U.S. Aviator Pappy Boyington becomes the top U.S. ace when he shoots down three Japanese planes, giving him a total of 28 kills - two better than the previous record.

1/2/1942:

The Pentagon receives a depressing radio message from the Philippines that says, "Manila, Cavite lost; MacArthur fights on, holding Corregidor."

1/1/1941:

Japanese Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto asks his staff to prepare a feasibility study for an attack on Pearl Harbor. The study is apparently convincing.
