  1. The Japanese army during WWII tried to make a bullet proof vest but it was poorly designed. It was very similar to a steel cuirass but I think the plate was cast iron. Heavy and not capable of stopping .30 cal from a carbine or a .45.
  2. body armor really has come a long way since then.
  3. Now that's a good way to handle anti - artillery support.
  4. That's good but what about those with G4 processors and which models? All best Patrick
  5. It's easy to speculate about turning our backs on Israel to appease the Muslims but would it work? Would the rabid Islamists then be reasonable enough to deal with and would they then back down from their idealogy of hate towards the US or the Western style democracies? I doubt that very much. Islamists are politico's using their twisted vision of religion to sway the masses into doing their handiwork of chaos and destruction for a greater Islamic revival. The use of religion and blaming the ills of the Arab world onthe US and Israel are just part of the equation for the return of a pan islamic nation. That is the reality of islamic realpolitik. Now for Syria its a secular country that manpulates the politics of the region the old fashioned way, assasination and corruption. They'll use the Islamic card when they get cornered or desperate tothe point of striking back at the West and then say, "huh...wasn't me!" All best Patrick
  6. I stand corrected after re-reading the link - still very impressive seeing the women in combat!
  7. Yeah I was thinking of that very incident as well of female MP's saving thew day in that ambush. I think I read about it in the New York Times and that female NCO kicked butt. Driving her hummer into a insurgent infested trench to get into it and single-handedly clearing it out. Pretty impressive by any account. Considering the situation where the female soldiers are in vehicles and not running around with 100 pound packs in the game there wouldn't be any physical penalties to notice between her male counterparts in a cmsf battle. All best Patrick
  8. It would be interesting if CMSF could replicate a re-supply of troops during combat. Supposing when the troops have expended their ammo during a 20 minute firefight and are surrounded by hostiles it wouldn't be that easy to rescue or re-supply as in Blackhawk down. It would also expand the detail of CMSF if that could be coded in for supply drops or Stryker supply and rescue run. All best Patrick
  9. Ok that's understandable. However it apears that the various types of anti-sniping devices being used is for more than just the lone sniper ambush. That units on the ground were actively looking for the devices to enhance their defense and response time to any attacks. I lost the thread where I read about the latest device which relied not on acoustics but on lasers/thermals(?) to pinpoint with greater accuracy than those using acoustics. Anyway suffice to say that the devices don't merit including into the game. All best Patrick
  10. Will this be simulated? Artillery radar would certainly be available for the brigade but down to what level? Anti -sniping both acoustic and thermal are in use in Iraq and from what little I've read about it both are accurate and have enhanced counter-fire back to the sniper position with high accuracy. Certainly for defense at the base and from what I understand portable thermal devices are taken on mobile patrols and convoys. Or will this be insignificant as far as CMSF gameplay is concerned? All best Patrick
  11. With what is happening at the UN tensions are certainly rising over Syria's possible involvement in the Hariri assasination. If Syria is found guilty what then? Scapegoats will be found to exonerate the real masterminds of the bombing and the world community will be appeased and Syria embarassed but not really punished for its transgression. Hopefully Syria will be left politically impotent to commit another crime. However this whole episode may just lead her leaders to do something totally stupid like sponsoring a terrorist act which would make CMSF a reality. Al best Patrick
  12. Just out of couriousity why is the Stryker mortar carrier not using a more modern breech loaded type? Is it just a cost savings? Which is actually more efficient as the Brits uses the breech loading variant. On the MGS I doubt they'll ever get it to work unless they make it into an assault type vehicle with a fixed gun. Besides the MGS can't fight modern MBT's except from ambush positions. They do have the ATGM variants and javelin's to tackle heavy tanks so a high velocity 105 seems pointless. They could make do with a low velocity 105 for bunker busting only. All best Patrick
  13. Why bother to destroy the M1 since the enemy wouldn't be able to make use of it anyway? I would think it would be better to let them tow it away themselves and just follow them to wherever they tow the thing to and blow everyone up around it. As for the M1 being destroyed by 25mm DU rounds doesn't that mnean friendly fire? I doubt the insurgents have easily available DU rounds available even if for 23mm AA guns. Definitely the M1 isn't the best vehicle for urban warfare but it wasn't meant for street fighting I believe although it should be capable for whatever threat is at hand. Al best Patrick
  14. Whoa! Having been away for a couple of days from this forum I was very surprised at how this thread seemed to be going downhill with all the sniping going on between a few of the posters. Glad it's turned the corner to being civil again. Still to put the question of how politics will affect rules of engagement and the parameters of winning or losing in a scenario... will it matter at all or not a whit? From what I've read on this Stryker vehicle judging from the pros and cons and how it actually handles in the real world the vehicle seems to be doing the job. The only thing doubtful is whether they'll ever really make an operable MGS out of it with the gun they want. All best Patrick All best Patrick
  15. All in all the Stryker seems to be doing the job its supposed to be doing from what I can see from the real world examples given by the men in the field. All best Patrick
  16. Considering how political modern wars are these days for strategic realism in a tactical game it has to be hovering around like god over the battlefield? With news 24/7 and this being a UN force the politcal spectre and how it afects command on the ground would make for at the very least an intellectual aspect of cmsf although something very difficult and unusual to reproduce. I guess this would be effected by rules of engagement. All best Patrick
  17. Back to Lebanon. Does anyone know why Lebanon is important to Syria? Was it ever a province under Syrian rule or is it just a case of Syria wantig to extend it's sphere of influence in the region? Regarding the CIA it never directly supported any Afghan guerilla group with cash or weapons. At least for most of the war. If I remeber correctly US spooks were in direct contact with the various factions as observer's/ spies covering the Afghan Soviet War they made their notes, recommendations and shared that to the ISI to do the shopping and distributions. A lot of the money that was funding the Afghan guerilla's came from the MiddleEast but the US encouraged the Saudi's , Kuwaiti's etc. to be generous (although in hindsight they were more than willing to fund the guerillas without US proding). What the US should have done is make sure the Middle East funds weren't going to extremists but that was something way beyond their control at that time. Don't forget also that towards the end of the Soviet conflict the US did supply stinger missles to the rebel's and those stocks came directly from US stockpiles in Germany and the States. So one would have to consider who actually trained the guerilla's in the use of the missles. I doubt if the Pakistani's were doing the training. As for OBL none of those stinger's were ever given to his group. GSX. That's a good point re. Saddam should have been executed on capture but that's the easy way out. At least for myelf bring him to trial may be arduous and a pain to suffer listening to Saddam defend himself, but it is necessary for the Iraqi's, the region and ultimately the world to realize that justice can be meted out to criminals like Saddam. To have had him killed out of spite would have made him a martyr automatically to the Arab world. Now if he's prosecuted and sentanced by his own people no one can fault that as it would be the will of the nation doing the punishment. My thoughts only. Patrick
  18. Falco. LOL. that's was good. What's going in Syria/Lebanon makes the backstory for CMSF all the more relevant and reason to keep Syria as the point of action. My thoughts at least. All best Patrick
  19. Ok that's understandable. However in CMBB terms when troops are exhausted they are easier to panic. Is the morale factor in cmsf the same as cmbb? As the parameter's for troops panicking in cmsf would be different5 because US troops are better educated, veteran troops with better training, communications and support. How is all that taken into account? Or would US troops never panic in cmsf? All best Patrick
  20. Lebanon certainly isn't a US protectorate but with US interests in that region very high you can see the process of "realpolitik" as it's played today. Already there have been skirmishes between US and Syrian troops on the Iraqi /Syria border with Syriuan troops KIA. Rice's response by not saying no to military action against Syria is a polite form of brinkmanship. Warning Syria in an oblique way to reign in it's ambitions in Lebanon. In regards to switching SF to another Mid East scenario that would be a shame as Syria would be quite an interesting opponent to fight against. Would Iran be suitable? There's always the scenario of taking out their nuclear plants before they're capable of making a nuke. I don't think a real war with Iran would be over as quickly as Iraq. As for CMSF to change to a hunt for Bin Laden that wouldn't be very interesting. That's an intelligence/police action game with very little actual combat fighting or tactics involved.
  21. Watching CNN's breaking news this morning onthe UN investigation of the Lebabese former PM Hariri the Syrians and their Lebanese cohorts were seriously implicated inthe assassination. Sec of Stayte C. Rice wouldn't say how far the US would go to punishing Syria (using force wasn't out of the question). Personally I doubt that the US would invade Syria but the writing is on the wall that if the situation permits taking the "crusade into Syria isn't far-fetched. all best Patrick
  22. Thanks for all the replies. Learned quite a lot from all the posts. So in actual game play then US infantry in CMSF would be heavy infantry and move as fast as a CMBB AT rifle team? It would also take repeated hits to put it out of action (KIA/WIA). So in a running fight exhaustion helps influence on the negative of the pysch aspect of the troops. So would they panic faster because of their state of exhaustion? Seems complicated or is this abstracted? all best Patrick
  23. How will pesonal body armor be modeled in cmsf? Is there a pysch boost to troops using it? And just how heavily armored are individual soldier's(US)when they go out on operations? If an armored soldier is hit but not wounded does he get up immediately or after a few minutes (stunned)? Watching cnn troops seem to have diffeerent levels of body armor. Why is that? I though the US Army supplies everything on a standardized basis or is this a wrong assumption? Patrick
