Well, if they had ToW to base their estimates on they would have been right! Silliest bit of advice I ever saw was in an early (but after the interrupter gear was introduced on German aircraft) WW1 magazine suggesting the safest place to be was immediately in front and slightly below the enemy. Oh dear.
