gravyface1
I'd like to take a crack at a mod but I've hit a wall pretty early on: can you rename a unit type? I'd like to replace the artillery with a "Waffen SS" unit, engineers with a "division" unit, and the carrier with a garrison/coastal unit. I can see how I can change the attack values in the edit but not the name. Secondly, how do you assign a unit type to a sprite? Is it just the order that the sprites are rendered in the bitmap? i.e. if I want a garrison unit instead of the carrier I have to edit the .bmp and replace the pic of the carrier with the garrison unit?
Moonslayer
To change unit names you need to look in the localisation file in the scenario directory. Scroll down it and you will come across the section you need to change. If you get stuck post again and I will try to help you more. To your second point; you are essentially correct... simply replace the sprite you don't want with the sprite you do... However, you cannot replace a sea unit with a land unit as the 'ocean going' property is hard coded and cannot be modified by the user (a shame, I know). For a garrison unit I would replace the corps sprite or engineer sprite depending on what your mod is. Good luck!
ChrisND
An alternative solution for more unit types would be to create a new Minor (or major) nation that essentialy belongs to the parent nation, but with modified unit values to represent different units, such as a corps that acts like a garrison.
gravyface1
Awesome advice! Thanks guys. I think the child nation would be a great idea for the Waffen SS as it was essentially autonomous from the Wehrmacht.
ChrisND
Also keep in mind though that a capital will have to be placed for the new nation, and that if it is a minor country it cannot be upgraded for the moment.
pzgndr
can you rename a unit type? I'd like to replace the artillery with a "Waffen SS" unit, engineers with a "division" unit, and the carrier with a garrison/coastal unit. Please note that there is a difference between simply renaming a unit type and trying to redefine a unit type. You can rename #CARRIER= to garrison or coastal or whatever in the localization.txt file and modify the bitmap graphics. But that carrier unit type - for all countries - will still perform like a carrier (ie, naval unit with air strike range, subject to air escort/interception, etc.) and still be subject to research areas applicable to carriers (ie, ASW, L/R aircraft and advanced aircraft). I don't think that's what you have in mind, trying to significantly redefine unit types (naval -> land) for some but not all countries. You can do a lot of customization with the Editor. But as Dirty Harry says, "A man's got to know his limitations."
Dallas Leopard
Hi, I was just looking through several mod sites, and I don't seem to find WWII 3D mods with the historical Flags. Any help would be appreciated. Just looking for unit and terrain sprites, no scenarios.
Moonslayer
@Dallas Leopard The flags don't necessarily come with the unit sprites. Minor countries use the flag_sprites file in the bitmaps folder. The major powers all have their flags already in place on the HQ units, however. Normal Dude is working on a replacement sprite package even as we speak. You can find the thread about that in the main SC2 forum. Terrain sprites are a different kettle of fish. As far as I am aware noone has produced a stand-alone terrain package yet... but many of the scenarios have their own custom terrain sprites which can easily be lifted from them and placed in your own mods. Try CMMODS for some ideas (link is in one of the sticky threads in this forum) Good luck!
Philippe
How exactly does one go about making wavy flags? There are several flags in the standard WWII group that I would like to tinker with, and to do it properly I need to make flags from scratch. I'm not happy with the shade of red in the German flag. I would also like to see the German military flag used with the units and the poltical flag used with the cities. The Finnish flag for cities should be the civil flag and not the military flag. The Hungarian flag is missing the coat of arms emblem in the middle. Several of the Middle Eastern flags don't look right to me, and should be checked at FOTW. To do all that properly, I'd like to know how to make wavy flags from scratch.
