  1. Oh ok I thought it was Krout like rout pout or Trout? I'll ask again is the use of the term Kraut (from sauerKraut I presume) is offensive to anyone here? So far as I can tell no one has been warned or banned for the use of the word Kraut on this board? Hell its from Hogan's Heroes they called them Krauts all the time on that show -tom w [This message has been edited by aka_tom_w (edited 02-25-2001).]
  2. ok here's a good idea Lots of players actually prefer the Allies In fact I'll take the British anytime. Now if the Krouts are so good why don't you find someone (and there are plenty of us) who enjoys playing the Allies and see if this is a game of luck and if the Allies are really so crappy? Any good player can win with either the Allies or the krouts. Pick me, I'll take the Allies and you can buy what uber Krout tanks and SMG squads you like. I'm sure I'm not the only Allied player here who would be happy to accomondate you. So, its SIMPLE, don't play anyone else until you have won two are three times in a row as the Germans then come back here and tell us the Allies are crap and I promise you someone here will find a way to beat you in an even Meeting engagement with the Allies. How's that for fair??? -tom w P.S. does the use of the term Krout, offend anyone here? I figure it is the same as "Yank" and so it is not intended to offend. 3. I think it is VERY questionable to even speculate if this little "trick" or more likely Fluke shot is modeled.... But What if...... Suppose the JPz-IV loaded HE to dispatch the Jeep (not that unlikely) Suppose the .50 cal in the jeep fired the at the gun of the JPz-IV (ok that makes sense) Now the FLUKE part, suppose a .50 cal round somehow found its way down the gun barrel of the JPz-IV and the HE round was in the breach HE round goes off in the breach ... KA BOOM K-KILL! for the Jeep Ok I think that might have happend ONCE in all of the action in all if WW II but it is a REMOTE possibilty for a .50 cal MG kill, no? Comments? -tom w
  4. is this a Joke? Is that you Private JOKER!? Or is he just trolling? Is this the same guy the "invented the internet" Ooops I mean in invented the alt.combatmission newsgroup? Maybe we should have an military COUP! and takeover the current administration over there.. (in that OTHER part of cyberspace) forget this voting and election and democracy nonsense, we still like to take power the old fashion way, with military might and by killing those that gets in the WAY! (All in good humour ) -tom w
  5. Maybe I have not looked at this situation closely enough but I usually prefer to take the more experienced units. My experience with sharp shooters is that they are worth the extra points. I find that tank crews are usually worth the extra cost. I rarely "buy" units but in scenario set ups if the comptuer is to buy I like to set the experience level to high. In scenario's I design I like to provide a wide range of experiences for both players. When "buying" units I have been of the opinion in the past that the extra experience level(s) "should" be worth more than the extra cost in points spent, but I am open minded and perhaps I am mistaken, and that if reg tank crews do indeed get the first shot off faster I should think that factor should be seriously considered. interesting question? Any other comments? -tom w [This message has been edited by aka_tom_w (edited 02-24-2001).]
  6. I think the most relavent thing to learn is that Just about Any tank can and will kill just about ANY other tank if they get GOOD clean shot at the flank or the rear aspect of the target. Simple eh? That might be an over simplification (OK ) BUT it saves memorizing all he numbers. Getting a flank shot is not the be all and end all of this game but it SURE helps in a sticky situation. I think it is VERY wise to just look at what you are commanding. Focus on the stats of the AFV's you have under your immediate command at the time (select the unit and hit return or enter) for their stats. Then once you have positively ID'd the enemy AFV hit return on their stats and look and see if your available firepower can effectively penetrate his armour. Easy! Don't forget if the "fluke factor" of the "weak point penetration" which maybe all you have left to hope for (or a lucky "shreck or 'zook kill) near the end of the battle. I would say don't bother memorizing stats and figures, just focus on what you have on hand. UNLESS of course you prefer to BUY your forces (not Everyone does that you know) then you do really need to know what all the numbers and designations mean and what are there relative strengths and weaknesses in relation to the cost in points, I think some here specialize in buying the best "bang for the buck" and I think they have emphemistically been refered to as "cherry pickers" . Good luck -tom w [This message has been edited by aka_tom_w (edited 02-22-2001).]
  7. I can't wait to hear that sound! I ahve been playing this game since the beta demo days and I NEVER heard that gear crunching sound. anyone have any idea what is .wav file number is? I wnat to open it up and hear it just be because I'm curious to know what it sounds like? Thanks -tom w
  8. no problem on that one CMBO models the effect of the FULL blast radius of all HE rounds. Friendly fire is modeled quite well in this respect. The blast effect will of HE rounds can't tell the good guys from the bad guys. So self destruction and self immobolization happen to inexperienced players sometimes. Glad you like it! -tom w
  9. Its also called a "cross over " cable depending on where you are from. It is a special ethernet cable for connecting two computers with NO hub for head to hhead it works GREAT! two laptops and a cross over cable and its like "battle ship" in the 21st century CMBO head to head via laptops and thats the way to enjoy this game with a skilled opponent (you can enjoy beating!), now thats the way to enjoy playing this game at its very finest! -tom w [This message has been edited by aka_tom_w (edited 02-22-2001).] [This message has been edited by aka_tom_w (edited 02-22-2001).]
  10. VERY WELL Written! I agree completely Thank you for taking the time and effort to express your opinion (and perhaps the opinions of many others here, myslef included) so eloquently and directly. Nice Job! -tom w [This message has been edited by aka_tom_w (edited 02-21-2001).]
  11. Perfect! I wonder if he'll show up and challenge somone who KNOWS how to Kick REAL Butt in CMBO to a TCP/IP match! -tom w
  12. I say ban HIM! ban him now and ban him out right! Sadly he will get one or two chances. I hope Matt is in a lousy mood and ban's his sorry little butt the minute he reads this thread. I have a VERY low tolerance level for spoiled brat rich whiny kids! be Gone, oh younger profane one! And yes there are rules here and one of them is NO profanity. -tom w [This message has been edited by aka_tom_w (edited 02-21-2001).]
  13. I have seen this as well It is very rare but Fast move way points do sometime get changed to reverse. It is a little disconcerting. Anyone else seen it. I play mostly the Allies so I have only seen it with allied tanks. -tom w
  14. They algorythms to determine hits and penetration. They seem to be very closely guarded trade secrets. BUT they are VERY accurate and based on REAL physics with a certian amount of random chance thrown in to make things interesting and unpredictable. you won't find any published reports or statements as to EXACTLY how they work, but some here have conducted gunnery range "experiments" in an attempt to retro engineer those equations and figure out how they work. YES and defeintely read what Rexord has to say he has been VERY active posting about this. If you know how armour pentration was modeled in the OLD AH game Tobruk then that is a good place to start to understand the inner workings of this game, only now you don't have to roll the dice to: a) see IF you hit anything? IF you if did hit WHERE did it hit? c) Depending on WHERE it hit DID it PENETRATE d) IF it DID Pentrate What DAMAGE did it cause? Trying playing Tobruk and rolling the dice 3 or 4 times for EVERY damn round your AFV's fire then you will KNOW what HUGE Break through this game REALLY is! -tom w [This message has been edited by aka_tom_w (edited 02-21-2001).]
  15. Context Frames is a term used in edcation to help the educator understand that when attempting to educate adult learners that they should expect a WIDE range of backgrounds and experiences and to consider this during preparation for teaching and while designing lesson plans. With this in mind and because there is such a wide audience here I thought I would post this and see what the 15-20 year old folks on this board have to say about it. If you are between 15 to 20 (+/- 2 years) old what do you think of these observations.... Do You Feel Old Yet???? Just in case you weren't feeling too old today, this will certainly change things. Each year the staff at Beloit College in Wisconsin puts together a list to try to give the faculty a sense of the mindset of that years' incoming freshmen. Here is this year's list: The people who are starting college this Fall across the nation were born in 1982. They have no meaningful recollection of the Reagan Era and probably did not know he had ever been shot. They were prepubescent when the Persian Gulf War was waged. Black Monday, 1987 is as insignificant to them as the Great Depression. There has been only one Pope. They were 11 when the Soviet Union broke apart and do not remember the Cold War. They have never feared a nuclear war. They are too young to remember the space shuttle blowing up. Tianamen Square means nothing to them. Bottle caps have always been screw off and plastic. Atari predates them, as do vinyl albums. The expression "you sound like a broken record" means nothing to them. They have never owned a record player. They have likely never played Pac Man and have never heard of Pong. They may have never heard of an 8 track. The Compact Disc was introduced when they were 1 year old. As far as they know, stamps have always cost about 33 cents. They have always had an answering machine. Most have never seen a TV set with only 13 channels, nor have they seen a black and white TV. They have always had cable. There has always been VCRs, but they have no idea what BETA is. They cannot fathom not having a remote control. They were born the year that the Walkman was introduced by Sony. Roller skating has always meant inline for them. Jay Leno has always been on the Tonight Show. They have no idea when or why Jordache jeans were cool. Popcorn has always been cooked in the microwave. They have never seen Larry Bird play. They never took a swim and thought about Jaws. The Vietnam War is as ancient history to them as WWI, WWII and the Civil War. They have no idea that Americans were ever held hostage in Iran. They can't imagine what hard contact lenses are. They don't know who Mork was or where he was from. They never heard: Where's the beef?, I'd walk a mile for a Camel, or de plane, de plane. They do not care who shot J. R. and have no idea who J. R. is. The Titanicwas found? They thought we always knew where it was. Michael Jackson has always looked white. Kansas, Chicago, Boston, America, and Alabama are places, not rock groups. McDonalds never came in styrofoam containers. There has always been MTV. They don't have a clue how to use a typewriter. Do you feel old yet? Pass this on to the other old fogies. 16. Hi Bruno totally unrelated to this thread (OT) Did you get my e-mail? I'm looking for an opponent for 7:00 pm EST tonight and YES I did already post in the "Looking for Opponents" thread and YES I will see who's on Matt's Chat-O-Love Server at 7:00 pm tonight. So Bruno can you play tonight? -tom w
  17. In that Thread Steve says this: posted 08-23-2000 04:05 AM Everybody... this has been covered about a dozen times before, even prior to the Beta Demo coming out. In a nutshell... 1. AT teams are, to a large degree, an abstraction. Flamethrowers, Bazookas, Panzershcrecks, and perhaps in practice PIATs were in fact manned by regular squad members. Panzerschrecks were also assigned to dedicated AT teams, in particular in Volksgrenadier and Pattern 45 Infantry divisions due to the lack of AT guns. 2. The assistant in such teams often caried a light small arm, usually carbine for the US and Kar98 for most German teams. The gunner had a pistol in all cases that I know of, and the assistant often did as well. 3. #2 applies to other team type weapons, including mortars, AT guns, etc. There are two problems with doing this in CM: 1. Coding. A huge quantity of code would have to be written to support this. What might seem simple to the gamer isn't always simple to the programmer. 2. Realism. Although the members of a team had small arms, how exactly do we determine who is in a position to use them in a given situation? With a 2 man team this is easier to do than with a 6 man team. Our proposed solution is a compromise, but simply hasn't been important enough (compared to other things) to warrent the work and cutting to the front of the line. The solution we came up with a long time ago was to give each team a generic self defense small arms capability based on headcount. This is something we do, eventually, intend on putting into the game. Steve
  18. Holy Crap! I MUST be doing something right. TWO times in ONE day someone has called me a bad name Like Bruno said, I think there is far too much profanity on this forum. Perhaps I would be wise to limit my exposure. NOT! -tom w [This message has been edited by aka_tom_w (edited 02-20-2001).]
  19. OK THat makes sense. ANd yes in earlier versions a squad of guys used to take out an HT by lobbing a grenade or two at it in less than a minute every time. So some of us here thought there had been a change and that something was different in v1.12 and that open top HT's and AFV's were now harder to take out with greanades in Close assault, but Matt and Charles have stated that nothing has changed. In any case v1.12 has been stated to be the final FINAL patch so this is now the way it is. thanks for the update and your version number. -tom w [This message has been edited by aka_tom_w (edited 02-20-2001).]
  20. If they are selling them for $45.00 US per copy and if they did sell between 200,000 to 250,000 copies (and I don't think that is unreasonable) then that means sales of between $9 and $11 million US. NOW that ROCKS!!! Great work I do hope that CMBO has huge sales figures like that. What a GREAT game!! Nice to see it so profitable too. Did Charles and Steve not state in an earlier interview that their up front development costs were about $250,000 US ? Anyone else remember that figure? NOW that's pretty good return on investment! -tom w
  21. HEY Kingfish! I think I'm really starting to enjoy your posts and your sense of HUMOUR! I'm now looking for your name on all posts just to see what new wit and humour will entertain me next! Keep up the good work. -tom w
  22. YEAH! Beginer's luck for SURE! Hey, jsut for the record we ahve all been noticing that v1.12 makes it harder to take HT's during close assualt. SO I wonder if he can tell us which version of the Software he is playing? Is it v1.11 or did he update to v1.12? Its no big deal really I was just curious. Thanks -tom w
  23. Did someone jsut call me a bad Name? Oh well ..... I was laughing at the at the "I'm at home with your girl friend" thing now I thought that was funny. OK .... So the SIT REP here is a student goofing off at school, playing on the the computer, on the internet posts here on this forum says something pretty much OFF topic.... so someone else pokes fun at him and I think its funny. (re: the girl friend says "Hi" thing) then someone else calls me a bad name ? do I have this right? AND no for the record I am not a student and I am not goofing off at school. Sorry to all the newbies I may have offended. Hope that clears it up. -tom w [This message has been edited by aka_tom_w (edited 02-20-2001).] [This message has been edited by aka_tom_w (edited 02-20-2001).]
