1.
quote:
It took a LONG time for the POZIT fuse to be used in land combat, to keep them from being captured by Axis forces. For a long time the shells were issued only to naval units, if I remember correctly.

If I remember correctly they were released for use in Europe in reaction to the battle of the bulge. ------------------ If something cannot be fixed by hitting it or by swearing at it, it wasn't worth saving anyway.
 2. Thanks for the reply. Recon by fire isn't the most effective way to kill enemy troops but if it causes one green squad to cut and run or reveal themselves by firing back too early then it's worth the ammo. ------------------ If something cannot be fixed by hitting it or by swearing at it, it wasn't worth saving anyway.
 3. Will we be able to order our units to engage a treeline or building that we suspect is holding enemy troops. I imagine most infantry type units don't carry enough ammo to do this, but vehicle mounted weapons should carry enough to do it quite often. I believe it was even SOP for tank units especially if they didn't have infantry close by.

Doug Beman said:
quote:
I plan on using the "HUNT" command I've seen on the screenshots in conjunction with "MOVE" commands--move half a group of tanks individually in a semblance of formation, while the other half HUNTs from cover, then reverse the roles. Seems the best way to keep tanks together while not blinding them.

What you’ve just describes is bounding overwatch, which is one of the most common ways to move a unit of tanks when you expect contact. We always practiced the various formations, but when push came to shove we moved either in column with our guns as far to the side as the terrain would allow, or in line with all guns scanning to the front. In a world war two tank with an unstabilized gun, the gunner would have been almost useless while on the move. With an unstabilized gun and turret it is very nearly impossible to scan when the tank is moving cross country since the magnification of the sight exaggerates the motion of the vehicle. Another difficulty is keeping the turret oriented in the correct direction as the tank maneuvered, since it is rarely possible nor advisable to drive for long in a straight line when going cross country and it is extremely easy to become disoriented as the vehicle twists and turns. ------------------ If something cannot be fixed by hitting it or by swearing at it, it wasn't worth saving anyway. 5. Steve Said
quote:
it was not hard to lose one. I recently read an account where 2 or 3 were knocked out from a range of almost 3000km by a platoon of M-10s.

Wow that's almost 1800 miles, where were the M10's engaging from?
 6. Battlefields are incredibly messy places. My unit(3/37 AR) went into reserve after the second day of the ground war and I was amazed at the trail of trash and junk that a unit in combat or even headed into combat leaves behind. A brigades worth of combat vehicles leaves a trail of empty ration containers, ammo boxes, shell casings, duds and wrecked and burnt out vehicles that has to be seen to be believed. That said, I think it would be cool if CM could show that, but until they release a video card for a Cray super computer I doubt that it's really practical. ------------------ If something cannot be fixed by hitting it or by swearing at it, it wasn't worth saving anyway.
 7. BTS how will/does the scenario editor work? You mentioned in one of the campaign threads that you can generate random scenarios. How will this be done? I assume I can enter time date and force size, but can I also assign a mission to a force such as attack, defend, advance or delay? Also, how will the terrain for the scenario be specified? The reason I ask is that I have an idea for campaigns that would be based on individual scenarios. Plus, I just want to know
 8. I was reading some posts on the Heavy Metal forum and someone posted a link to their home page and from that page I found the following page. Thought you guys (BTS) might like to take a look at it. http://www.tir.com/~tankm4/weasel.htm ------------------ If something cannot be fixed by hitting it or by swearing at it, it wasn't worth saving anyway.
 9.
quote:
Why not make 8, individually balanced campaigns, with a company sized force for each instead. Play one, then play the second, and so on. There you go. You just took a company through 8 campaigns

There you go. If you want to follow company B 37th armor through the whole war just make a series of campaigns that cover the battles it fought in historically. You could even have their skill levels increase for each campaign. Something like this would require a ton of research but I'm sure someone or other will do it. One question about campaigns that I haven't seen asked. Will we be able to play a campaign only against the AI or can both sides be player controlled? 10. BTS, If I hadn't already preordered, your description of the campaign system would have convinced me to. This sounds exactly what I am looking for in a campaign. I really like the idea of simulating a day or so of combat over a fairly large area. I always thought the way SP did campaigns was kind of pointless. I want to be able to exploit a success or be forced to recover from a set back. As far as identifying with my "core" units it really doesn't matter to me if the ten or so battles I fight with them are called Caen, Market Garden, Bastogne or Caen 0600, 0800, and 1000. I still have the same group for those ten battles and if Sgt Jenkins and his platoon don't magically improve from green to vetran to elite over the course of the battles, so what. If I want to suceed I'll have to learn how to use that unit in a way that makes sense for that unit's level and type. Much more fun than just making sure that a platoon survives to be promoted before the next battle. ------------------ If something cannot be fixed by hitting it or by swearing at it, it wasn't worth saving anyway.
 11. I would think that rather than installing the PC in the john a better choice would be a keyboard/vidio splitter. Depending on model you can have monitors and keyboards deployed throughout the house. ------------------ If something cannot be fixed by hitting it or by swearing at it, it wasn't worth saving anyway.
 12.
quote:
HQs are made up of men, so they are on foot. They are depecited as a single figure with a pistol (Sr. HQs look the same as Platoon ones now, but we hope to change that). If you want to stick them in a vehicle, go right ahead. The scenario's designer decides what vehicles are given to the player. So if you have no Jeep or Kübelwagen for your HQs, tough Probably got shot up or ran out of gas on the way to the front!

Will armor platoon and company Hqs be tank mounted or are all HQs treated as infantry?
 13. Have you defined how a vehicle will assume a hull down position. I think it should be relatively easy to do when you set up your forces but how will you do this once vehicles begin to move. Will I have to set a stopping point near the crest of a hill that I hope is hull down or will I be able to issue a seek hull down command?
 14.
quote:
Same goes for the inverse problem: If the tank commander can see the enemy, but the driver cannot, then your tank is obviously hull down

You could also be turret down in that situation. It is possible for the tank commander to see over a hill without unmasking the turret. I suppose you could designate 3 points hull top, turret top and main gun and use those to determine the posture of the tank. However it works I'm sure the math would give me a bad headache. Good thing Grants and Lees weren't in Normandy. ------------------ If something cannot be fixed by hitting it or by swearing at it, it wasn't worth saving anyway.
 15. One place you can go for information on all things tank related is WWW.Tankers.net. It is a web discussion board for armor enthusiasts. ------------------ If something cannot be fixed by hitting it or by swearing at it, it wasn't worth saving anyway.
 16. Will white phosphorus smoke rounds and grenades have the chance to inflict casualties or lower the morale of units in areas they land in?
 17. Will smoke in the same location as a unit degrade los both into and out of the location?
 18. Do I really have to send an e-mail to insure that the Joneses will be represented in the American army? ------------------ If something cannot be fixed by hitting it or by swearing at it, it wasn't worth saving anyway.
 19. How will airstrikes be assigned to a side? If you have air support, will you start out with a fixed number of strikes available or will you have a percentage chance to get an airstrike when you call for it? Another option I guess, would be a percentage chance based system that reduces the the percentage an amount for every successful call for support. ------------------ If something cannot be fixed by hitting it or by swearing at it, it wasn't worth saving anyway.
