  1. How long should smoke last on the battlefield?

It seems smoke from Arty and Mortars last over 20 minutes or more while smoke fired by AFVs last only a few minutes. Is this accurate?

My opponent in a game fired tons of smoke at me, from arty and AFVs...I hid one of my tanks behind one smoke cover and to my chagrin it turned out to be smoke fired by a StuG as it disappeared sooner than I thought exposing me to the AFV.

  2. Without a doubt it was CC2. I must of played over 250 ladder games alone! Never reached number 1 but had great satifaction playing and sometimes beating the best players in classic head-to-head matches. Joined a Clan for CC3 and had more fun talking strategy and such with other clan players than playing the game as their was so many problems with online play. The number of disconnected games was staggering and although Real Red improved the game from being too much a tank game the lousy connection problem was too much to take: and of course the AI wasn't very good. I am waiting for Atomic to make vast improvments to CC4 before I will take that game seriously. All other games will gather dust when CM is released, no doubt in my mind smile.gif

  3. I often have my units rotate a certain direction at the end of a movement but on ocassion have noticed the units do not rotate the way you asked them to once they finish moving. I am talking about units who have not been spotted or under any direct threat. I realize units will turn to face a threat which is understandeable, but to turn and face a different direction under no threat from what you asked them to do is strange.

Maybe there is another explanation I am not aware of yet.

  4. Nope! He is not hiding. I have noticed the TacAi would keep changing targets from HQ units to Tank Crews so eventually I targeted the tank crew that was unbuttoned around 200 metres away but he refuses to fire his rifle for some reason...there are infantry in woods nearby so perhps he is afraid to fire to expose his position to these infantry squads. Maybe there is more going on in the games then we realize that could cause situations not to develop the way we want them too. Perhaps the TacAi is more intelligent then we are sometimes smile.gif

  5. My age of 52 should bump up the average age of players. I have been playing war games from miniatures to board and computer games since I was a teenager in the 60's.

The amount of WW2 models that were available in the 60's were unbelievable and dirt cheap too! I would spend days making models and painting minuature soldiers for hours...I would come out of the room on a high from all the glue sniffing and not knowing what was causing it in those days smile.gif

  6. My Sharpshooter in Riesberg has only fired once so far and has had an unbuttoned tank commander in his sights for over 2 minutes without firing! The enemy has not spotted him yet so perhaps he will eventually fire his rifle. He must be an overly cautious SOB smile.gif

I am glad to see snipers have been effective in other games. I have utilized snipers to their utmost in Close Combat but have yet to see anything in CM to match my successes in CC. Guess I am just unlucky so far in the beta demo, and my luck should change in the final version smile.gif

"Snipers: CM has sharpshooters who are to most intents and purposes the same insofar as they are great shots. They just aren't hyper-specialised like real snipers were. Real snipers wouldn't be all that common on a battlefield of CM's scale anyway.. There was a big discussion of sniping a while back and I think everyone is happy with the solution."

    -------------------------------

But why do they not shoot at all! In a current PBEM game I am playing at Riesburg the German sharpshooter is put in a very good position to shoot at the enemy. Targets are selected but the sniper will not fire even at close range! Other than spotting this guy is completely useless.

CM is a fantastic game but I do want to see the sniper be a little more effective than what I have seen in the beta demo so far.

  8. I recently played a head-to-head game of Close Combat 4. A lone infantryman named Evans used all the ammo from his rifle and then proceeded to pick up a Thompson from his fallen sargeant and contine to hold off a German attack on his position. Evans ended up with 8 kills. I know CC has its problems but the soldier individualism including scavenging of CC is something I hope CM can seriously look at for the future.

Regardless though, Combat Mission is a great game and I look forward to my copy in the mail smile.gif

  9. I have a bazooka man left in a foxhole with no more ammo left...he is about to be assaulted in a PBEM game I am playing. I know there are dead & wounded infantrymen around him. Will he picking up a rifle to defend himself, make a run for it or just surrender, which is more likely to happen?

I did a search for scavenging & came up empty. It would add a new dimension in this great game if scavenging is implemented in CM.

  10. I justed rented the HBO movie "When Trumpets Fade" and was curious to know what the German tanks were in the movie..with the side skirts and camo it was hard to determine what they were. The movie was filmed in Hungary which might have had a few old WW2 working tanks around.

BTW the movie was excellent and am looking forward to a Hurtgen Forest scenario or 2 in CM.

  11. In Close Combat 4 you cannot choose your Battle Group which makes single game H2H encounters those that each side will know each others Oob

unrealistic. I hear in CC5 Atomic will probably go back to a partial selection of forces like in CC2 which will please most vet CC players.

Designed battlemaker maps for CM with a partial or full selection of forces based on historical accuracy would be great for CM ladder or tourney matches.

  12. FIONN - My 'Zook team were hiding in a foxhole facing down the road...when the H/T came into view is when the team took it upon themselves to run into the open to take a shot at the H/T..no movement factor was given to them and they were not fired upon before they ran. This has only happened the one time so far...possibly they became frightened when the H/T drove fast down the road, panicked, ran and when they knew they were NOT being fired upon decided to take a stand in the open to fire at the H/T and lost their lives in the process.

In the same scenario I decided to fire smoke from my Hellcats for cover knowing my opponent had his AFVs in perfect LOS to the upper road but the damn Hellcats decided to fire upon the AFVs before attempting to lay smoke and consequently now I have 2 flaming Hellcats..if they had laid smoke right away like I asked them too they could all possibly be alive. I guess your troops take their own initiative often making the game very interesting, enjoyable and frustrating all at the same time..sounds like my Wife smile.gif

    Merry Xmas to all..

  13. While playing a PBEM game with Lt. Bull a strange occurrence happened that both of us feel should be addressed on the forum.

I had a bazooka team nicely concealed in a fochole beside a road in the 'Last Defence' scenario. A German H/T rumbles down the road and comes into the target range of the bazooka team which pleases me. Then, low and behold, the team jumps up runs into the open field and takes a shot at the H/T! They miss and are consequently killed instantly by returning MG fire from the H/T.

Has this happened to anyone else? I have had Schrecks fired from foxholes so it seems strange that a Bazooka team would do that.

In CC3 if you ignored men they did strange things like running into the open to be massacred...now I have seen it in CM!

Maybe this is just a glitch in the beta demo and will not in the final product...overall the game is excellent.

  14. If you read the the different forums for Close Combat 4 you will find a good majority of the better CC players like Mick, Cappy, Reiryc for example really like the game and rate it equal if not better than CC2.

Once the patches come out to fix some glaring problems CC4 will be certainly a good game to own...

I also enjoy the CM beta demo immensely and and got it on order...I enjoy playing both games a lot smile.gif

  15. This was probably discussed before but will there be an option in the final release of CM to have the crew of a tank or other AFV bail out of the vehicle if you feel there lives are in peril?

    Reason:

I am playing the Chance Encounter scenario by email and I have a StuG immobilized facing the wrong way with an American strong Flank attack in progress. Hopeless to stop it my poor StuG crew were in grave peril and I couldn't get them out of their vehicle! Eventually the Stug was hit by a Sherman AP shell and the crew then bailed out taking casualties while they raced in the open under withering MG fire to cover.

  16. The CC4 demo isn't all that great but the game itself is fantastic (Atomic should of used the Bastogne map in the demo)! The AI isn't that smart sometimes..CM is so much superior in that aspect, but playing someone online is the ultimate in Real Time gaming.

Combat Mission as far as turn-based games goes will also be tremendous game. I am really enjoying the beta demo.

I am just happy that we now have a couple of great games to play.
