Panzerschreck Teams.

Thanks for the response. I think the issue may partially be exactly what constitutes "close range defense" -- since zooks especially are most effective at ranges of 100m or less, you're often trying to sneak them pretty close to enemy units, and this may trigger the #2's "close defense" routine.

But I think I respectfully disagree with you that "once the AT launcher is loaded the Loader is completely free to do whatever...". From what I've seen in training films at the like, the loader generally is pretty occupied with making sure he's out of the way of the backblast when the zook/shreck is about to fire. As such, I don't see him getting many (if any) shots off with his personal firearm during this time. Maybe once the rocket is downrange, but by then, depending on the effect of the first round, he may already be occupied with getting the next round ready....

+1

Also would like to know how "close range defense" exactly is defined and triggered. With current behavior, AT teams, HMG ect. is just another front line infantry type with heavier weapons.

So what is "close range defense"? Is it just a reaction to "potential" chance of beeing spotted by enemy infantry at ranges below 100m? Or is enemy infantry actually to spot AND fire at the special team, to trigger "close range defense"?

However, non gunners in AT and HMG teams should stick to their intended role (support and carry stuff), go prone and not act independently unless true emergencies arise.

One can start discussing, what an "emergency" could be, but there´s also the more realistic option to go prone or move away into cover, instead of taking up a senseless fight, that got the whole team killed at last.

Possibly. Which is why I agree it would be better if the #2 guy would limit himself to enemy infantry, at the very least.

Ah, but it all depends on what the gunner is doing. What you're talking about is when the gunner is actively engaging a target. Most of the time the #2 guy is sitting around doing absolutely nothing relating to the tube. Especially if waiting in ambush because there should already be one "up the pipe" and the #2 should be pulling security duty (of a sort).

When actively engaged, however, I do agree that the #2 should be completely preoccupied. But I don't know if we can get that sort of behavior easy enough to warrant including it. Remember, the vast amount of times the #2 guy is NOT engaging anything it shouldn't be. It's just that when he does we all complain about it because, well, because it's complaint worthy :D

I believe in real life, the loader guy being AT specialist (a role dangerous enough) would be completly happy to lay still and NOT fire on any tanks or infantry, rather trying to stay hidden and increase his team chances for succes and survical (he knows they must remain undetected to ambush a tank succesfully and just to stay alive).

He would happily leave things like suppressing tank commanders or fighting infantry for the regular infantry, and fire his rifle against infantry only if attacked and with no other options.
