  1. Peiper’s Race for Belgorod 18th March 1943

After being heavily involved in the fighting to recapture Kharkov in the winter of 1943, the Blowtorch Battalion races to take Belgorod before powerful Soviet reinforcements arrive from Stalingrad – and beat the Heer’s “Grossdeutschland” Panzergrenadier Division to being the first to the city…

    Map size: 6000m x 3000m

    Total points combined: 12000

Authors: George McEwan and Charlie Meconis

This is an advance Operation consisting of 2 battles, 45 turns each (note: if you emulate Peiper and make a dash it might only be one battle, if not, you get to meet the 2nd Guards Tank Corps).

    Play recommendations

Best played as Axis Vs AI with AI sticking to scenario default. If played as H2H more experienced player should play the Germans.

This is the last battle in the Blowtorch battalion series and you can get it, and the others in the series here

    Enjoy!

  3. Tankovyi Desant is a new scenario available here Blowtorch Scenarios

In December 1944, somewhere on the Eastern Front, a Soviet armoured advance guard encounters a German Aufklarungs unit screening its Division’s withdrawal.

Fictional scenario, but based on actions described in “Tank Rider” by Evgeni Bessonov and Vol 1 of “Sdkfz 250/1 Alt ‘GD’ Living History” by Richard Stone.

In this action both sides will be playing hide and seek. Works well as both H2H or versus AI. Note read the brief as there are some special considerations for this one.

This also comes complete with a command map allowing you to plot your victorious fight against the Bolshevik beast/Hitlerite Bandits!

Many thanks to Guido, Aragorn1963 and Rockinharry for playtesting and feedback.

    Enjoy!

    Cheers fur noo

Re I know what you mean. There is a strong pro-German slant, although the book is well written and has some good first person accounts of the fighting.

Overall though I've found from all the research I've done into the Eastern Front fighting that no matter who you read, with a few exceptions, tends to have a bias one way or the other. It appears to be the nature of the writing, and perhaps the conflict, that it generates such possible distaste. I guess it is up to the individual to read and make their own mind as to what slant the writer is taking.

I have found that first hand accounts of any fighting on the Eastern Front from the Soviet perspective are few and far between, at least in English. One Soviet account of the fighting, albeit latter in the war is "Tank Rider" (the name of the writer eludes me just now as all my books are packed away prior to a house flit)- well worth reading, a real gem I think.

Glantz's books make great use of Soviet sources, although his stuff does tend to be dry. If you like, read Nipe's book and cross reference what he writes, with the overall account given by Glantz in his account of the action in "From the Don to the Dnepr: Soviet Offensive Operations December '42-August '43"

Enjoy the book reading when it comes smile.gif

  7. I'd echo John's comments regrading Restayn's work. I have found the book very useful, from a CMBB perspective, to get the 'feel' of the landscapes around Kharkov correct.

As an aside if pennies are tight, "After the Battle" issue 112 has a superb account of the fighting in Kharkov itself.

Most of Kharkov survived the fighting intact so it was possible to compare photos taken during the fighting with their same location in the present day. It's a an excellent peice of work and only a few quid.

  8. Hi Sivodsi

    Check out:

Last Victory in Russia: the SS Panzerkorps and Manstein's Kharkov Counteroffensive by George M. Nipe Jr

This book is very readable and gives an accurate account of the Kharkov fighting in the winter of 1943 - lot's of CMBB stuff for scenarios in it - or check out the Peiper's Blowtorch scenarios which are based on incidents detailed in the book (with supporting stuff from others).

94 clams - pounds or dollars - yippee looks like I have a collection now worth something smile.gif

    Hi Hans

Many thanks for doing that - fingers crossed something comes of it. Any ideas why it's not popular to live? From the net there is a lack of info about the city compared to say Kiev or Kharkov? Nothing to do with dodgy guys in black leather jackets is it? Like the ones I saw in Moscow back in 1993!!

  10. Hi

Here is a small (!) selection of stuff I've found useful in preparing a series of scenarios Charlie Meconis and did for CMBB. It's by no means exhaustive - thei lost is slanted towards the LSSAH actions around the Kharkov winter fighting in 1943, with some of their actions during Kursk in 1943. I'm busy moving house and have just been shocked by how much my library has grown the past few years.

Hi Aragorn! How you doin? Cheers for the link. I'd found that one during research for this action my top favourite was the Sparsho - Preobrazhensky cathedral, as the map I'm using seems to have some churchy type building sitting on a hill. But then there also appears to be no other church buldings nearby. Given the photos I have, the map and the above info I'm wondering whether just to go with that in the short term, unless anyone who happens to have been over there can tell me differant. then again might just keep it nameless, but it does appear to have been a significant landmark. Thanks again for taking the time to post the info smile.gif

  12. Hi

Could anyone help please? I'm trying to find the name of the large church/cathedral on the southern outkirts of Belgorod. So far my search through the web has given some images of it but no name. Anyone know what the name is?

I'd be most grateful if you could let me know. It's for a scenario covering Peiper's race for Belgorod during the winter fighting of early 1943.

    Cheers fur noo

ps there is also a picture of it on page 345 in Nipe's book Last Victory in Russia.

If you are interested in playing a SPW heavy force try the Blowtorch Battalion series. These scenarios follow the combat actions of Peiper's SPW battalion through the fighting around and in Kharkov in the winter of 1943, to the Battle of Kursk, summer of 1943.

You can get em here http://www.blowtorchscenarios.com/Blowtorch/Blowtorch%20Series%20Main%20page.htm

I've already played most of them. Great job. Unfortunately only against the AI. But still great scenario's and wonderfully put together maps. </font>
