The 'binary' hint in that thread helped me overcome the problems with reading the greyscale elevation map! I found out myself that I could read the non-binary members in a string and convert them to the desired data type subsequently! If CM could export it's elevation data somehow it would be a piece of cake to render such shaded views, or even contour maps!
