Two great Japanese war movies

Recommended Posts

If you haven't seen these (in Japanese, with English subtitles), you're missing out! "For Those We Love 1945" is a behind the scenes look at the lives and loves of young IJA pilots tasked to fly their Hayabusa fighters as kamikaze. The second, "Yamato," practically redefines the genre, covering a span of some 60 years, asking deep questions about all sorts of things, while unflinchingly looking at the real IJN and how it operated. Sets are incredible, but aircraft flight paths are hokey. Also, suffers from the History Channel syndrome in attack on Pearl Harbor (SBDs). There are several scenes which I'm sure left the Japanese viewers choked. Definitely made my brother, not the most emotionally demonstrative person, cry. Has actual footage of the wreck, too.
