Mod Compatibility

Recommended Posts

Hi Folks,

I bought the original Combat Mission: Beyond Overlord when it first came

out. Prior to that, having read about its development, I anxiously anticipated

its release with an aura of expectation fully like that a young boy feels

at Christmas.

When CMBB came out, my single gripe (and it was a big one for me)

was that the "Tab-1" key, which gave one a first person perspective

had been changed. Minutely, but just enough to frustrate me a bit

as I surveyed the battlefield from that viewpoint. (Arguments ensued

in here over it, and though initially folks stated it had NOT been

changed, they eventually changed their collective tunes.) In any

event, CMBB didn't have the luster for me which CMBO had and I

soon stopped playing it altogether and stayed hunkered down with

CMBO alone.

I played it often for a couple of years and then got out of PC gaming

and now, having dusted off the cobwebs, have purchased the CMBB/CMAK

bundle.

It is apparent that for whatever reason(s) the old forum posts

are gone. A tragedy as their was so much to be gleaned and enjoyed

from them. (Those of you who read them "back in the day" will no

doubt nod your heads in agreement with this.)

Anyway, my question is with regards to compatibility for mods

for the various iterations of Combat Mission. I've seen some

that say "for use with CMAK", some with "for use with CMBB"

and others which say "for use with CMAK and CMBB". This

has me rather confused.

Are there any of the old modders left, or perhaps wargamers who

have used and/or experimented with the various graphic mods who

can state specifically the requirements/compatibility of the various

mods I've seen?

My thanks in advance, and good hunting.

Regards,

Oddball

Hi and welcome back

CMBO bmp artwork (IIRC 128) was of a resolution fitting for the graphics power many moons ago

CMBB/CMAK artwork (IIRC 256) was twice the resolution of CMBO, so any mods aren't interchangeable . Well they are but don't expect anything wonderful as the 3D models were rejigged so don't expect CMBO artwork to redrape correctly)

There is a series of mods/ mod pacs that can make the CMAK landscape more in line with northern Europe 1944+ (Normandy Bulge etc) as well as subtle and useful contour ground tiles.

Plus (shameless plug!) I did winterised modpacks for all allied vehicles and uploaded it to the now sadly demised CMMODs.com - though I should have it lurking on my hard-drive somewhere along with a few others, if they haven't been kindly transferred to Battlefront's own file Repository service.

Wicky: CMMODs.com is not sadly demised, is is joyfully revived, and much (if not all) of your great winterising work is on display there and available for the eager massess...

I think Oddball's question is specifically about CMBB/CMAK compatibility. The answer to this is that these two games do share some BMPs, so some mods will be able to be used in both, but this is by no means a general thing. So if a mod says "can be used in CMAK/CMBB" it's because the author of the mod has specifically checked if the same BMPs are in use in both games. If the mod just says "for use in CMAK" you can't tell if this means "I didn't check CMBB" or "I did check CMBB and it doesn't match".

Gentlemen,

My apologies for the delayed response. My PC has decided to boot-up

when it feels like it. Which is apparently sometimes on the fiftieth (no kidding)

attempt. I'll not get into the technical details, but I will say it can be rather

frustrating at times.

Anyway, while I try to wrestle my left foot from box's innards, allow me to

thank you both for your input on the issue of graphic mod capabilities

with regards to CMBB and CMAK. The issue is now clear in my tiny, little

head.

I'm off to back-up my BMP directory for CMAK and then will start with

installing about a half dozen "gridded" terrain mods. After that, I'll

begin tinkering with a bunch of others (vehicles) I've pulled down.

My thanks again, and good hunting!

Regards,

Oddball
