Recommended Posts

Anyone heading to the Ardennes in mid December? My wife gave me the green light and I'm booked into a small ski chalet outside Malmedy for 5 nights. The local historical societies and governments have some cool stuff planned, check it out here

Average temperature is about 37 degrees F. in December. should be alot of Fun!

(yea, she thinks I'm NUTS... ;)

I have been there last year near the end of October. I convinced my late girlfriend that the Vielsalm - St. Vith area was an excellent place for a long weekend. Really worth my time anyway. She just had to endure the little museums and broken down tanks along the roads.

Ahh, you just described two of my favorite vacations I have ever taken.

The first trip I stayed in Luxembourg city as a home base, and traveled the south bulge battlegrounds. I also drove the advance route of Kampfgruppe Peiper, from the German 'border' all the way to La Gleize. I also got caught up in a parade group with a police escort through Bastogne. They thought I was with an ROTC group and waved me through. I was parked with the official busses as a wreath was presented by the mayor of Bastogne at one of their monuments

Second trip I stayed in Clervaux. AWESOME town. You have to see it, I cant even explain how magical it felt. That was last year, and I did most of my traveling around the north edge of the bulge, St Vith. I walked around the hilltops of the Shnee Eifel where the 90th division was encircled.

There are some great books out there that are battlefield travel guides.

This year I just dont think I can talk my wife into Wallonia again, even though it is just about my favorite place in the world. This year is Paris, with a daytrip out to Saumur.

Bottom line- GO TO CLERVAUX, see the ww2 museum, the monestary and sit down for a nice kriek beer.

Ah yes Clerveaux, I went there as well. Inside the museum with the big Battle of the Bulge map on top of the hill, there was a German vet talking about how he was in the fights near Bastogne. I was a bit overwhelmed to be hearing real life account from someone from "the other side" cause I should have asked him which unit he was in and what not. Clerveaux was deffinately worth it.

P.S. not trying to sound like the local tourist office there.

yes, my brother Mark and I took a one day wirlwind tour of the battlefield in October 2000 (Echternach-Vianden-Dasburg bridge-Clervaux-Bastogne-Houffalize-Stoumont-Butgenbach-Rocherath) while the rest of our family toured Trier. One day was just not enough though. I plan to hike Rollbahn A from the Hollerath knee to Rocherath on one day, and up the railroad cut from Lanzarath to Bucholz station on another. Being by myself is the only way I can really do these crazy ventures that I always wanted to do, like a 5:30AM vigil on Dec. 16th with some veterens in their old front line foxholes...
