  1. Ho-ho! After my last post I went back and did it all again... ran TechTool Pro and Deluxe on my OS 9 HD, zapped the PRAM and rebuilt the desktop, and went to Apple and rechecked for new drivers. The nVidia driver update is now listed as version 3.0v1.1, and notes a modification as of 12/10/02, with an original release date of 4/03/02. I don't know if they actually changed the drivers or just the documentation... But, after doing all the above and installing the drivers, the lag seems to be fixed! I tried starting and playing and quitting CMBO multiple times and it never slowed down (even with some big scenarios) and other apps (such as Netscape) which used to get all choppy and lag after playing CMBO now seem to work fine! I haven't tested CMBB yet but will do so and post if there's a problem.
  2. FWIW, I did all those things Karl mentioned and none of them seemed to help me. I even went so far as to reformat the HD (I run 9.2.2 on a separate volume) and did a total reinstall of everything and it didn't help.
  3. Several people suggested this when I reported this problem a few months ago. I don't think it's the issue, though, because I've started CMBO or CMBB, set up a game, and then quit immediately after placing my units, and it still results in the lag. FWIW, it doesn't happen when I play either game on my PB G3/400 running with OS 9.0.4, but does on the desktop system running 9.2.2. After I tried everything, I just gave up and assumed it was some inaccessible driver/system problem, and so now I just reboot as needed. (I also note, though, that if I stay within the CMBO or CMBB app, the lag doesn't occur, i.e. it develops only after playing and then QUITTING and then restarting.)
  4. On a G4/933 with the stock nVidia GeForce4 MX (64MB) both CMBO and CMBB look good, and I haven't had any problems with smoke, fog, etc. Dave
  5. I am running CMBB on a separate partition with OS 9.2.2, with the Classic RAVE extension removed. Other extensions that are present and are probably important (though I haven't specifically tested) include QD3DCustomElements, Quickdraw 3D, and Quickdraw 3D RAVE. If you don't have those, Dennis, you should reinstall them and see if that helps. Dave

Not a bad idea to send an email to Apple support, too, politely pointing out how nice it would be if they would make the Classic RAVE extension fully functional, so that we COULD play CM under Classic mode in OS X. It sure would be nice if Apple recognized the value of developers like Battlefront/BigTimeSoftware, who actually do their primary work on the Mac OS.
  7. Sigh... Posting the non-news that CM still doesn't run under Classic RAVE with the headline "Mac OS 10.2 & CM-Bad News" is, I think, pushing a negative impression of how CMBO (and CMBB) work on Macs. As of now, they work fine. For the foreseeable future, they will work fine. As for your other point... I was offering advice to Mac users who may not be as knowledgeable as you, and who might have read your post in this new thread and gotten the idea that they wouldn't be able to play CM on their Macs. I do not see the point of wailing and moaning about possible future problems with Mac/CM compatibility. They work together now, they will work together a month from now when CMBB comes out. Past that, who knows? Leave it up to Charles, Steve and company. For now, shaddup and play!

I was mostly just being cranky about seeing yet another thread about 'CMBO/CMBB can't be played on the Mac', when that just simply isn't true. Play CMBO on your Mac now, and play CMBB on your Mac when it arrives next month, and let the future take care of itself and quit losing sleep over what Apple may or may not do...

  10. This is silly. Of course it "does not solve our problem". Nobody would expect it to. One more time: the way to run CM is to put it in a different partition (or better yet, on a second hard drive) set up with your favorite version of OS 9 and run it from there. Voila! CM in all its glory, plus your other apps that may not run well in OS X/Classic.
  11. When you restart in OS9, I think you still have to disable the Classic Rave extension. (That extension is apparently the reason why CM won't run in Classic mode in OSX, but it also screws things up in various ways if you leave it active when you boot in OS9.)
  12. I've used Ambrosia's Snapz and Snapz Pro products with an old Voodoo card, a Radeon, and now a GeForce and they've worked well.

  14. One other thing to check... Are you folks running CM 'virgin', as it comes off the CD, or are you running with heavily modded graphics file? I've had text disappearance problems similar to those mentioned after putting some new mods in. Otherwise, by having OS 9 on a separate boot drive, I've had no problems getting full 3D on my G4/933 (excepting the 'slowdown' problem I posted about earlier).
  15. Just upgraded to a new Mac (933MHz with GeForceMX4 and 768 MB RAM). I have OS 9.2.2 installed on a second hard drive to run my old stuff and OS X on a whole different drive, so to play CM I boot from the OS 9 drive. Initially the game will run just fine, but if I quit and come back to it later (after running other apps such as Internet Explorer, Appleworks, or even if I simply come back after the computer has been asleep) CM runs very poorly. The mouse pointer movement is choppy, scrolling the map (by keyboard or game controls) is slow and choppy, and general response to keyboard commands is slow. Once I restart the computer it's fine again till I use other apps or sleep as noted above. I've tried adjusting memory allocation up and down, have virtual memory off, and am running OS 9.2.2 without any new funky extensions or add-ons. Previously, I was running the game on an old desktop G3/233 and a Powerbook G3/400, both with OS 9.0.4 and I'd never seen this problem. Any ideas or suggestions?
  16. How heavily 'modded' are your game files? I experienced similar problems awhile ago when I had modded buildings past the limit the Mac files are happy with... Reverting to earlier graphics files cleared up the problem.

  18. I searched for this but couldn't find any info... A friend just bought CM and can't get the CD to work. He say that he gets the 'this is not a Macintosh disk' message. We've tried troubleshooting in all the usual ways to no avail. His other CD's seem to read just fine. He uses OS 8.6, has 128 MB RAM, and whatever original hardware is otherwise in an original iMac. Any thoughts or suggestions? (Or if I missed it in the search, just point me in the right direction). Thanks. Dave

I usually set the force type to armor, play with 700-900 points, and then randomize everything else I can. With that sort of setup, both sides seem to have usually gotten a good mix of various AFV's, HT's or other support vehicles, reasonable infantry and supporting troops. And there're none of these bizarre, gamey force mixes I see people writing and complaining about. I think that a ladder set up with similar guidelines would be great, and would prevent the worst of the ahistorical, gamey battles. Dave

  24. Just found this posted... should be good background and 'big picture' information for 'CM'... The "War Diaries: Utah Beach to Cherbourg (June 6 - July 1, 1944)" feature has been posted to <<http://www.ebattlebook.com>>. This feature commemorates the 56th Anniversary of the Normandy Invasion. Coincidently, June 6, 2000 falls on a Tuesday, the same as June 6, 1944. "Part 1: After Action Reports" simulates the pace of the Utah Beach to Cherbourg campaign by posting the official after-action reports and situation maps at the end of each day between June 6 and July 1.
