JasonC
There was a large amount of fighting in the factories districts of Stalingrad. There was some such fighting elsewhere (Kharkov, Rostov, etc) but nothing close to the scale of the Stalingrad fighting. The battles in question lasted for about 2 months all told, with individual factories changing hands a dozen times. These are not single buildings, but whole complexes, up to a square mile in size. If you know what they are like, imagine an entire steel mill area, with numerous immense buildings, sheds everywhere, towers and machinery, etc. There was also fighting in smaller factories, to be sure. But the major factories areas were specifically used by the Russians as defensive fortified areas, which held out longer than other areas around them. This resulted in attacks on them from several sides, etc. I hope this helps.
