Aye it is massive - you can limit the view size and switch of the smoke that should make it a bit faster to move around. The map is all Charlie's doing, and it is a beautyOriginally posted by JC_Hare:30 000 points! I am having trouble just panning around!
I have to admit your map of Kharkov is very impressive.

Just uploaded new operation over at The Proving Grounds. Peiper's Bridge at Kharkov is the latest offering from Charlie and myself in the Blowtorch Battalion series.
In this operation the Blowtorch Battalion must fight through Kharkov to link up with Panzermeyer’s Kampfgruppe surrounded at the cemetery near the crucial Volchansk – Chuguyev crossroads.
Map size: 4000m x 2080m
Total points combined: 30 000
The map in this is a beauty and took Charlie ages to do. The map is based on historical versions Ukraine Maps and on pp. 22-3 of “After the Battle” 112 and, since much of Kharkov survived intact, on current maps found at Kharkov map and in printed form from Ukraine. We shortened the terrain by about 1/3 to fit the CMBB map. We made every effort to be as accurate as possible within the game’s limits to depict Kharkov, even using photos of city landmarks and streets where available.
Just a wee word of warning it is a big operation. Those with steam powered PCs might suffer some angst attempting to get this babay to go

Came across this website which has some great images I've never seen before. It may or may not be general knowledge but worth a gander at anyways. It's called The Silent Wall

Have you made sure you have added the patch to your CMBB game so it is the latest version?
Using a differant patched version of the game affects scenarios being recognised.

Hi Sturm
I'd echo the above points and add my own tuppence worth!
My first few battles in CM were a totally confusing and chaotic experience - a bit like combat except I was'nt scared and did'nt get killed! Just as well it is only a game.
I'd suggest as the others have above, to play small quick battles with few units and Fog OfWar (FOW - you can set this in the penultimate QB menu that will come up after chossing quick battle) set to 'none' or 'partial' That should let you see what the enemy AI is up to.
Playing at this level of FOW though is OK to learn the ropes, but the real buzz, and the more realistic IMHO, comes after mastering the basics when you start playing with extreme! Nothing beats gaily trundling along down a road to then have your units minced by an ambush!
Best of luck

Glad you enjoyed it - would you mind dropping me a line or posting a couple of comments re the result i.e Major Victory etc.. Thanks again for your taking the time to play it. Nice One!Originally posted by Shmavis:Hey, George! I played as the Germans against the AI, per your advice. It was a tough fight, too. Great work!

I've been using it now as well - like the realistic "irregular" look. I have a 19" TFT screen and also play at 1280 x 1024.
I especially like the brown winter grass. Great job!

He! He! Glad you enjoyed it. Sounds like it achieved what I was after which is a recon battle with a twist. I'll check out the comments over at TPG. Thanks again for playing it and for your kind feedback.Originally posted by Aragorn2002:I've posted some comments on the Proving Grounds ,George. I did enjoy this battle very much. I was pleasantly surprised by the toughness of my Hetzers and unpleasantly surprised by T-34/85's turning up out of the blue. Victory was mine, with full FOW, Computer Experience Bonus +2 and Play Balance Allied +50%, but my nerves will never be the same again.
Your briefing is, as always, superb and very informative. Thank you!

I thought "Panzergruppe" in German usage referred to a unit approximately the size of an Army (ie group of corps)? ie Panzergruppe Guderian, Panzergruppe Kleist...? </font>Originally posted by Michael Dorosh:</font><blockquote>quote:</font><hr />Originally posted by George Mc:
In this scenario the player is the commander of a kampfgruppe, consisting of a panzergruppe and armoured infantry company, which has been tasked with clearing a series of Soviet strongpoints situated on some low hills. Supporting the attack you have a lot of artillery and air support (Note: the Stuka pilots supporting you are very experienced and crack aircrew thus reducing the chance of friendly fire incidents).

Who you playing as? I've just finished it as a PBEM playing the Soviets and we both fought ourselves to a standstill! Great fight though.Originally posted by Shmavis:Wow, George. This should be a big help for me. I'm playing "Death of the Dnieper: Solowjewka" right now and it's been a tough fight. As soon as I'm finished with it, I'll try this one. Thanks for all your work!

It's done to represent prior recce actions so the German player knows the basic Soviet positions - just mind it is only recce info - not the whole picture...Originally posted by markshot:George,
I am getting ready to start playing.
The distant trenches are part of the Germans OOB as opposed to the Soviet. I am not sure if this is an oversight or you did that so that they would be known to the German player.
Be keen to hear how you get on.

Tank Battle Problem No3 Tanks in Combat Against Bunkers
Fictional with approx 6000 points combined (note there are a lot of high value units in this hence the high number of points).
Map size 960m x 960m
Set in August 1941 on the Eastern Front this scenario is based on a training situation outlined in "The German Tank Platoon in WWII: It's Training and Deployment" (published by The Nafziger Collection, and based on a document complied by the US Army from Original German Works).
As such it is designed as a training scenario for those new to commanding armour and infantry on the CM battlefield. It also has something to offer 'Grogs' looking for a quick combat 'fix'!
This is the third training lesson in a series based on the situations described in the above book; the first one TBP No1 Attack Against PAK covers attacking a strong anti-tank defence without any infantry or artillery support; TBP No 2 Point Platoon as you as a panzer platoon commander of the point platoon of a panzer company, encountering a blocking position based around a village defended by enemy forces equipped with anti-tank guns, machine guns and some light armour
This scenario is only for play as the German player against the Soviet AI.
Included in the scenario pack are two maps. One is a sketch map based on examples used in formal briefings by the Germans, and which is referred to in the briefing. The other is a topographical relief ‘Command Map’ of the CMBB battlefield.
You can get it here:-
As always feedback etc would be greatly appreciated

1945 - I guess the author is referring to the Allies. I'd noticed it as well in this article and never came across the Allies being referred to as the United Nations before.Originally posted by mkvi:when was united nations "founded"?

No I had'nt noticed that - hhmm.. dangerous waters out there methinks. I'll take another look at it....Originally posted by Aco4bn187inf:George Mc,
That is a very interesting combat memoir, and it contains a reminder that not every SS man volunteered for it, and that all sides did indeed commit war crimes. (Not to make an equavalence between the Allied project and the German one as a whole.)
Did you notice, though, that the contact email address on the introduction page of the site uses an acronym for one of Hitler's titles? Grofaz- Grossester Feldherr Alle Zeit (I may be misspelling it.) It would appear that the site is run by someone who admires or identifies with Hitler, and I do not trust any such person who sets himself up as an editor of historical material.
(By the way, I'm playing Schwerpunkt Glowaczow right now, and it is awesome!)
Glad you are enjoying Schwerpunkt - I'm currently playing Stuetzpunkt as the Soviets and having a bit of rough time!
I'd appreciate any feedabck where you are done with it?

Just don't advance a load of flamthrower SPW - set fire to the enemy held houses on that that side of the village, then find you can't get in cos all the houses are on fire effectively forming a nice wee barricade stopping your infantry moving into the village!! DOH!

New Scenario - Peiper's Bridge at Kharkov
in Combat Mission - Scenario Talk
Posted
Hi Guys
Yeah it is a biggie The action also is very immersive but mentally draining. I found I could only do a few turns at a time, as the mental effort needed to keep on top of all thr fighting was immense. Still it's dynamic street fighting so what do you expect...
It won't go away - so when you've all upgraded...
