaaaay back in the past about a new Foley studio and they went into detail about all the different ground surfaces for walking sounds, etc. Really quite an interesting job.
  8. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Pillar: Sawdust stops magnetic fields? <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> distance does. The sawdust keeps the magnet from getting close enough to stick. Try it on the fridge at home with sheets of paper and magnets.

  10. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Fuerte2: Right, it would be great... like Stars.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Trade passwords. Instead of sending the movie file to be watched and returned, play it (don't look!), create the movie for your side, and watch the movie. then you send both the movie and the subsequent orders file.
  11. You can't dig in during the scenario. If the designer allows it the defenders will start dug in. There's lots of discussions about it if you do a search on "dig in" or something like that. A few people even went out and dug some foxholes just to see how long it would take, and there are many experienced foxhole diggers on the beta test team.
  12. I had a similar problem with my PB G3 and it was cured by turning off the movie (not skipping it). To turn off the movie hold down shift while you launch CM.
  13. The same question popped up a few weeks ago. The crew is aiming the main armament too, but they're using the MGs to check range (and maybe force the target to button, impairing it's ability to return fire). The delay will apparently be there whether they fire the MGs or not, and they're using the MGs as part of the target acquisition.
  14. I'm stuck in 640x480, too. The easy way to tell antipersonnel from anti-tank signs (aside from stepping on them) is that the anti-personnel mine sign is one line ("Achtung Minen", and the anti-tank mine sign is two lines ("Achtung Minen <line feed> Panzer") and if they're daisy chain you see them before they blow something up, unless maybe you're flying around a corner in a fast vehicle. I discovered the one line vs two because I went through all the textures in the resource files. They're in super high res there. You can even see curtains in the house windows.
  15. 5 - it was hard at first but a lot of people slow down a little as the game gets more complicated. Also if all the games aren't at the same stage at the same time it's easier to think about them.
  16. What kind of interplayer communication will you have? Can the CC attach vehicles or support weapons/arty to the captains for their command?
  17. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by David Aitken: Although, if they're firing real guns, you'd assume they couldn't affect the sound. <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> You'd be amazed at a what a few thousand dollars worth of signal processing equipment can do. And the average post-production facility used for movies the scale of SPR has a lot more than a few $K worth of processing hardware. Even the choice of microphone and how you place it can have a huge effect, and once it's on tape you can mess with it all you want. Used to do a lot of recording in a previous life.
  18. I just did a test of minefield spotting. I set up a scenario with a blank (one level, clear terrain) map. Set up the Allies as defenders (my hypothesis was that maybe adding mines as fortifications for the allies was an afterthought, and all minefields were identified as german minefields deep in the code and that germans could always see them. Gave the allies about a company of guys (probably should have done less, makes no difference). Gave the allies one Daisy chain mine field, 2 AT mine fields and 2 AP mine fields. Gave the Germans a pioneer company (should be better at spotting mines). Played the scenario hotseat against myself. The minefields were easy to identify as to which is which by the locations in which I placed them. Started playing: Marched the germans line abreast toward and through the mine fields. Marched the allies off to one side (I should have put an LOS blocking berm between them) Eventually (and they had to be within 150 m or so) someone spotted the daisy chain mines. The buried AT mines were never spotted (I walked troops back and forth over them). The buried antipersonnel mines were spotted only when someone walked on them and set them off. Note that everyone on the map had LOS to everywhere at all times. My conclusion: John Kettler glimpsed a set of daisy chain mines through a break in some trees while someone was sneaking about. It might be a difficult LOS to pick out, since you can't pause the movie and use the LOS tool as soon as the mines are spotted.
  19. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Mark IV: Achtung Minen! Panzer! It is not a daisy chain, near as I can tell, just the sign in the open. [This message has been edited by Mark IV (edited 07-29-2000).]<HR></BLOCKQUOTE> That would be a daisy chain minefield. You can't see the mines-- you just get a sign. If it was anti-personnel mines it would just say "Achtung Minen" without the "Panzer". The only way to spot a buried minefield (AP or AT) is to travel through it and set one off, unless Charles has quietly added a bit of new spotting code.
  20. That's awesome data. I'm going to copy it out and paste it into my collection of useful CM links/info. Make sure that guachi sees this and adds it to the FAQ!!
  21. Do some experiments. Set up some scenarios where you have different exp levels of FO for each size arty, and do some missions with and without LOS. I did this with the gold demo for the 81 mm mortars and got roughly 200mx200m centered on the target for a target in LOS. I haven't gotten around to it for the final version. You'll still occasionally get the wild short that falls on your head, but it will give you a good rule of thumb.
  22. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by :USERNAME:: Personally I think BTS should have modeled LMGs and BAZ and PSK as weapoons that would be "added on" to a squad. This way, other squad members could pick them up as they do now with the inherent LMG/BAR etc. <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> MG42s show up in at least 3 places, including as squad weapons that can get picked up: 1) MG42 HMG with a 6 man crew to support it. Lots of ammo, high ROF, good sights, can't run. 2) MG42 LMG with a 2 man team. Comes with ammo of about 30, can't run. iron sights? 3) MG42 Squad LMG. Same FP as the 2 man team LMG, but can run (ammo divided among more people? probably). If the MG gunner is hit there's a chance that it will get picked up by another squad member. Firepower: range 40 100 250 500 1000 m MG42 HMG 155 125 77 52 27 MG42 LMG 50 45 30 18 -- (the formatting doesn't want to space the numbers out, but you get the idea) [This message has been edited by chrisl (edited 07-29-2000).] [This message has been edited by chrisl (edited 07-29-2000).]
  23. Started playing SL some time in the early 80s. Bought everything through GI, and then went off to college and didn't have people to play against. I have the COI with the vehicle counters printed 3 shades too dark-- man those are hard to read. I've only played a few times since high school, but have dragged it around hoping I'd find new opponents for 15 years, and just dug it out a few days ago to figure out what the victory conditions were for Bucholz Station.
  24. Timbuktu should do it. I haven't tried it, but I use it for other things (like remote control of experiments). The catch is that you have to give the remote person full permission to control your machine, and you need a way to inform the other person it's their turn. I suppose you could use the intercom feature of Timbuktu for that.
