Windows Vista 64 bit and Data Execution Protection (DEP)

Recommended Posts

Dear reader, this thread describes the installation of CMSF with Marines expansion on Windows Vista 64bit with DEP enabled and user account with limited privileges.

Software

Operating system

Microsoft Windows Vista 64 bit + SP2 + all updates applied.

Security settings

Data Execution Protection enabled, computer has hardware support for this feature.

Installation

Following de default installation of CMSF and Marines expansion, maybe a few patches all should work. Wel, one thing has to be done to enable CMSF to run.

Add these files to the DEP list:

Licensing server service

Path : C:\Windows\Runservice.exe

CMSF main program executable

Path : C:\Program Files (x86)\Battlefront\Combat Mission Shock Force\CM Shock Force.exe

These are de default installation path's of both files, and may vary with your installation.

Before CMSF can run, the Licensing server service must be running. Goto Control Panel -> System and Maintenance -> Administrative Tools and start Services (right mouse button click with Administrator privileges). Lookup LicCtrlService and start this service (highlight and press start button).

If all goes wel, the the service is now running in the background. If not, restart your computer and try again.

Now that the service is running, start CMSF (right mouse button click with Administrator privileges). Todo this do a right mouse button click on the Launch Combat Mission Shock Force icon on your desktop and choose run as administrator.

If you have no icon the do a right mouse button click on the Launch Combat Mission Shock Force via the windows startmenu (Start) or open a explorer and navigate to the installation directory. First time launch of Combat Mission Shock Force requires you to activate, so a activation pop-up screen is displayed. Complete activation and the game wil start.

Thats it, hope it works, enjoy.

If you have not installed and activated a Battlefront game using eLicense, then the LicCtrlService (Licensing service) will NOT be present. That software does not get installed until you license the game. When you submit the license key and it is verified, then that software is downloaded and installed.

So if you have not installed a Battlefront eLicense game on this computer/OS installation before, then you will not find the LicCtrlService until you license/activate one of our games.

Another thing to be wary of is that some anti-virus/firewall/anti-spyware/anti-malware/internet-security programs may interfere with the eLicense software. So it is possible that the LicCtrlService may be running, but some of these security programs may shut down your Battlefront game because they cannot decrypt the encryption used for eLicense and assume that it is some sort of trojan/virus.

This seems to be exactly my problem on my brand new WIN7 64bit machine. Installed CMSF (Paradox). Set exe running as admin - runs fast and well. Installed British and Marine Bundle.exe as Admin. Put in license key. Started CMSF - nothing! Had a look today at what Deltasix wrote. Found LicCtrlService under Services as running. Still, no joy.

Cool new computer, but CMSF does not work. What a pain in the ...

Now what? I have Zonealarm installed and am not sure if this is the culprit and has to be configured in some way. Have the same installation on my XP machine where I have no problems at all.

ZoneAlarm installs a utility that interferes with eLicense. You'll find it in the 'Programs and Features' control panel as 'ZoneAlarm Toolbar'. Uninstall this and CMSF will probably work.

We don't know why this particular utility prevents eLicense games from running. Even attempting to disable its functionality in the ZoneAlarm controls does not solve the issue. The utility itself has to be uninstalled. The ZoneAlarm firewall can remain installed, but this particular utility needs to be uninstalled.
