Need Help With Designing Unit Objectives

I'm a big fan of assigning 'destroy' unit objectives to blocks of units. Like 50 points for officers killed, 100 points for specialist teams, 250 points for infantry. so if you're killing the enemy you're earning points.

I also like that block assign method. Basically roughly counting single pixeltroopers and dependent on quality and composition an infantry company can be assigned between 100-150 points each. I tend to put heavy weapons, as well as vehicles (armored, non armored) in seperate groups and put them point wise in relation to the basic infantry formations. Do the same for opponent forces. Heavily depends on the mission goals what variations to choose for key unit groups, but that´s the base evalution and VP assignment method for me.

I tend to use map objectives rather rarely and prefer using them more for map trigger purposes. I also like "unknown to player" map objectives to award an end game surprise bonus for taking and holding what I figured key map locations, vital for mission achievment. Otherwise I prefer letting a player sort out himself figuring important map locations for the given general task. Exceptions possible. If the task is written up in briefing very clearly, one can get well along without that many details and the overall picture remains manageable. The player should also be not that much influenced by the designers prejudices this way.

Another end game reward for not taking too many losses is also something I like included. Though I´d prefer giving a short note in the briefing and not abstractive figures and using game terminology. "Take and hold objective, but disengage when enemy opposition too strong, or heavily counter attacked", or "Take and hold at all costs, until relieve" (that maybe never comes in the mission) should give the idea.

Wow all @Ted's questions answered and I am all out of up-votes.

My only addition would be a shout out to @Ithikial_AU's Victory Calculator. It is very helpful with creating balance in your victory conditions.

Yeah I tend to do this in most of my scenarios. I count the number of dismounts in a scenario and then give them 1 point each. So if 100 guys get killed, the player killing them gets 100 points. I then mix it up with parameters and other objectives and use @Ithikial_AU's VP calculator to get me in the right ballpark. Once I've done that, I test it a couple of times and tweak the numbers as required. To be honest for me, getting VPs right is the part of mission design is the most difficult thing to do; however it is still pretty simple conceptually so don't be put off by it.
