Does the strike angle make any difference to the penetration of modern projectiles vs. modern armor?

Obviously if it's highly oblique it will but will I be looking for steep hills to put my Abrahms on etc?

It depends on the projectile, for a start. Some of the smaller calibre rounds are not dissimilar to WW2-style AP rounds, while the rule of thumb for APFSDS and HEAT -types is that the effect is purely geometrical, so the slope increases the amount of material it must defeat.

However, when dealing with very acute angles, odd things start happening. HEAT warheads often have a limit for the fuse to function correctly, so a glancing blow may fail to set it off. APFSDS rounds, on the other hand, sometimes have more effect against steeply sloped armour, defeating a longer straight-line path than it would do against 0 degree armour.

Its probably all a moot point against an Abrams front profile which has some ungodly equivalent of steel protection - 1,700mm or something similar? I believe a kornet warhead's only rated for 1,500mm. But range, strike angle, and warhead type will probably make a BIG difference whether a T72 turret front gets pierced or not. And a let's not forget the 105mm MGS. That gun's capability against a T72B is really marginal. Strike angles will probably make a real difference there.

Cool - good to see a bit of randomness thrown in. I wonder to what extent these things are being modelled.
