Engineer Blasting

Recommended Posts

I had thought Engineer Blast commands didn't bother nearby friendlies, but I've just had two half-squads of Engineers Pin each other when they were both blasting towards the same place.

===Spoiler===

It's the wire before the bridge in School of Hard Knocks. I've scuttled a split Pioneer squad down there while it's still dark and the two teams are either side of the road each with a Blast move order that intersects the wire marker on their side of the 'V' and ends up on the same action spot, just past the point. Works quite nicely (except for knocking down some wall I would've liked intact) to get rid of the wire and allow infantry past, but aborts any further move orders (like to hide under the bridge :) )

I mean to do some tests but I think the reason they pin each other is that their charges blow mines in front of the bridge. When I did this it left a big crater and wounded one of the engineers. If that is the case, it is odd that the engineers don't figure there are mines there:

-"You're only supposed to blow the bloody barbed wire off!"

-"But I used the usual recipe"

-"Then why did it leave a bloody great crater in the middle of the road?"

It is mines for sure. It does not necessarily always set them off but if it does you usually hear an extra big bang.

When blasting likely mined areas it is good if you are already in craters or cover (slightly downhill) as this can prevent pinning/casualties.

SPOILERS:

I think the big bang ally side of the bridge that can occur is an AT mine going off. There are multiple AI plans for this scenario and it is possible the mine placement moves around.

I suspect you had an AT mine go so it is probably safe for all. It is a good idea to keep engies in the area and slowly move them around to help spot other mines.

Ach! Minen! Will the detonation of the mines in this fashion mean that the square is safe for followers-on?

===Spoilers===

Not necessarily. In my game, the last of four tanks to cross was immobilized by a mine despite the engineers previously blasting the tile, so at least one mine obviously remained.

Speaking of mines, I managed to lose about sixteen men in one turn the other day... it was devastating. I had three squads charging across a field with smoke cover, mortar barrage, and a whole platoon of supporting fire. Then the brave men started exploding in mid stride.

It's a toss-up whether an unwatched squad in real time or an uncontrolled squad in turn based mode will suffer more casualties in an emergency.

I had a half-section of Pioneers blow themselves up on that exact section of wire today. They were blowing it from the "wrong" side, and I watched the replay several times. One second there were three Pioneers hiding with their heads down, waiting for their charge to go off. The next second there was a massive blast, the wire was all gone, and there were three little red crosses where my Pioneers used to be :) Oh, and a huge crater.

I take it they detonated a mine...
