  1. Ah, the joy of an understanding partner! smile.gif

My wife enjoys a good boardgame (History of the World, Civilization etc) and we've played some horror/adventure PC games together (Phantasmagoria, Gabriel Knight), but when I try to explain the fascination of wargaming, she looks at me with sympathy and says "That's nice, dear" and quickly leaves the room.

One girl who used to be in our roleplaying group is quite fond of strategy/war games though, so they do exist! cool.gif

Mrs. von Shrad: I feel that I am a very lucky man, and I do hope that Mr. von Shrad realizes how lucky he is! smile.gif

  2. I have tried searching for this, but I couldn't find any match.

Does anyone know how long it usually takes to print, say 100.000 CDs from the master (i.e. "gold") CD?

    BTS:

How is the game going to be shipped to Europa? UPS?

(I am trying to figure out how long I have to wait after the new demo is released wink.gif)

  3. I have a trusty old Dimond Monster 3D with 4Mb RAM (since I sometimes play games that can't or won't use my brand new Savage S4). My only problems (and small ones at that) is:

    1) in the startup screens (intro, briefing) I get a rectangular "hole" where the mouse-pointer started when I move it the first time

    2) in the game itself, the text/info field in the bottom of the screen is filckering.

I assume that these errors are due to the fact that this was a beta demo, and that the final game won't have them. And even if I do get them in the final game, I won't care because this game is so good! smile.gif

  4. Griffin, I was (mostly) kidding. We usually have only one type of weather (from days to several weeks), but sometimes (especially duing the late autumn and winter) we can have sun, rain and snow during a day as well as calm to windy, but the temperatur seldoms fluctuate more than 5 to 10 deg. This type of weather is probably common in most of scandinavia, but happens more often in the north along the coast.

And with that, we conclude todays session on meteorology in the north smile.gif

  5. I have done some search on this topic and here is what I believe is the final verdict smile.gif

    Maximum mapsize is 3 x 5 km.

No limit on force size, BUT having more than 1.5 battalion (200+ units) on each side is going to requre some serious hardware.

  6. The "Blackadder" series was a smashing hit here in Norway. It's only natural I guess. You Brits are mostly decendants of the vikings, so you inherited the humour from us... smile.gif

But I do look forward to hear Sgt. Jenkins' "Yessah! Right on, Sah!" Oh, this game is going to be so **** (if you'll pardon my french) good!!!

  7. Hmmf! Grumpy-grumpy!

Read the other posts on this bord, will you?!

No, sorry! I'm a nice guy, really! smile.gif

Yes, there will be a new demo when the program "goes gold" (i.e. the master CD is ready). That demo will be just as the real game (not like the beta-demo which is out now). It won't be the complete game of course! wink.gif

  8. In the begining there was PBM ("play by mail" games). You paid, say $1 US (or whatever) pr turn, which you sent to the GM (game master) using standard mail. He or she then (after collecting the turns from all players) then implamented all the orders and sent a report back to the players. This could be strategy games, roleplaying, sports etc. etc.

After the internet made it possible to quickly send data to each other, it was only natural that the PBM community used it instead of ordinary mail. Still, PBeM games are turnbased games.

Online games are often used to describe games where the user playes a game in realtime with other human players on the internet. The most common are probably action games (like "Quake", "Half-Life", "Rainbow 6" etc), realtime strategy games ("Command and Conquer", "Total Annihilation" etc), flight sims and many other types.

To find out more, I suggest you perform a search on the web for PBeM games ("pbem" and/or "online game" should give you quite a number of hits smile.gif). You can also go to

    http://www.cdmag.com/Home/content/online.html

and use that as a starting point on your road to pbem knowledge. There are probably loads of other sites as well (and someone here is bound to know a few).

    Good luck!

  9. Perhaps Steve or some of the alpha/beta-testers could help me a little bit.

I am planning on converting a large miniature battle I once played to CM. The map was roughly 6 x 12 km and IIRC that's bigger than CM's maps (???). Anyway, is there a way of linking larger maps together, or would I simply have to create the maps beforehand and then adjust the forces based on the outcome of earlier battles?

I appologize if I'm flogging dead horses, but the search routine didn't reveal any smile.gif

  10. As I haven't played LD in PBeM I can't really say. I do try to the best of my ability to play fair, but simply knowing where and when those Hellcats will arive, is probably affecting me in some way. It could even be "well, next turn they're here. My tank commanders would probably have started that flanking manouver now, but my opponent may see that as a move based on knowing about those Hellcats. Best to leave them here in the open for another turn"

Perhaps some of us could have set up a service, where two players who wants to play a pbem game tells us roughly what forces and terrain they would like, and we then create the scenario? The two players would still have to trust each others not to take a peek at the entire scenario first. Hmmm, have to think more about that one. smile.gif

  11. Erich, do you know where in Norway your "Opa" served?

Several norwegians took part in the fighting on the german side since many where afraid of the "Bolshevism" (and probably other reasons as well). I am not sure if there was any norwegians who fought on the EF on the russian side, but I would be surprised if there wasn't.

Greg, great piece ("The Holy War")! Are there any translations availabe (or ... would you? smile.gif)

  12. Mattias (söta bror smile.gif), I don't think it's BTS pricing structure that are critisized here, but more the "unfairness" that we over here have to pay our greedy governments mucho money in order to get some quality games. Let's face it, the original $45 has swelled into $100 by the time I get my sweaty hands on it! I guess you don't often buy games at 700 SEK either smile.gif

Now, if BTS got all those money, I wouldn't have complained, but more than 50% goes directly to my government! Hmf! frown.gif

Oh well, at least I know that I get quality for my money!

  13. Just read the manifesto. Good points! I sure hope this will have an impact on, well, all actors in the game. I.e. a year from now it suddenly dawns on a lot of people that CM has sold a lot and generated good money for BTS. It just took a little longer than your average Doom clone, which most 3D games after Doom has been (helmet - check, kevlar west - check, flamingproof attitude - check smile.gif ).

Some Q for the good folks at BTS:

How many copies do you need to sell to break even (or is that classified), how many copies do you hope to sell and how many pre-orders have you got?

  14. The T-35 had also notoriously thin armor and it's only achievement was looking good in parades! smile.gif Just kidding, but I think the T-35 did have so thin armor that it wasn't thought to be combat worthy and thus saw little action.

I don't think there was many multiple turret tanks in action in western europe during 1944 and 1945. I could however be dead wrong, and if so, I guess some Grognards will correct me pretty quick! smile.gif
