The 14th Army in Italy

Recommended Posts

VJ,

The Allies never had a 14th army in Italy. The two that fought there were the U.S. 5th and British 8th. Together they comprised the Allied 15th army group.

The Germans did have a 14th army in Italy, as well as the 10th. The two made up the German army group 'G'.

Perhaps your maps show allied advances going thru 14th army positions, as they did once the Anzio forces broke out of it's beachhead and began it's advance on Rome.

Could you run that by me one more time? My understanding is that the 5th. Army was on the west side of the peninsula and the 8th. to the east.

You're right Michael, US 5th Army (Brit 10th Corps + US 6th Corps) landed at Salerno, and pushed up the West side of Italy, Brit 8th Army (5th + 13th Corps), pushed across the straights of Messina accompanied by landings at Taranto, then pushed up the East side of 'the boot'.

These Armies together comprised the 15th Allied Army Group. They faced the German X Army (Vietinghoff), and later after the landings at Anzio the improvised XIV Army (Mackensen) also.

These comprised the German Army Group C. To complicate things, there was also a XIV Panzer Corps (Hube, then Senger Etterlin).

This probaby just complicates things right?
